Chile won comfortably 32-3 over Brazil last weekend. They have their France-based players available, two forwards. This gives Chile a much stronger team than they fielded last year.

Paraguay struggled against Uruguay in the opening CONSUR A game played in early April. They lost 3-77. They will be a stronger proposition in front of their home crowd playing in their brand new stadium.

The last time Chile played in Asuncion was 1998. Chile won 58-17. Paraguay last defeated Chile in 1993, winning 25-24 in Santiago.

TEST RUGBY RESULTS: World

25.04.2015
Korea 33, Hong Kong 26 in Hong Kong (ARC Top 3)
Chile 32, Brazil 3 in Santiago (CONSUR A)
Trinidad Tobago 30, Mexico 16 in Port of Spain (NACRA Carib. Champ. Final)

Briefly
Korea edged out home side Hong Kong after building a big lead at half time. The Koreans looked to be a very strong side and managed to hold off a big Hong Kong comeback in the second half.

Chile were too good in a disappointing display by the Brazilians whilst Trinidad Tobago gathered their second Caribbean Championship title when they defeated Mexico. The Mexicans can be proud of their achievement in making th final after being promoted just last season.

TEST RUGBY THIS WEEKEND Part 2

25.04.2015
Korea v Hong Kong in Hong Kong (ARC Top 3)
Chile v Brazil in Santiago (CONSUR A)
Mexico v Trinidad Tobago in Port of Spain (NACRA Carib. Championship Final)

Briefly
The big clash between Asia’s No.2 and No.3 teams will be full of interest. The new round robin/home-away structure of the elite level of Asian rugby means every game counts.

Brazil travels to Santiago in another important CONSUR A clash. Last year Brazil upset Chile in Brazil but can they do the same away? Chile has not been playing of recent seasons and Brazil’s good showing against Uruguay last weekend could mean a repeat of last year’s result.

Mexico and Trinidad Tobago square off in the NACRA Caribbean final. Two new teams in this year’s final and as Mexico is just newly promoted to this level this final has more interest in it.

TEST RUGBY THIS SATURDAY

24.05.2014
Korea v Philippines in Makati (Asia Five Nations)
Chile v Argentina in Santiago (CONSUR Cup)
Germany v Russia in Hamburg (WCQ Europe R5 Playoff)
Trinidad & Tobago v Barbados in Port of Spain (Caribb. Champ., South League)
Swaziland v Lesotho in Maruso (Friendly)

Briefly
There will be an interesting battle between Korea and Philippines. Whilst the Philippines defeated Sri Lanka away by one point last weekend, and as a result they would have grounds for some optimism, it would be a brave soul to not predict a Korean win.

At steak is a place in the 2015 Asian Elite rugby competition which will feature and home-away series involving Asia three top teams. At the moment Japan is No.1 followed by Hong Kong. Korea is favoured to be the third nation. The game be a close encounter in stages but I just can’t see the Philippines overpowering the Koreans.

Prediction: Korea by 20 points.

Argentina should not experiences any scary moments in their game against Chile. The Chileans have not performed well in 2014 and although playing away from home the Jaguars (well in effect Argentina ‘A’) should have no problems.

Prediction: Argentina by 35 points

The Germany-Russia clash is covered elsewhere on this blog.

Barbados lost 19-48 to Guyana at home last weekend and now have to travel to Trindad for a showdown with the local side. Last year they lost this game at home 6-19 so it will be an uphill struggle for the Barbadians.

Prediction: Trinidad and Tobago by 26 points.

Will it be played? After a number of postponnements, the match awaited Lesotho-Swaziland return game should be played today in Maruso. I’d expect the home side to win a good struggle.

Prediction: Swaziland by 10 points.

SOUTH AMERICAN CHAMPIONSHIP

03.05.2014
Brazil v Uruguay in Bento Goncalves (South America Championship)
Chile v Paraguay in Chile (South America Championship)

Previews
The Brazil-Uruguay clash has mouth watering prospects. To be fair to Brazil another upset victory in this competition is unlikely against Uruguay. The Uruguayans will be just too fit, skilled and organised. I’d expect Brazil to give them a torrid first half until Uruguay’s condition outlasts their northern neighbours.

Image
‘The match will be at Estádio da Montanha, in Bento Gonçalves, Rio Grande do Sul, for 6.000 people. ‘
Thanks to ‘victorsra’ at http://www.fira-aer-rugby.com/forum2007/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=4262&start=285

Chile will be a far more experienced and wiser outfit when they take on the visiting Paraguayans. I expect their line up will be a more experienced.

