Kenya 29, Namibia 22 in Antananarivo (WCQ Africa, AfricaCupDiv.1A)
Zimbabwe 55, Madagascar 6 at Antananarivo (WCQ Africa, AfricaCupDiv.1A)

Briefly.
Kenya and Zimbabwe were the victors on day 1 of this crucial World Cup qualifying tournament.

Namibia suffered a shock loss to Kenya, the rising starts of African rugby. Zimbabwe showed they are ready for a return to World Cup Finals with a big win over hosts Madagascar.

WORLD CUP QUALIFYING: Africa Cup, Division 1A

28.06.2014
Kenya v Namibia in Antananarivo (WCQ Africa, AfricaCupDiv.1A)
Zimbabwe v Madagascar (WCQ Africa, AfricaCupDiv.1A)

Briefly
This is a hugely important tournament in the island African republic of Madagascar. The winner qualifies directly to the 2015 Rugby World Cup finals. The second-placed team joins Hong Kong, Uruguay and Russia in the repechage stage.

Namibia is the favourites to take the title. I’d expect Kenya to be a threat as will Madagascar on their home turf and if front of what will be 30,000 crowds. Yes that does read 30,000! Don’t right off Zimbabwe although their preparations would be the least impressive of the four nations.

Hosts Madagascar played in a tournament in Reunion, Namibia played against South African provincial sides as did Kenya.

Predictions
Namibia by 10 v Kenya
Madagascar by 5 v Zimbabwe

WORLD CUP QUALIFYING AFRICA; CAR DIVISION 1A

10.07.2013
Kenya 52, Uganda 11 in Antananarivo (CAR Division 1A; Semi-Final)
Zimbabwe 38, Madagascar 18 in Antananarivo (CAR Division 1A; Semi-Final)

Briefly
Kenya ran away with their semi-final against Uganda meaning there will be a new CAR Africa Cup holder at the end of this tournament.

Zimbabwe caused a minor surprise when they outplayed hosts Madagascar 38-18. Although newly promoted, Madagascar were expected to win against a so-called depleted Zimbabwe side.

The ‘Sables’ now meet Kenya in the final on Sunday but all eyes will be on the Madagascar-Uganda match as the loser drops to Division 1B for 2014 and thus eliminated from World Cup qualifying.

Sunday’s Fixtures
14.07.2013

Kenya v Zimbabwe in Antananarivo (CAR Division 1A; Final)
Uganda v Madagascar in Antananarivo (CAR Division 1A; Play off 3rd-4th)

WORLD CUP QUALIFYING, AFRICA; CAR Division 1A

10.07.2013
Kenya v Uganda in Antananarivo (CAR Division 1A; Semi-Final)
Zimbabwe v Madagascar Antananarivo (CAR Division 1A; Semi-Final)

Image

Venue: Stade de Mahamasina
This tournament was to be held in Antananarivo’s newest stadium but this tournament will be played at the venue of last years CAR Division 1B tournament. Capacity is about 30,000 which will be expected Saturday if not today.

Preview
The stage is set for the penultimate World Cup qualifying action in Africa. This tournament is not so much about the winner but about the loser. The losing team in Saturday’s playoff will be eliminated from the World Cup 2015. Their place in 2014 will be taken by Namibia who recently won Division 1B. The winner of this competition in 2014 will fill the second Africa place at the 2015 Finals.

As hosts Madagascar must be the favourite to win despite the fact that they were promoted from CAR Division 1C in 2013 following a dramatic 57-54 win over Namibia in extra time. The ‘Makis’ have such a huge crowd support and always play well above their level on home soil.

They will have tough competition from either Kenya or Uganda. Zimbabwe, last years 1A winner and holder of the CAR Africa Cup, will not have their strongest side because of a dispute between some of their top players and management.

First Semi-Final
Kenya v Uganda

Referee: Lesego Legoete (South Africa)

These two traditional and long time rivals have already played twice this year. Kenya retained the Elgon Cup when they defeated Uganda 19-13 in Nairobi in the second leg. They lost the first 16-17 so ended with the better aggregate. It was a close competition and I would expect it to be the same for this first semi-final.

Second semi-final
Zimbabwe v Madagascar

Referee: Lourens van der Merwe (South Africa)

Preview
Although Madagascar is new to this level of competition they will have some distinct advantages over Zimbabwe.

