These two teams are very evenly matched at this level of competition. Honours were shared last year but prior to that Brazil had the upper hand.

Paraguay will be shaping towards it’s clash with Argentina on 23 May. They came second in last years CONSUR A tournament and so qualified for this year’s CONSUR Cup along with Uruguay. Argentina won’t be at full strength but even so it will be a formidable task to hold the Pumas. Good wins against Brazil are a must if Paraguay is seen to be competitive.

Brazil as a rugby nation is going from strength to strength. The game is developing rapidly throughout the nation. With the 2016 Olympics in Brazil just around the corner and the reintroduction of rugby (in seven’s format) at the Olympics has brought rugby in Brazil to the attention of the world.

Yakarés without the good third rower Carlos Bareiro, for me the best against Chile.

Brazil is also without the best player, João Luiz da Ros "Ige", flanker.
Martin Schaefer is also out of the Tupis because his son will born.

Chile won comfortably 32-3 over Brazil last weekend. They have their France-based players available, two forwards. This gives Chile a much stronger team than they fielded last year.

Paraguay struggled against Uruguay in the opening CONSUR A game played in early April. They lost 3-77. They will be a stronger proposition in front of their home crowd playing in their brand new stadium.

TEST RUGBY RESULTS: World

25.04.2015
Korea 33, Hong Kong 26 in Hong Kong (ARC Top 3)
Chile 32, Brazil 3 in Santiago (CONSUR A)
Trinidad Tobago 30, Mexico 16 in Port of Spain (NACRA Carib. Champ. Final)

Briefly
Korea edged out home side Hong Kong after building a big lead at half time. The Koreans looked to be a very strong side and managed to hold off a big Hong Kong comeback in the second half.

Chile were too good in a disappointing display by the Brazilians whilst Trinidad Tobago gathered their second Caribbean Championship title when they defeated Mexico. The Mexicans can be proud of their achievement in making th final after being promoted just last season.

TEST RUGBY THIS WEEKEND Part 2

25.04.2015
Korea v Hong Kong in Hong Kong (ARC Top 3)
Chile v Brazil in Santiago (CONSUR A)
Mexico v Trinidad Tobago in Port of Spain (NACRA Carib. Championship Final)

Briefly
The big clash between Asia’s No.2 and No.3 teams will be full of interest. The new round robin/home-away structure of the elite level of Asian rugby means every game counts.

Brazil travels to Santiago in another important CONSUR A clash. Last year Brazil upset Chile in Brazil but can they do the same away? Chile has not been playing of recent seasons and Brazil’s good showing against Uruguay last weekend could mean a repeat of last year’s result.

Mexico and Trinidad Tobago square off in the NACRA Caribbean final. Two new teams in this year’s final and as Mexico is just newly promoted to this level this final has more interest in it.

CONSUR A

18.04.2015
Uruguay 48, Brazil 9 in Montevideo (CONSUR A)

Briefly
Brazil held Uruguay until towards the end of the second half when Uruguay’s better physical condition and experience saw them score 4 tries and blow out the score. This was a most encouraging display by Brazil.

Sunday, April 12, 2015

TEST RUGBY RESULTS: 11 April

11.04.2015
Uruguay 77, Paraguay 3 in Montevideo (CONSUR A)
Czech Republic 12, Croatia 9 in Zagreb (REC 2A)

Briefly
Uruguay, without their top players ran out 77-3 against Paraguay to notch up their first victory in the 2015 CONSUR A. Uruguay plays Brazil next weekend.

The Czech Republic just squeaked past Croatia in Zagreb.

URUGUAY v PARAGUAY CONSUR A

11.04.2015

Referee: Henrique Platais (Brasil);

Uruguay se enfrenta a Paraguay

Uruguay has a huge advantage over their neighbours Paraguay. They have a greater exposure in world rugby. They have qualified for the Rugby World Cup Finals later in the year, get invited annually to European competitions and have a healthy cross-border relationship with Argentina. Urugauy has already been active with their "Charrúas XV", playing in Argentina.