Predictions
Uruguay by 25 v Brazil
Chile by 60 v Paraguay

SOUTH AMERICAN CHAMPIONSHIP

26.04.2014
Uruguay 34, Paraguay 10 in Asuncion (South American Championship)
Brazil 24, Chile 16 in Barueri (South American Championship)

Briefly
Brazil caused yet another upset in the world of test rugby. Playing at home they outplayed a somewhat inexperienced Chilean side 24-16. They were dominant in the loose and despite having a smaller pack outscrummaged their opponents.

Uruguay had to work hard to out score Paraguay in Asuncion.

In this new format for CONSUR rugby last years victors qualify to play for the new CONSUR Cup. They include Argentina, Chile and Uruguay. This year the name South American Championship has been revived and will determine which two nations will play Argentina for the CONSUR Cup 2015.

Also new is the home-away basis of the Championship. This ensures that each nation receives at least one home game, something the ‘Tournament at one venue’ of the past didn’t offer.

Paraguay v Uruguay in Asuncion (South American Championship)

Venue: Asuncion

Referee: Unusually http://www.rugby365.com has not listed any referees for this tournament.

Uruguay travels to Asuncion to play neighbours Paraguay first game up. Paraguay has traditionally struggled against the stronger Uruguayan team and I see no change to that for 2014.

Uruguay has had recent test matches against the USA for the second World Cup finals place for Americas. They lost and now face the difficult repechage rounds to try and qualify. The benefit is that they have played together so far in 2014 whereas Paraguay hasn’t.

The last time these two teams met Uruguay notched up 100 points in Iguazi in 2011. Could the same happen again?

2014 Paraguay v Uruguay
Paraguay starting XV. Image thanks to https://www.facebook.com/UnionDeRugbyDelParaguay?fref=ts

Prediction: Paraguay playing at home in front of a home crowd could put up some resistance in the first half but experience and better conditioning will see Uruguay ran away with the game second half. Uruguay by 60 points

Brazil v Chile in Barueri (South American Championship)

Venue: Barueri is near Sao Paulo

Preview
Brazil has been forwarded as one of the fastest rugby growing nations in the world. They still need to defeat either Uruguay or Chile to really announce their arrival on the world stage. This I still think they will find hard to do today. Chile just has that little more experience. But if Brazil is to crack the Chilean nut then doing it today at home will be their chance.

Last year Brazil pushed Chile to a 22-38 loss in Temuco in Chile. In 2012 Brazil lost 6-19 in Santiago. So this could be Brazil’s day but Chile will remain favourite to win.

Prediction: Chile by 7 points.

09.11.2013
New Zealand Maoris v United States in Philadelphia
Fiji v Portugal in Lisbon
Romania v Tonga in Bucharest
Spain v Chile in Santiago

Briefly
There are some interesting match ups in the Northern Hemisphere this weekend. The New Zealand Maoris displayed a typical Kiwi hard defensive game, quick skills and able to pounce on any opposition mistakes. The USA travel to Europe after this games whilst the Maoris go home.

Fiji should have little difficulty winning against Portugal but Romania could be in for a tough time against Tonga at home.

Spain plays its first game on a South American tour but should win against Chile.

Predictions
NZ Maoris by 40 v USA
Fiji by 30 v Portugal
Tonga by 10 v Romania
Spain by 26 v Chile

WORLD CUP QUALIFYING: CONSUR A 4 May

04.05.2013
Chile v Uruguay in Montevideo (WCQ Americas; CONSUR A)

Venue: Estadio Charrúa

Preview
This is the game that will decide who is placed second in CONSUR A 2013. As Argentina has already qualified the contest is between Chile and Uruguay.

Uruguay already has many advantages over Chile. Firstly they have been involved in June tournaments in Europe for a number of years. They have a cross-border competition set up with Argentina. They also have the home advantage.

For Chile there is little to indicate they will defeat Uruguay. They played a weaker team against Argentina mid-weak with this match in mind. Their record against Uruguay has nevertheless been impressive over the last two seasons. Uruguay may not have put forward their strongest combinations in this tournament over the last two seasons but Chile won last year and lost by a point the year before.

Argentina v Brazil in Montevideo (WCQ Americas; CONSUR A)

Briefly
This is the other game to be played. I cannot see Brazil getting anywhere near the Argentina side even if it’s their fourth strongest side available. I’d expect a better performance than Wednesday’s heavy loss to Uruguay and their 100-point loss last year.