Firstly they have the crowd. The game in Madagascar is played with so much passion and support the crowd is worth at least a ten-point start for the home side.

Secondly, the ‘Makis’ play the game at such a frenetic pace and passion that the opposition are often left in bewilderment as they concede another try from the deep.

Thirdly, Zimbabwe are in all sorts of strife over their team. A number of top players were left out of selection following a last-minute complaint and petition against team management. Zimbabwe’s squad numbers only twenty-two with only one back on the bench!

On paper it looks like an easy win for Madagascar.

NAMIBIA V TUNISIA; World Cup Qualifier, Africa, Division 1B Final

15.06.2013

Venue: Stade Iba Mar Doip Dakar

Referee:

Preview
This is a crucial game this weekend. Namibia were relegated to Africa Division 1B last year after losing 54-57 to Madagascar in a dramatic game played out in extra time.

That result just made Namibia’s quest to reach the 2015 Rugby World Cup finals a whole lot more difficult. The Africa 2 spot goes to the winner of Africa Division 1A in 2014. So Namibia must win this game to progress to 1A for next year and aim for that top spot.

Tunisia will also be out to regain their place in Africa Division 1A and try and make the Rugby World Cup finals for the first time.

Those outcomes rest with this result in Dakar, Senegal, host to this years World Cup qualifiers.

Wednesday’s games saw Nambia defeat Senegal 35-12 and Tunisia defeating Botswana 43-12.

What a doings! With the with drawl of Cameroon this competition has been thrown into confusion. What will happen on Saturday if we end up with two winners I’m not to say!

This is Ivory Coast’s first game in this tournament and the first since 2010. They pulled out of test rugby commitments in 2011 due to the civil strife in the country. They were relegated, as a result, to Division 1C from 1B.

These two sides have never met in a rugby test match before.

10.07.2011
Tunisia v Zimbabwe
Kenya v Uganda

Preview
The Africa Cup is up for grabs in this the top division of African rugby. This tournament has a big act to follow after the dramas in Division 1B in Madagascar.

There is really only a losing team in this tournament. It won’t be the end of the 2015 Rugby World Cup road for the losing team. They will have a chance to win Division B and gain promotion to this division for 2015. It will be in that year that the second automatic qualifier will be found. The second team will have a chance to get into the finals via a repechage challenge.

08.07.2012
Madagascar 57, Namibia 54 in Antananarivo
Senegal 26, Morocco 25 in Antananarivo

Briefly
Well, two amazing results from, what I believe, were two amazing rugby test matches. Madagascar won in extra time after scored were level at 43-43 full time. I can’t imagine the wild crowd scenes after this game. I’m hoping nobody was injured as they were last Wednesday on day 1.

We’ll follow the developments as heard by forum members..

‘No one wants to come 4th as that will be RWC2015 over for them. This could be a desperate battle!’-‘Yamaha Kiwi’

‘Morocco lead 17 to 9 at half-time. It's a shame that one team has to be relegated: both Morocco and Senegal were minutes away from winning their respective openers.’ – ‘Natal’

‘Morocco 20-9 Senegal at the start of the second half. Looking grave for Senegal - to think that they were leading Namibia with minutes left.
Morocco 20-12 Senegal - 55 minutes.
Morocco 20-19 Senegal - 58 minutes (-ish).
Morocco 20-26 Senegal - Morocco collapsing in the second half as they did against Madagascar.
15 minutes remain.’ – ‘Natal’

‘Morocco score a late try, but miss the conversion. Final result:
Morocco 25-26 Senegal
Morocco are, regrettably, eliminated from RWC 2015. They could easily have won both of their matches.’ – ‘Natal’

‘Thats 52nd IRB ranked beating 27th Surprised , like Switzerland beating Portugal!’ – ‘Quentin’

Madagascar 57, Namibia 54-after extra time!

