KENYA ‘A’ v UGANDA: Elgon Cup

13.06.2015

Venue: Rugby Football Union of East Africa (RFUEA) Grounds, Nairobi

Referee: Tinashe Kamwenje (Zimbabwe)

Preview
There was a time when the Kenya first XV played against Uganda for this cup but the growth of rugby in Kenya is reflected by the fact that for the last two years Kenya ‘A’ has been the fielded side.

Last Year
Uganda 21-14
Kenya ‘A’ 34-0
Kenya ‘A’ held on to the cup for 2014.

Prediction: Kenya ‘A’ by 20 points. Score 33-13

KENYA v UGANDA; Elgon Cup 2013 2nd Leg 22.06.2013

Briefly
Uganda scored a vital 17-16 away win against Kenya on home soil last weekend. These two teams struggle to win the away leg in this competition. Uganda must be favoured to win this leg and recapture the cup.

Prediction: Uganda by 10 points

RUGBY TEST MATCH RESULTS: Saturday 28 April

28.04.2012
Japan 87, Kazakhstan 0 in Almaty (Asia5Nations)
Kenya 12, Uganda 0 in Nairobi (Elgon Cup 2nd leg; Victoria Cup)
Lithuania 48, Latvia 8 in Riga (ENC 2A)
Croatia 31, Malta 16 in Zagreb (ENC 2A)
Serbia v Armenia-Forfeit to Serbia
Cyprus 94, Bulgaria 3 in Pernik (ENC 2D)

Briefly
Japan again displayed the huge gap between its rugby development and the rest of Asia. Only Hong Kong look as if they are going to get within reach of the Cherry Blossoms.

Although Kenya won 12-0 in Nairobi Uganda takes the Elgon Cup due to a 17-12 overall points aggregate.

In ENC Division 2A Lithuania were too good for neighbours Latvia whilst Croatia caused a major upset defeating Malta 31-16 at home. This result leaves both Lithuania and Sweden on 24 points with the last games next weekend crucial.

P W D L PF PA DIFF BT BL PT
SWEDEN 7 5 1 1 204 147 57 2 0 24
LITHUANIA 7 4 1 2 205 99 106 3 3 24
MALTA 8 4 0 4 146 135 11 2 2 20
CROATIA 7 3 0 4 136 142 -6 1 2 15
LATVIA 7 1 0 6 93 261 -168 2 1 7

The fact that Sweden and Lithuania drew 30-30 earlier in the competition means they are dead even. Croatia needs to win against Sweden with a bonus point to send Malta to the relegation series.

Cyprus continued its winning ways. What has happed to Bulgarian rugby. They have a new coach but what a horror start for him!

Preview
Kenya were shocked to find Uganda too good for them in their first rugby test match of the season. After winning the Africa last season and performing well at the Cup of Nations tournament in December Kenya were expected to brush their African neighbours aside.

Uganda has not won the Elgon Cup since 2006. They now have a 14 point advantage going into this second leg of the Elgon Cup. The team with the highest aggregate after two matches will be the holder of the Elgon Cup.

The Ugandans will find the Kenyans a much tougher prospect from last week. Kenya has a big task ahead to win by more than fourteen points.

I expect Uganda to pull off another upset by defeating Kenya away.

Malta inflicted Sweden’s first loss of the season and making the equation as to who will progress to ENC 1B.

Denmark defeated Austria at home as did Luxembourg over Finland. Looks like Finland are destined for relegation.

In the Asia Division 1 World Cup qualifying tournament, The Philippines defeated Sri Lanka to gain promotion to Asia5Nations for 2013 and a shot at the big time in Asia rugby. Singapore were relegated to Division 2 for 2013 thus ending their World Cup qualifying hopes.

Cayman Islands defeated Mexico by a wide margin and thus gain entry into the NACRA Caribbean World Cup qualifying second round. I was surprised by the margin of loss by Mexico. Their World Cup dreams are over.

AFRICAN TEST RUGBY: Elgon Cup, Victoria Cup

21.04.2012
Kenya v Uganda in Kampala (Elgon Cup, Victoria Cup)

Venue: Kyadondo Rugby Club

Referee:Jaco Peyper (South Africa)

Preview
As winner of the 2011 Africa Cup, Kenya were invited to the international test rugby tournament held in Dubai last December. This was a major step forward for Kenya, being exposed on the international rugby scene. If Kenya can build on from that point they would need to retain the Elgon Cup, win the Victoria Cup (Zimbabwe hold this) and retain their Africa Cup title.

Uganda won the last time these two teams met in Kampala. The Ugandans will be looking to win at home again with the crucial second leg Elgon Cup fixture next weekend. This match also doubles as the first Victoria Cup fixture. Uganda, Kenya and Zimbabwe play a home-away annual series for this trophy.