Prediction: Argentina by 60 points

CHILE v BRAZIL: WORLD CUP QUALIFYING, AMERICAS: CONSUR A

27.04.2013
Chile v Brazil in Temuca (WCQ Americas; CONSUR A

Preview
The final leg of the first round of World Cup qualifying matches begins in South America. CONSUR is the organising body for that region.

Brazil retained its place in CONSUR A after defeating Paraguay, the winner of CONSUR B, last September.

The Brazilians, rather strangely, begin this tournament with a flight to Chile to play the local side. I say strange because all the other games are in Montevideo. This gives a huge home advantage to the one team Brazil is more likely to defeat,

Brazil had a warm up test series a week ago against Mexico at home. Brazil won both tests 50-14 and 76-5.

Chile will be a far more difficult opposition, especially at home. Last year the Brazilians pushed Chile before losing 6-19. Playing their second string side the Brazilians were thumped 110-0 by Argentina. Brazil then put in a desperate effort against Uruguay, finally losing 15-27. Their aim will be to win one game either against Chile or Uruguay.

Prediction: Chile by 10 points

PORTUGAL v CHILE

17.11.2012

Portugal will play it’s second game on this tour of South America. Last week they caused a minor surprise by defeating Uruguay in Montevideo 32-25. I’d expect Portugal to win here in Santiago as well.

GWC Rugby Rankings do not apply as Chile is not on the world table.

Brazil v Chile in Santiago (CONSUR A)

Venue: La cancha del CARR de FERUCHI en el Parque Mahuida de La Reina.

Referee: Matias Fresia (Argentina)

Preview
This the 34th South American Championships is being held in Santiago, Chile.
The new format provides more games at a competitive level with all teams playing Argentina.

Brazil is the rising star of South American rugby. In the 2011 South American championships they lost by 19 points to Chile, by 21 to Uruguay and defeated Paraguay 51-14. The defeat of Paraguay relegated that team to this years CONSUR B.

Brazil went on to play in the Emirates Airlines Cup of Nations, held by hosts United Arab Emirates, in Dubai, last November-December. This was very successful venture by Brazil. Such cross-continental test matches will ensure that the Brazilians will be exposed to different playing styles, different locations and hopefully an improved technical appreciation of this great global game.

2011 Brazil EA Cup of Nations
Brazil is the rising rugby nation in South America. This is the team that played in Dubai last November-December.

Chile has been a little quieter. They defeated all three nations in last year’s South American Championship preliminary round. They were soundly defeated by Argentina in the semi-final. Today they will want to continue their historical success against Brazil and put themselves in the top three South American nations.

TEST RUGBY TOURNAMENT: CONSUR A Preliminary Continues

17.05.2011
Uruguay v Brazil in Iguazu (CONSUR A Preliminary)
Chile v Paraguay in Iguazu (CONSUR A)

Briefly
I suspect both Chile and Uruguay will field teams not as strong as Saturday’s in view of the fact they will face each other on Saturday in what will basically be the Preliminary final.

Paraguay will be hoping to lessen damage following their near century point loss to Uruguay on Saturday. Brazil is the rising star of CONSUR rugby and will be hoping for a win but to get close to their southern neighbour will be an achievement in itself

Predictions
Uruguay by 20 v Brazil
Chile by 49 v Paraguay

Preview
This will be a first in international rugby. This is the first time these two teams have met at 15's test rugby. It is the first time Tonga has visited South America.

Tonga are on their way to the America's rugby Championship. To be held in Cordoba, Argentina, the tournament will feature the 'A' sides of Canada, United States, Argentina (The Jaguars) and Tonga (who will compete as Tonga 'A'). Tongan players involved in European rugby and in competitions in New Zealand and Australia are not included.

Sponsored by the IRB,the aim of the tournament is to provide a platform for developing players in the four Unions ahead of their participation in the 2011 Rugby World Cup. “This new-look Americas Rugby Championship represents a great step forward for the Game across North and South America, providing an expanded competition format that will generate exciting and competitive matches, while allowing the participating Unions to take a closer look at the development of their elite domestic-based players ahead of RWC 2011...Canada, USA, Tonga and Argentina are all priority Unions for our High Performance investment programme and this new tournament structure is central to the IRB’s strategic aim of increasing global competitiveness and in particular the performance of Tier 2 teams at Rugby World Cup,” said IRB Head of Development and Performance Mark Egan.
