BELGIUM 41, NETHERLANDS 20: REC 1B

26.09.2015

Briefly
Belgium, even without some of their France-based players, were too strong for Sweden away in Stockholm. The result would seem to put an end to Sweden’s ambitions of staying in REC 1B for 2016-18 following their promotion in 2014.

RUGBY EUROPE CHAMPIONSHIP: Division 1A and 1B

28.02.2015
Georgia 26, Spain 13 in Madrid (REC 1A)
Russia 16, Romania 13 in Russia (REC 1A)
Portugal 8, Germany 3 in Lisbon (REC 1A)
Netherlands 18, Moldova 10 in Amsterdam (REC 1B)

Review
Russia caused the upset of the day with a 16-13 win in Krasnodar. Romania were on the back foot from the start when coach Lyn Howells, all the management staff and one player failed to get visa clearances.

Georgia managed to overcome a greatly improved Spain in Madrid whilst Portugal struggled all the way against another big improver Germany.

Moldova again showed their weakness when playing away from home. Without top players they showed a lack of depth and went down to Netherlands. Until Moldova can solve these problems they will really struggle if they get promoted to Division 1A

NETHERLANDS 2 0 0 2 29 32 -3 2 2
SWEDEN 3 0 0 3 25 131 -106 0 0

Although at opposite ends of the points table these two teams could well be closer than that. Moldova has the perfect record so far and look likely contenders for promotion in 2016.

The Netherlands, newly promoted, have began with two impressive displays, losing by one point to Poland and by two points to Belgium. Not bad for a team playing in Division two last season.

Moldova travels away with what appears to be a constant problem. They just can’t field a strong team on the road. ‘So, no M Cobilas, no V Cobilas, no Arhip, no Mahu, no Felston, no Cavcaliuc, no Golubenco.’. These players have all been listed by their professional clubs as playing this weekend. So much for the international window. The last time Moldova played Netherlands in Amstredam the same thing happened and look at the score.

Moldova’s only bright spot is their powerful scrum, even with out the Cobilas brothers. If the Netherlands can hold them in the scrum they are in with a chance of winning.

A much closer result than most expected. Netherlands were awarded three yellow cards during the match, the last on full time from which Belgium scored the winning points.

Traditional and long standing rivals, Netherlands and Belgium first played each other in 1932 soon after the formation of FIRA. For the next thirty years they were regular and almost exclusive opponents when rugby in Europe began to expand.

At present they meet because Belgium were relegated from Division 1A last season whereas the Netherlands were promoted from Division 2A. So after two seasons from competitive international rugby these two teams meet again at the same level of competition.

Belgium has already established itself as one of the favourites with a convincing win over Ukraine in November. They will not be at full strength as three top players, Julien Berger, Guillaume Piron, Dirk Haghedooren and Mathieu Verschelden, have not been released by their French clubs.

The Netherlands has named a changed lineup from that which performed well against Poland in October. That performance was very encouraging. Being host the Netherlands will be eager to defeat their traditional rival.
