Rugby Match: Argentina XV v Chile

08.11.2008
Argentina XV v Chile in Santiago (CONSUR A)

Preview
The composition of the Argentine side is very much a developmental one. The senior side is playing in Europe whilst the sevens side is also playing. Only a few players are selected from the 'A' squad which played for the Churchill Cup in June.

The Chileans also have a new look about them. Only a handful of players have any lengthy experience playing for Chile. A number are young and uncapped. Chile also has a new coach.

Rugby Test: Spain v Russia

08.11.2008
Spain v Russia in Moscow (ENC 1)

Previews
Spain warmed up for this game with a 27-20 win over Cambridge University last weekend. Russia, on the other hand, has probably cooled down somewhat since their last test match, a 28-29 loss to a strong French Amateur side in early September.

The Spanish team of last season developed into a useful combination, losing by only 2 points to eventual Cup winners Georgia in Georgia, and then ended the season with a 21-17 win over World Cup attendants Portugal. They were defeated 42-16 by Russia in Russia in April. They could well find the Russians just as formidible in early November.

The Russians have played more test matches than the Spanish since they last met in April. A young Russian side found the going tough at the IRB Nations Cup tournament held in Bucharest in June, losing all their games. Still, it meant a number of younger players were blooded into international rugby and I suspect the Russians will be more than ready for the Spaniards.

Rugby Test: Germany v Welsh Clubs XV

08.11.2008
Germany v Welsh Clubs XV in Berlin (Friendly)

Preview
This game acts as a warm-up for the German team despite a number of first-choice players not being available. This is usually the case for Germany's first game of the season.

The Welsh clubs side has been chosen from clubs in Divisions 1 to 4 and includes only amateur players. Welsh District teams have been popping across to Europe since 1972 when the first team visited Belgium. Since then these teams have played against Sweden and Denmark. In 2006 the German side visited Wales and defeated the Welsh Club XV 24-13 in Pontypridd.

Prediction: The German side is below strength and may well struggle against the visitors. Welsh Clubs by 6 points.

Rugby Match: Netherlands v Latvia

08.11.2008
Netherlands v Latvia in Jelgava (WCQ Euro. R3; ENC 2B)

Preview
The Netherlands began their crawl back into Division 2A with an 18-12 win over Croatia last weekend. This weekend they head into the Baltics where rugby is a growing sport. They could find the going tough!

The Latvians love their rugby. They have managed to get two of their star players back from Russian clubs to play in this vital match. The Latvians were defeated 5-21 by Sweden away at the end of October so a win at home is a must

These two teams have only met once before in a Rugby World Cup qualifying match.

Test Rugby: Lithuania v Andorra

08.11.2008
Lithuania v Andorra at Andorra La Vela (WCQ Eur. R4; ENC 3A)

Preview
At this level of international rugby there is not a lot of publicity. But if you know the right places..

Lithuania was undefeated over two rounds (2 seasons) in ENC 3B 2006-08 and were deservidly promoted to ENC 3A for the next two seasons. The experts tell me that Lithuania is a rugby nation going places as they have a very good junior rugby programme.

On the way down from ENC 2B last season were Andorra. A tiny nation squashed between Spain and France in the Pyrenees Mountains, Andorra has but one rugby club at present doing battle in the Catalan League in Northern Spain. Most of the national players come from this club.

So for this match the Andorran team heading down meets the team on the up. Last season there were two divisions between them but today they are playing at the same level.

The Lithuanians appear to have stuck with their experienced team from last year which, the experts tell me, contains two veterans from the last and only time these teams have met, back in 1996. One of them, last years captain Darius Nosys, is a young 38 years in his socks.

So now let these two teams lock horns and see what happens!

GWC Rugby Rankings: Europe Table-Andorra 23rd, Lithuania 27th.

Prediction: Lithuanians to go home with a narrow win by 2 points.

Test Rugby: Slovenia v Austria

08.11.2008
Slovenia v Austria in Vienna (WCQ Europe R5; ENC 3B)

Preview
The Slovenians have taken ENC 3B by storm. Newly promoted from ENC 3C the Slovenians have already defeated Hungary 32-26 and Denmark 25-19. Not bad going for the new team on the block. And next we have the Austrians who have struggled to both score tries and win games. The experts tell me the Austrians have not scored a try in 5 games. I suspect the trouser dropping incident in Latvia earlier in the year has something to do with it. Even without four of their leading players from last week the Slovenians look to be on a roll. At least they'll score more tries than the Austrians!

