Test Rugby: New Zealand and Australia Play for Bledisloe Cup

31.10.2009
New Zealand v Australia in Tokyo (Bledisloe Cup)

Venue: Olympic Stadium

Referee: Mark Lawrence (South Africa)

Preview
It's Bledisloe Cup time again. Again!! As I did last year, I cannot quite get my emotions around such a clash being played away from the tradition venues, either 'here' or 'there'. But this is a modern game and this match showcases Japan's recent appointment to run the 2019 Rugby World Cup.

New Zealand's starting team is very much the same that thrashed Australia 33-6 in Wellington. New Zealand has made one change to the original selection. Newcomer Zac Guildford replaces rookie Tamati Ellison on the bench.

Australia is embarking on a Grand Slam tour of Europe (meaning they play all four Home unions-England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales). Their form this season has been consistently off. This tour could either be a nightmare of the making of the team. Australia lost veteran Stirling Mortlock to injury and has lost Berrick Barnes to injury during a training run after selection. It's going to be tough for the Aussies

Rugby Test Match: Moldova and Belgium Clash

31.10.2009
Moldova v Belgium in Brussels (WCQ Europe R4; ENC 2A)

Venue: Stade Roi Baudouin-A2

Referee: Mourihna (Portugal)

Preview
Belgium and Moldova clash in Brussels. For both teams the chance to play for a place in the 2011 Rugby World Cup is virtually over. Both teams are in danger of relegation to ENC 2B so the outcome is important for that reason.

Belgium's slump in form is difficult to fathom. They have gone from Division favourites at the start of 2008 to being in some danger of relegation. Their last outing was a narrow loss to division favourites Ukraine 11-13 away, earlier this month. The result suggest there is little difference between the teams in ENC 2A. Key player Alan Williams is available following his dispute with the team management.

Moldova won 20-8 at home during the first round. Their forward pack will almost certainly be foreign-based players, the bulk coming fresh from the Russian Super League or the Romanian League. Players are also based in Portugal and one from Spain. They could well be a handful for the Belgian side.

Test Match Rugby: Malta to Play Croatia in Split

31.10.2009
Malta v Croatia in Split (ENC 2B)

Venue: Nada Split RFC Ground, Stari Plac

Referee: Breburda (Czech Republic)

Preview
This is the first of the ENC 2B matches this weekend. Following these matches the situation on the points table will be clearer; who will be promoted, who will be relegated.

Croatia were successful against latvia last weekend, winning comfortably 23-9. Malta has its first outing since last northern autumn. Croatia's win last weekend took it to the top of ENC 2B but needs to win again here, at home, as second placed Netherlands has a game in hand.

Malta is placed in the middle of the table. A loss could see them slide towards relegation.

Rugby Test: Netherlands Travel to Sweden

31.10.2009
Sweden v Netherlands in Trelleborg (ENC 2B)

Venue: Pingvin RFC Ground

Referee: Narmainidze (Georgia)

Preview
The Netherlands are undefeated in this division (their only recent loss was a shock 3-6 to Lithuania and a World Cup exit). The Netherlands won their first round game against Sweden by 12 points and they should prevail away. There are three new caps in the Netherlands team.

Sweden has won only once against the Netherlands, back in 1971. Coach Mike Tatu has had to make two changes to the original lineup; Bengtsson in for Matthew Youngman, and Wetterström in for Olof Wadell, in the reserves. The mix of new talent and players from foreign leagues provide hope for new era! "We believe we have taken out a strong squad with several young, talented players, and players with experience in tough leagues abroad ", said Tatu.

More Test Rugby This Weekend

31.10.2009
Sweden v Netherlands in Trelleborg (ENC 2B)
Denmark v Hungary in Odense (ENC 3B)

01.11.2009
Uruguay v Argentina 'A' in Cordoba

Briefly
Part of of this rugby weekend sees a continuation of the European Nations Cup and two South American nations warm up for their November ventures.

The Netherlands are undefeated in their division (their only recent loss was a shock 3-6 to Lithuania and a World Cup exit). The Netherlands won their first round game against Sweden by 12 points and they should prevail away.

Hungary regained the advantage in their division when they defeated Slovenia earlier in the month. Denmark lost to Norway by 7 points away on the same day and could well struggle against the visiting Hungarians.

Uruguay will play a home-away series against the USA in November, the claiming the second America's spot at the 2011 Rugby World Cup. They begin that campaign against Argentina 'A' (or the Jaguars if you prefer) in Cordoba Sunday. Argentina 'A' tour Europe during the November window along with the full Argentine side, the Pumas.

