CHINA v INDONESIA: ARC Division 3, East

13.06.2015

Image

Venue: Jakarta Intercultural School, Jakarta

Referee:

China should easily account for the home side in the final match of this tournament. A win to China would see the promoted back to Division 2, a position they held until a few years ago.

Prediction: China by 40. Score 49-9.

ASIA NATIONS DIVISION 3, EAST Finals Day

31.05.2014
Guam v China in Vientiane (Asia Nations Div.3, East; Final)
Laos v Indonesia in Vientiane (Asia Nations Div.3, East; Playoff 3rd-4th)

Preview
China caused a minor upset by defeating Indonesia in the first semi-final held Thursday. For the last few seasons China appears to have concentrated on the Sevens rugby allowing their 15’s game to slip dramatically. Thursday’s game is an indication that that could change.

China’s clash with Guam will see Asia’s most populated nation take on one of its least. Guam showed just how strong they are with a convincing 48-0 win over hosts Laos. I’d expect Guam to be too strong for the Chinese side.

The last time Guam and China met was in 2011 with China winning 28-18 on the day. Last year Guam defeated Indonesia by over 50 points. Indonesia lost by 4 points to China Thursday.

This year Laos has had to step up in the standard of competition from other years and may well find Indonesia too strong.

Predictions
Guam by 24 v China
Indonesia by 12 points

ASIA NATIONS DIVISION 3 EAST

29.05.2014
Guam v Laos in Vientiane (Asia Nations Div.3, East; Semi-final 1)
Indonesia v China in Vientiane (Asia Nations Div.3, East; Semi-final 2)

Briefly
Asia Nations Division 3 has changed from last season. It has been divided into east and west zones.

China failed to win any of its Division 3 games last season. They lost 13-37 to Indonesia. China is focusing on sevens rugby. In 2010 they were relegated from Division 2 and since has not looked like gaining promotion. Since 2012 they have lost by some huge margins.

Indonesia has also struggled at the international level. They have managed to survive in Division 3 since being promoted out of regional tournaments in 2009.

Guam is the form team. They lost narrowly to Qatar last season and defeated Indonesia by over 50 points. I expect them to win this zone.

Laos played in Division 4 last year and even though they are hosts I can’t see them making an impact.

Predictions
Indonesia by 30 v China
Guam by 25 v Laos

Pakistan has the most international experience of all the teams.Their first experience of international rugby was at the 2004 19th Asia Championship, held in Sri Lanka. Pakistan was in Pool C. Sri Lanka was their first opponent on the world stage; they lost 3-75. They also lost to India 3-56. Since then the game has developed rapidly in Pakistan and a healthy and competitive club competition thrives. Last year they crashed out of Division 2 losing both to China and India.

55[1]

Guam first played test rugby in 2005 in a World Cup qualifying series against India, Kazakhstan and Malaysia. They drew their first test match 8-8 with India but lost with honour to the other more established rivals. Last year they defeated Indonesia 23-3 in Manilla but lost 0-25 to the Philippines who were promoted to Division 2.

137[1]

Indonesia entered the world of international test rugby in 2006. Up until last year they have been involved in regional tournaments involving Cambodia, Laos and Brunei, winning most of their games. Last year they lost heavily to both Guam and Iran in the Division 3 Asia Nations Competition. There being no Division 4 Indonesia stayed put. The pressure will be on to improve against the same teams as last year, and hold their place.

iran-RUGBY-LOGO[1]

Iran is the newest team on the world scene in this group. Their progress has been nothing short of amazing. They defeated Pakistan twice and India once in their first year! They took part in a regional tournament in 2008, defeating both Kygyzstan and Uzbekistan. Last year they entered the Asia Nations competitions for the first time playing in Division 3 in Manilla. They lost their first test match ever, going down 0-15 to eventual winner Philippines. They then defeated Indonesia 48-13 to showcase what Iran has to offer international rugby.

Weekend Results 4-5 July

04.07.2009
British and Irish Lions 28, South Africa 9 in Johannesburg (3rd Test)
United States 12, Canada 6 in Charleston (WCQ America R2, 1st Leg)
Philippines 25, Guam in Manilla (Asia Nations Div.4, Final)
Iran 48, Indonesia 13 in Manilla (Asia Nations Div.4, Playoff 3rd-4th)

05.07.2009
Papua New Guinea 29, Cook Islands 21 in Port Moresby

Reviews
Finally and at last the British and Irish lions let loose and won comfortably against a South African side that struggled the whole match. The Springbox 'Second Fifteen', as they were labelled, were not allowed to play their usual game and found a fired-up Lions side determined to take something from this tour. There will be questions about the wisedom of the South African selectors decisions to rest players and to the depth of the South African squad that will face Australia and New Zealand in a few weeks time.

The USA gained the best birthday present ever. A win against canada on the 4th of July! Although no tries were scored it was a entertaining close, physical match. The USA now head for Edmonton, Canada next weekend where they will hope to win and place themselves directly into the 2011 Rugby World Cup.

The Philippines won promotion to Asia Nations Division 2 with a convincing 25-0 win against Guam. Iran won 48-13 against Indonesia thus relegating the Indonesians to Division for 2010.

And last but not least Papua New Guinea won the Oceania Zone World Cup qualifier against the Cook Islands. They now head to Apia next weekend for a playoff against Samoa in the first leg of the Oceania R2 final.

Playoff 3rd-4th
Indonesia v Iran in Manilla

This will be an interesting clash between the world's biggest Muslim nations. Their rugby community is as yet still very small but growing. Iran were undefeated in their short international rugby history until mid-week when they lost 0-15 to hosts Philippines. Indonesia lost 3-23 to Guam also mid-week and I would expect the Iranians to win, sending Indonesia to the 2010 Asia Nations Division 4.