Test Rugby: New Zealand 19, Australia 14

New Zealand retained the Bledisloe Cup in the unlikely environment of a warm, humid, wet night in Hong Kong. The New Zealanders made more mistakes in this match than they did in all previous tests this year. Australia pounced on their opportunities to lead 14-6 at one stage before the Kiwis mounted their predicted comeback.

The All Blacks started slowly and had to play catch up rugby for much of the first half. In the second half they applied the pressure and eventually the Aussies cracked.

Comments from Graham Henry, All Black coach.
"The guys won ugly. They got better as the game went on. They played much better in the second-half than the first but it was a typical All Black-Wallaby Test match - hard as hell - and our guys showed enough guts to get through it and win."

Australia move on to Italy from Hong Kong where they play a test against Italy next Saturday. The New Zealanders move to Murrayfield where they play Scotland.

Test Rugby: Canada 21, Portugal 13

Canada won its first game on the November European tour 2008. Both teams were fielding a mixture of experienced players and newcomers to the test scene. Canada dominated up front for the first half but the Portuguese forwards came back strongly in the second. Portugal scored a runaway try early in the second half but it was Pritchard's runaway try later in the game that knocked the stuffing out of the Portuguese. The Canadian defense had had to work overtime up to that point.

Comments from Kieran Crowley, Canadian Coach.
"(Portugal) really took it to us in the second half - and we really didn't have that many opportunties," he offered. "I think our defense was great - and really kept Portugal out of the game, but we needed the ball more if we wanted to really open the match up - so Portugal did well in that respect.
I think we need to really focus on the positives - but we need to look at the video and make the adjustments and put in some hard work this week ahead of the Ireland match."

Comments from Tomaz Morais, Portuguese coach.
"They [Portugal] did so well, I am very happy, despite the loss, on how we did today. We have only ten players that went to the World Cup so lots of young players out there today. We are down 14-10 and five metres out - in control, and then boom - Canada takes it the other way - very hard for the players."

Canada faces Ireland next weekend whilst Portugal has to wait until February 2009 for their next test which will be an ENC 1 fixture.

Coments thanks to and full match report from... http://www.rugbycanada.ca/index.php?lang=en&page_id=10&news_id=4355

Rugby Result: Belgium 9, Ukraine 8

Wet conditions ensured that this would be a tight game of rugby. Ukraine just missed out on creating a minor upset as the Belgians were fancied to win this game. Win they did but only by a squeak. The Ukraine remain on top of the table in ENC 2A but this was only the second game played. The match was also part of the Rugby World Cup 2011 Europe Round 2 qualifying process.

Test Rugby: Netherlands 18, Croatia 12

More rainy weather in Europe and this time in Amsterdam. The Netherlands won their first game in their new division, ENC 2B, in European rugby. The match was also part of Rugby World Cup 2011 Europe Round 3 qualifying system. Are the Dutch on the comeback trail after nearly a decade in the doledrums?

Test Result: Malta 9, Sweden 6

This was an ENC Division 2B fixture as well as a Rugby World Cup 2011 Europe Round 3 qualifying game. Malta upset the form book by winning away on a rainy day in Stockholm. The controversy surrounding their Australia Rugby League player Jarrod Sammut, who was stood down for this game, may well have had an inspiring effect on his team mates. One account reports that it was a poor game of rugby. Slovenia remains undefeated in this division, just one point behind Hungary who has played an extra game.

Test Rugby: New Zealand v Australia

01.11.2008
New Zealand v Australia in Hong Kong (Bledisloe Cup)

Preview
Who would have thought a few years ago that a test match between New Zealand and Australia would be staged in Hong Kong? Well, precisely none! I personally think the match could have gone ahead without the official test match status and without the Bledisloe tag. The same number of people would show up if it was a New Zealand XV v an Australian XV. I just feel it has robbed some of the specialness that is the Bledisloe contest.

Having said that a test match it is. Australia will be rustier that the Kiwis whom many have had a tough provincial match under their belt whereas the Aussie have been in cotton wool since the Tri-Nations in September. Both teams have their share of injuries and unavailability. This will affect the Wallabies the most as the Kiwis have a greater depth.

International Rugby: Canada v Portugal

01.11.2008
Canada v Portugal in Lisbon
Venue-Estadio Universitário de Lisboa, campo Vasco Pinto de Magalhães, Lisbon

Preview
Canada arrived in Portugal to start their European tour without many of the 2007 Rugby World Cup team. Still playing but unavailable are Jamie Cudmore, Colin Yukes, David Spicer, DTH van der Merwe and Luke Tait. Missing from this first test, as it lies outside the November Window in which all clubs must release their international players, are overseas pros Mike Burak, Ed Fairhurst, Josh Jackson, Justin Mensah-Coker, Sean Michael Stephen and veteran prop Jon Thiel. As a result Canadian coach, former All Black Kieran Crowley, has selected a mainly home-based team with two new caps in the starting line up with a further six on the bench.