The full November window begins on November 7. How I will be able to keep up with it all I just do not know. Keep watching this space to see how well I do!

Test Rugby This Weekend

31.10.2009
New Zealand v Australia in Tokyo (Bledisloe Cup)
Belgium v Moldova in Brussels (WCQ Europe R4; ENC 2A)
Croatia v Malta in Split (ENC 2B)-More to come

Briefly
International rugby takes a new leap into the future. New Zealand and Australia clash away from Oceania for the second year in a row. This year they meet in Tokyo on the way to their northern tours. Is this the way rugby is heading with major teams clashing in exotic and developing rugby nations. Tokyo has been awarded the 2019 Rugby World Cup and this clash is grand way to celebrate the holding of the Rugby World Cup finals outside the top nations.

New Zealand and Australia have made changes to their lineups since their last clash in Wellington.

Belgium and Moldova clash in Brussels. Both teams look well out of contention for a top spot in this division. Both teams are in danger of relegation to ENC 2B so the outcome is important for that reason.

Croatia were successful against latvia last weekend, whilst Malta has its first outing since last northern autumn. Croatia's win last weekend took it to the top of ENC 2B but needs to win again here at home as second placed Netherlands has a game in hand. Malta is placed in middle table.

More to come.

Test Rugby Results This Weekend

25.10.2009
Czech Republic 19, Poland 5 in Varsovie (WCQ Europe R4; ENC 2A)

24.10.2009
Croatia 23, Latvia 9 in Riga (ENC 2B)
Serbia 13, Switzerland 8 in Belgrade (ENC 3A)
Bulgaria 25, Luxembourg 12 in Pernik (ENC 3C)

Reviews
All the results on Saturday went to prediction. Sunday's result was a huge upset win for the Czech Republic.

Poland's gradual drift towards recruiting players from France with Polish heritage does not seem to be working. Their loss has virtually eliminated them from World Cup contention and has placed the Czechs with a mathematical chance of qualifying. It has also placed the Ukraine in the hot favourites seat to take ENC 2A and an opportunity to play Lithuania for a chance to progress towards the World Cup finals, 2011.

On Saturday Croatia won easily over hosts Latvia, whilst Serbia and Bulgaria won their games at home.

Test Rugby

24.10.2009
Poland v Czech Republic in Varsovie (WCQ Europe R4; ENC 2A)

foto_1883_17786_67822222[1]

Venue: Stadion Osir Polonia

Referee: Petrescu (Romania)

Preview
The result of this game is crucial for both teams. Both have two loses although the Czech Republic has a game in hand. The winner would be the only team to seriously challenge the Ukraine in this competition. The Ukraine would have to drop one of their remainder games for either of these teams to catch up.

The winner of this Division gains promotion to the top level of the European Nations Cup for 2010-2012. The winner will also play, in 2010, the winner of World Cup Qualifying, Europe, Round 3. That winner goes on to playoff against ENC 1 3rd place for the final finals place at the 2011 Rugby World Cup.

Poland defeated Czech Republic 13-7 away in the first round match. The Poles are turning more and more to France-based players, following the trend of Georgia and Romania.

The Czech team played a warm up game against the French Army side last month (06.09.2009) and won 20-10.

International Rugby: Croatia v Latvia

24.10.2009
Latvia v Croatia in Riga (ENC 2B)

Venue: Stadionā Daugavas

Referee: Zeszustek (Poland)

Preview
Latvia is struggling to avoid relegation to ENC 3A. They lost 13-21 away to Croatia in April and has lost all their games in this division so far. Unavailable are Latvia’s semi-professionals, Uldis Saulīte & Jurijs Baranovs, who both play for the Russian club Enisei STM. This club has a match this weekend in the Russian professional league.

Croatia are one place behind Division leaders, the Netherlands, and they should defeat Latvia even though this is an away game for them.

Rugby Test Match: Serbia v Switzerland

24.10.2009
Serbia v Switzerland in Belgrade (ENC 3A)

Venue: Ada Ciganlija

Referee: Tuma (Czech Republic)

Preview
The outcome of this match has little bearing on the outcome of this Division. Lithuania looks a certain winner since Armenia forfeited their game, due 31 October, against the leaders. The main concern for these two teams is to avoid relegation.

Serbia has the psychological advantage of already defeating Switzerland away in the first round.

Rugby Match: Bulgaria v Luxembourg

24.10.2009
Bulgaria v Luxembourg in Pernik (ENC 3C)

Venue: Stadium Dimova Mihala

Referee: Pikhovkin (Russia)

Preview
Of these two teams Bulgaria looks more likely to topple group 3C leaders Israel and Greece. Bulgaria has performed strongly against bottom team Finland in their last two outings and looks the likely winner at home against their northern rivals.