‘Not terribly helpful, but this website (http://www.orange.mg/index.php?option=com_orangeinfo&Itemid=403&newscatid=4) says that Madagascar led 7-0 after just two minutes. No updates since then.
How great would a Madagascar victory be?’ – ‘Natal’

‘Incredible! Madagascar lead 29-14 at half-time!’ – ‘Natal’

‘WOW! Good luck Madagascar. However, a bit concerning for Namibia.’ – ‘jhar367’

‘This would have been BRILLIANT to watch. Fantastic tournament! All four teams were so even. And thank you Alain Vivier for the updates.’-‘Natal’

‘Absolutely unthinkable. Maybe the most astonishing rugby result I can recall. Remember less than ten years ago this was close to a hundred point loss for Madagascar.’- ‘4N’

‘55 - 17 to Namibia in 2005, 116 - 0 to Namibia in 2002, both times at Windhoek (thanks to Rugint's site!).’- ‘Quentin’ (Thanks Quentin-RugInt)

TEST RUGBY: WORLD CUP QUALIFYING; Africa CAR Division 1B

08.07.2012
Namibia v Madagascar in Antananarivo (WCQ Africa; CAR Division 1B Final)

Venue: Mahamasina Stadium

Referee: Mark Lawrence (South Africa)

Preview
All is ready for the event of the year in the capital of this African island republic. Everybody in town will be there to see their home team battle Namibia. It’s the CAR Division 1B final and both teams will be all out to win a place in Division 1A for 2013.

Namibia in still smarting from their drop to Division 1B. Unable for financial reasons to participate in the Africa Cup finals after the 2011 Rugby World Cup, Namibia has had to front up here in Madagascar to win back their place. On Wednesday they just got up to defeat a very gallant Senegalese side.

Namibia just made it past Senegal on Wednesday to clinch a place in the final.

In front of them is a rugby-mad local side backed by more than 35,000 equally rugby-mad home crowd. The stadium will be packed. Hopefully there will not be a repeat of the stampede Wednesday that injured a score of spectators.

It’ll be a cracker!!

TEST RUGBY IN AFRICA: World Cup Qualifying Africa. CAR Division 1B Playoff

08.07.2012
Morocco v Senegal in Antananarivo (WCQ Africa; CAR Division 1B)

Venue: Mahamasina Stadium

Referee: Lesego Legoete (South Africa)

Preview
Following their loses on Wednesday, these two teams will be desperate to win this rugby test match. The losing team will drop to CAR Division 1C for 2013. Not only that they will drop out of Rugby World Cup 2015 contention. This is a game you do not want to lose.

I expect the experience of the Moroccans to prevail.

These two teams have never played a rugby test match against each other before.

GWC Rugby Rankings
Africa Cup: Senegal 7th, Morocco 26th
Note: Because the GWC Ranking system deletes a team’s position if they do not compete at test rugby on that table in a calendar year Morocco dropped out in 2011. Following their loss on Wednesday that appear at the table but at the bottom. They need to win today to go above Senegal on the tables for Africa. If they lose they stay at 26th!

IRB Rankings
Morocco 56.11, Senegal 45.24

Prediction: Morocco by 15 points

TEST RUGBY IN AFRICA: World Cup Qualifying Africa. CAR Africa Cup 1B Day One

04.07.2012
Madagascar 35, Morocco 28 in Antananarivo (WCQ Africa; CAR Division 1B)
Namibia 20, Senegal 18 in Antananarivo (WCQ Africa CAR Division 1B)

Briefly
It was all fireworks and excitement on day in front of a huge crowd of 35,000 in the Madagascan capital Antananarivo. If you didn’t know it by now this stat. is confirmation that rugby is THE national sport in this island republic off the east coast of Africa.

The home side came from behind to overhaul their Moroccan opponents to win this crucial game. The winner plays in the final Sunday today against Namibia.

The scenes of jubilation following the victory were dampened by a stampede which injured some 20 adults and children, some of them seriously. With a bigger crowd expected today security, safety and organisation is going to have to be better to avoid a repeat panic.

Namibia had to also come from behind to win the game in the last five minutes. Senegal held an 18-12 lead at that time before Namibian flyhalf Botha scored a try and then a dropped goal in that last five minutes.

These results bode well for African rugby. The IRB site states that the growth of rugby in Africa has grown 33% in the last four years. Based on numbers now playing for official clubs in official competitions shows that this represents the fastest growth on the planet.

If Madagascar wins against Namibia on Sunday the national stadium in Antananarivo will be the most exciting place to be today if not the safest. I’d sure be there if I could!!