Portugal are also without a few of their regulars. Coach Tomaz Morais has introduced four new players into the squad to play Canada.

Test Match: Ukraine v Belgium

01.11.2008
Ukraine v Belgium in Brussels (WCQ Euro.R2, ENC 2A)

Previews
Belgium is one of the rising stars in European rugby. An active rugby union has promoted the Argentine rugby team to play in Brussels just prior to the 2007 Rugby World Cup and a star-studded British Barbarians team earlier this year. Hand-in-hand has been the gradual rise of the Belgian National team over the past few seasons. Just pipped last season by the Germans, who were promoted to Division 1, Belgium should be in the running to gain promotion mid-2010 after the two rounds in ENC 2A.

The Ukraine were relegated from Division 1 in 2006. They struggled in this division last season but were well clear of relegation. They lost out twice to Belgium over the two rounds. It remains to be seen if they will threaten the leaders at this level. Saturday should give us a clear indication.

Test Rugby: Netherlands v Croatia

01.11.2008
Netherlands v Croatia in Amsterdam (WCQ Euro.R3, ENC 2B)
Venue: National Rugby Centre

Preview
Croatia come into this match well prepared. A wake-up trip to Prague 18 October saw the Croatians lose to Czech Republic 0-47 in a test friendly. The Croatians were without a few of their stars but this is only one level above ENC 2B on the European rugby scene. Next it was down to Malta for the first competition game and a last minute win 18-16. A win away is a highly prized treasure in this competition.

The Dutch were in the top storey of European rugby from the mid-nineties through to the start of the European Nations Cup in 2001. Suddenly they found the going tough. They also quickly crashed out of the 2003 Rugby World Cup qualifying stages and found themselves in ENC 2A 2002-03. They held on for two competitions at that level but fell to relegation again at the end of last season. European rugby at the top level was leaving the Dutch behind. Now they find themselves in ENC 2B and hopefully the start to gain promotion again. The crunch comes on Saturday against Croatia exactly ten years since these two team last met. I wonder how much has changed?

International Rugby: Sweden v Malta

01.11.2008
Sweden v Malta in Vanesborg (WCQ Euro.R3, ENC 2B)

Previews
No word of any team lists from anywhere on the 'net which is most unusual. An issue has arisen over the availability last weekend of Maltese player Jarrod Sammut. A rugby league player from Australia he was in breach of his Australian RL contract whilst turning out for the Malta rugby union side against Croatia. One can imagine that such controversy and that Sammut will not be available may affect Maltese team spirit.

The Swedes made a big impression in their first game in ENC 2B following their promotion last season. They won 21-5 over Latvia at home. This week's game is also at home, a distinct advantage. Swedish rugby blog http://teamswedenrugby.blogspot.com/2008/10/sweden-malta.html indicates that there will be changes to the Swedish side to play Malta. Simon Taylor, for example, will not be available.

Bledisloe Cup

For the first time in the 74 year history of this famous symbol of rugby supremacy between Australia and New Zealand, the Bledisloe Cup will be fought for on 'foreign' soil. Australia and New Zealand will play each other in Hong Kong on the way to their respective tours of Europe. The match has been organised by the Hong Kong Rugby Union.

Is this going too far? What lies ahead for other venues for this sacred trophy? How many Australians and New Zealanders will actually watch this match live? Post your views here.

Rugby Test: Sweden v Latvia

25.10.2008
Sweden v Latvia in Vanesborg (WCQ Europe R 3; ENC 2B)

Preview
Venue: Gymnasieplanen, Vänersborg, Sweden
Kick-off: 14.00 local time
Referee: M.Michalik (Poland)

Neither team has played a competition game yet this season. This game, and the Croatia v Malta match are the first ones in the ENC 2B competition this season.

Sweden gained promotion from ENC 3A at the end of last season. This will be their first game at this new level. Sweden won its way into this level in 2000-01 but soon dropped away with poor form including the 2007 Rugby World Cup qualifiers of 2004-05. Entering ENC 3A in 2005-06 Sweden began to climb again eventually winning its way into the Second Division of Europe.

Latvia came second in this division behind Poland after the 2007-08 season. Latvia's form has been very much up and down over the last few seasons. After being promoted from ENC 3A in 2005-06 they have not been able to proceed losing twice heavily to eventual winners Poland.