Luxembourg arrived in Sofia without a few leading players. Injuries to Jonathan Harris, Joe Lister, Adrian Timmermans, William Bond and Loic Herve mean five new players, Christopher Ellis, Michael Minehan, Bryan Fage, Alan Dunn and Philip Vimond receive their first national call up.

Unfortunately there is no media outlet for the Bulgarian national side. All that can be gleaned is that 10 of their squad come from the leading club side, Valiacite Pernik.

Test Rugby This Weekend

24.10.2009
Poland v Czech Republic in Varsovie (WCQ Europe R4; ENC 2A)
Latvia v Croatia in Riga (WCQ Europe R3; ENC 2B)
Serbia v Switzerland in Belgrade (ENC 3A)
Bulgaria v Luxembourg in Pernik (ENC 3C)

Briefly
The Poland v Czech Republic outcome is crucial for both teams. Poland defeated Czech Republic 13-7 in the first round match.

Latvia is struggling to avoid relegation to ENC 3A. They lost 13-21 to Croatia away in April and has lost all their games so far. Croatia are one place behind Division leaders, the Netherlands, and should defeat Latvia even though this is an away game for them.

The outcome of this match has little bearing on the outcome of this Division. Lithuania looks a certainty since Armenia forfeited their game, due 31 October, against the leaders. Serbia has the psychological advantage of already defeating Switzerland away in the first round.

Neither Bulgaria nor Luxembourg look likely to topple group 3C leaders Israel and Greece. Bulgaria has performed strongly against bottom team Finland in their last two outings and looks the likely winner at home against their northern rivals.

Weekend Test Rugby Results

17.10.2009
Austria 15, Slovenia 13 in Ljubliana (ENC 3B)
Norway 15, Denmark 8 in Oslo (ENC 3B)

Briefly
Austria caused a major upset when they defeated Division winner contenders Slovenia 15-13 away. The result has all but ended Slovenia's dream rise in European rugby. Norway also surprisingly defeated Denmark at home to again throw both promotion and relegation open.

Test Match Rugby: This Weekend

17.10.2009
Slovenia v Austria in Ljubliana (ENC 3B)
Norway v Denmark in Oslo (ENC3B)

Briefly
Both test matches this weekend are in the same division for the European Nations Cup. Slovenia suffered their first defeat last weekend since being promoted from ENC 3C. They lost 11-17 to Hungary. Slovenia must win all its remaining games to stay with Hungary. Of the other three teams, Austria sits at the bottom of the table and faces a daunting task against Slovenia away. Denmark and Norway will contest the middle area of the Division in what has been termed, 'The Battle of the Vikings'.

International Rugby: Weekend's Results

10.10.2009
Ukraine 13, Belgium 11 in Kiev (WCQ Europe R4; ENC 2A)
Lithuania 40, Andorra 12 in Šiauliai (ENC 3A)
Hungary 17, Slovenia 11 in Pecs (ENC 3B)
Bosnia Herzegovina v Monaco in Zenica
(Match abandonned due to brawl. BH were leading 23-8 at the time)

Reviews
The Ukraine's win puts them well into the lead in European Nations 2A, some 5 points ahead of Poland. Poland has a game in hand but lost to Ukraine 12-19 last month. The Ukraine's position looks secure as really only the Czech Republic can threaten. The Ukraine would need to drop a game (they still have to play the Czech Republic and Moldova) to have their lead cut. The close result continues this trend between the two sides.

Belgium led 8-6 at halftime. The Ukraine put the pressure on in the second half with most of the play in the 'Black Devils'' half. The Ukraine had most of the possession, especially in the last 10 minutes, but handling errors by them and good defence by the Belgians keep the visitors in the game. A converted try in injury time by Ukraine, won them the game.

Lithuania scored their 15th win in a row by easily accounting for Andorra. Andorra were missing a number of regulars ("Injuries to Marc Abelló, Tchelidze and the Taurinyà brothers"), with up to 6 players possibly making their test debuts. Lithuania were never going to lose this game but under the circumstances Andorra did well to hold the score down, especially after being down 23-0 at halftime. It would appear Lithuania took the foot off the pedal! Thanks to 'Quentin' at http://www.fira-aer-rugby.com/forum2007/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=3221&start=0

The win places Lithuania firmly at the top of ENC 3A. Andorra are just as firmly at the bottom of the table, given that Armenia, Serbia and Switzerland all have a game in hand. That end of the table looks very even although only Switzerland looks like the other contender for relegation. At this stage it doesn't look for the men from the Pyrenees.