18.10.2008
Czech Republic 47, Croatia 0 in Prague (Friendly)

Brazil 24, Trinidad and Tobago 12 in Sao Paulo (WCQ America 2, Playoff 2nd Leg)

A big win for the Czech Republic exposing the different standard in play between divisions in Europe. Easy wins for Armenia and Hungary, both on home soil and Trinidad and Tobago put up a good fight in Brazil. Brazil, however, goes into the next WCQ Americas round involving Chile and Uruguay.

Test Rugby: Trinidad and Tobago v Brazil

18.11.2008
Trinidad and Tobago v Brazil in Sao Paulo (WCQ America R2, Playoff 2nd Leg)

Preview
The Calypso Warriors, the name given to the rugby team from Trinidad and Tobago have a huge task ahead of them in Brazil on Saturday. Defeated 31-8 by the Brazilians in the first leg in Port of Spain last Saturday, the Trinidadians have to win by more than 23 points to progress to the next stage. A number of factors are against this happening.

Firstly, winning away in Brazil was always going to be the more difficult leg for the Caribbean team. Secondly, their flight to Brazil was disjointed, with half the team flying direct to Brazil, the other having to fly via Caracus in Venezuela arriving a day later. Passport problems were said to be the cause. Thirdly, the nature and size of Brazil's win will be a major psychological hurdle for the men from Trinidad to overcome.

On the bright side is the return to the Caribean side of 38 year old veteran flyhalf Brendan O'Farrell.

GWC Rugby Rankings: World Table-Brazil 29th, Trinidad and Tobago 30th.
Both these teams qualify for the World Table as they are in different zones in the rugby world. Brazil is affiliated to CONSUR whilst the Caribbean side is with NAWIRA.

Prediction: Rugby is a funny game at any level and upsets can always occur. It is difficult not to see an easy Brazilian win. Brazil by 40 points.

Rugby Test: Czech Republic v Croatia

18.10.2008

Czech Republic v Croatia in Prague (Friendly)

Preview

This rugby test match is an important warm up match for both these sides. The Czech Republic begins its campaign to be promoted back into the ENC 1 after relegation last season. Their first competition game in ENC 2A is against Poland in a months time. So this match is an important work out. This match also gives the Czech Republic an opportunity to end its record 16 consecutive losses since defeating Ukraine 46-8 back in November 2005.

Croatia plays one division below Czech Republic in ENC 2B. They finished middle of the pack in the 2006-08 competition.
The last time these two teams met was also a friendly encounter back in April 2002 in Brno when Croatia were overwhelmed 95-5!

Rugby Fixture: Monaco v Bosnia Herzegovina

11.10.2008
To be played at Stadium St Val d'Annaudin, Menton, near the tiny Principality of Monaco, situated in the sunny south of France. This match is not a 2011 World Cup qualifier.

Review
Monacan rugby has had a chequred history in the European arena. Twice, in 2002 and again in 2006, Monaco was excluded from European rugby competition due to playing inelligible players in their teams. Hopefully this is all behind them. Monaco lost to Cyprus 10-19 in Nicosia last October in the 3D tournament on that island.

Bosnia Herzegovina lost the ENC 3C-3D playoff to Israel recently and will be doing all they can to climb back into ENC 3C. On paper they look to be a class above the other teams at this level.

Previous Encounter

Rugby Fixture: Austria v Norway

11.10.2008
To be played in Oslo (World Cup Qualifier; ENC 3B)

Preview
Austria travels to Norway for its first rugby test for 2008-09. Austria only just managed to survive in ENC 3B for the next two seasons when they defeated Hungary 9-6 in a suprise result at the end of that season. That result saw Bulgaria relegated instead. So this season will see the need for Austria to rebuild the team and build from that victory over Hungary.

Norway dropped their first home game 15-26 to Hungary 2 weeks ago and the pressure is on them to win this vital home game. Winning away is difficult at this level of international rugby. These two teams drew 3-3 in Vienna in April whilst Norway won the Oslo fixture 22-8 in June of last year.

There is a lot hinging on the first leg of this America World Cup Qualifier. Trinidad and Tobago won the NAWIRA B tournament held in Cayman Islands in April, whilst Brazil defeated Paraguay in Asuncion to take the CONSUR B tournament. They clash to decide who will join Chile and Uruguay in the second round of America qualification test matches. Both countries went through a very similiar qualifying process in 2001-02 with Brazil just edging out the West Indians.

Review
Ukraine has traditionally been stronger than Poland. Poland is new to this division, earning promotion from ENC 2B. The Poles have been camped in France, have played a few local French club sides and their side contains some France-based players, most of whom are yet to play test rugby. The presence of France club players will make them stronger than the Ukrainians who look to only have home-based players. Poland also has home advantage.

Prediction: Poland by 3 points