Hungary turned the tables against the visiting Slovenians by winning 17-11 in Pecs. The win places Hungary at the top of ENC 3B table on points difference, and ended Slovenia's remarkable winning run in their new division. The outcome will now depend on how these two teams fare against their rivals for the remainder of the competition, and upon the results of other games. "This makes it 43-43 [on aggregate] after the two matches between Hungary and Slovenia. If they tie, which is quite possible now, then Hungary will top the division on tries scored in the matches between the two sides: 7-5." Thanks to 'Natal' at http://www.fira-aer-rugby.com/forum2007/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=3220

I finish on a worrying note. The match between Bosnia Herzegovina and the visiting Monegasquian team ended due to an on-field brawl. "Bosnia was leading 23-8, and game was abonded due mass pitch fight of ALL players. Monaco had only 16 players. Informed also, that during [the] game, prior [to the] fight, Monaco player had leg broken into 2 places in a just ordinary tackle. Wish him well and speedy recovery". from 'rugbylife' (located in Bosnia Herzegovina) at http://www.fira-aer-rugby.com/forum2007/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=3223. The situation is not clear to me as to what happensto the points table in this case. I will keep you informed.

International Rugby: Ukraine Hosts Belgium

10.10.2009
Belgium v Ukraine in Kiev (WCQ Europe R4; ENC 2A)

Venue: Spartak Stadium

Referee: Laurent Valin (France)

Preview
Belgium, known as 'The Black Devils', is a team plagued by a list of injured players as it looks to its first competition match, in Kiev. Peter Plasman, Mathieu Verschelden, Dennis Eppe, Cyril Nana, Marote Simon and Carlos Fierro(who would have played his first test) are all unavailable. Nicolas Meeus is the only new cap. Belgium has won the last three encounters with the Ukraine. Demolder has been included in the starting lineup despite a shoulder injury.

The Ukraine is experiencing a surge of form. They have the advantage of a competition match already, a good 19-12 win at home against Poland. They have also lost the last three tests to Belgium and are looking to turn this around. A win here will place the Ukraine firmly at the top of the table and in line for a place in the next World Cup qualifying rounds. They are also experiencing injuries, notably to Jaba Malaguradze, but also Sergei Tserkovinyi, Alexander Lyuby, George Gegidze and Paul Masjukov. Unfortunately Ukraine has not published a squad list.

Lithuania has been riding a grand high since qualifying for the next round of World Cup qualifiers. A sensation 6-3 win over a higher-ranked Netherlands in May saw the Lithuanians celebrate on the streets of Riga well into the night. Well, if they didn't then they should have.

Lithuania's main problem in this match is going to be motivation.

Andorra arrives in Lithuania with only a squad of twenty, which has been their norm when they travel.

Venue: Várkői Stadium

Referee: Iordachaescu (Romania)

Preview:
It's very disappointing that the governing bodies of the sport in these two countries cannot publish team list before such an important game.

Slovenia remains undefeated at the top of this competition. They caused a major upset in their first game, a 32-26 win over favourites Hungary. Slovenia had only just gained promotion from ENC 3C. Slovenia qualified to play Israel in a World Cup qualifying match but lost. A win here will see them retain the lead and look set for another promotion.

Test Rugby. Finland Host Bulgaria

03.10.2009
Bulgaria v Finland in Helsinki (ENC 3C)

Venue: Myllypuro

Referee:

Preview
Both Bulgaria and Finland dropped out of World Cup 2011 contention after Israel headed the European Nations Cup 3C table at the half way stage. Bulgaria easily accounted for the Fins at home, 29-10, when they meet in the first round.

Finland has struggled in this division. They lost their home games narrowly and were not competitive in their away games, losing their last game, against Israel away, by 8-70. Israel went on to defeat Slovenia but then fall to Lithuania in their World Cup playoff matches.

Bulgaria's form has been up and down. They are situated in the middle of the division, losing to Israel narrowly at home, and then winning well against Luxembourg away. This was followed by a humiliating 18-40 loss to newcomers Greece away but just over the border, to then register a good win against Finland at home.

Finland will not be easy to defeat on their home ground. Bulgaria has proven it can win away from home and should be able to win this away match in Helsinki. On form they would be favourites to win.

Previous Encounters

18.09.2004 Bulgaria 42-3 in Helsinki (WCQ Europe R1)
06.06.2003 Bulgaria 42-3 in Ibisa, Spain (ENC 3C, Pool C, semi-final)

Bulgaria has an historical advantage over the northerners but Finland has bridged the gap significantly in their last encounter.