By contrast Paraguay plays in the annual CONSUR competitions. That’s it!

On that basis there should be daylight between these two teams. Paraguay surprise all last year by cutting Chile out of the ‘Big 3’ CONSUR Cup contest.
Uruguay will not field their strongest side however I can’t see the Paraguayans getting close.Uruguay has a huge home advantage.

Last Five Encounters
26.04.2014 Uruguay 34-10 in Asuncion (South America A Championship)
14.05.2011 Uruguay 102-6 in Iguazu (CONSUR A Preliminary)

25.04.2009 Uruguay 85-7 in Montevideo (CONSUR A Preliminary)
30.04.2003 Uruguay 53-7 in Montevideo (24th Sth.American Champ., Div.1)

Paraguay has never defeated Uruguay in contests going back to 1971.

TEST RUGBY THIS WEEKEND

11.04.2015
Paraguay v Uruguay in Montevideo (CONSUR A)
Czech Republic v Croatia in Croatia (REC 2A)
Greece v Estonia in Montenegro (REC 3, Semi-final 1)
Slovakia v Montenegro in Montenegro (REC 3, Semi-final 2)
Mexico v Cayman Islands in Grand Cayman (Caribbean Championship, North)
Guyana v Trinidad Tobago (Caribbean Championship, South)
St Lucia v Curacao in Castries (Caribbean Cup, South)

Briefly
CONSUR A 2015 competition begins with Paraguay travelling to Montevideo. This round is to find the qualifiers for the 2016 CONSUR Cup, the elite level of South American rugby.

Montenegro will become the latest member of the test rugby family when they host the REC Division 3 competition this weekend. The finals will be played next week mid-week.

The Caribbean Championship and Cup competitions continue. Mexico and Cayman Islands will be virtually playing for the North title, the winner facing the South winner. That will be either Guyana or Trinidad Tobago who also play this weekend. The surprise is the USA South is already out of the competition and will in fact have to face the Cup North winner in a promotion-relegation match later.

TEST RUGBY RESULTS: Saturday 4 May

04.05.2013
Japan 64, Korea 5 in Tokyo (WCQ Asia; Asia Five Nations)
Hong Kong 59, Philippines 20 in Manilla (WCQ Asia; Asia Five Nations)
Uruguay 23, Chile 9 in Montevideo (WCQ Americas; CONSUR A)
Argentina 83, Brazil 0 in Montevideo (WCQ Americas; CONSUR A)
USA South 9, Cayman Islands 7 in Marietta (NACRA Caribb.Champ, North R2)

Briefly
Uruguay is the team that has qualified for repechage rounds. They defeated Chile in the final CONSUR match. Brazil’s 0-83 loss to Argentina means they will probably, as per last year, play the CONSUR B winner at some stage.

Japan took a firm grip on the No.1 spot in Asia with an easy win over Korea. Hong Kong stormed back in the second half to defeat Philippines in Manilla. This sets up the Hong Kong-Korea clash on 18 May as most likely decider for that second Asian World Cup qualifying place and a chance to qualify for the finals via repechage rounds.

The USA South continued its winning ways with a close 9-7 win in appalling conditions in Marietta, Georgia.

WORLD CUP QUALIFYING: CONSUR A 4 May

04.05.2013
Chile v Uruguay in Montevideo (WCQ Americas; CONSUR A)

Venue: Estadio Charrúa

Preview
This is the game that will decide who is placed second in CONSUR A 2013. As Argentina has already qualified the contest is between Chile and Uruguay.

Uruguay already has many advantages over Chile. Firstly they have been involved in June tournaments in Europe for a number of years. They have a cross-border competition set up with Argentina. They also have the home advantage.

For Chile there is little to indicate they will defeat Uruguay. They played a weaker team against Argentina mid-weak with this match in mind. Their record against Uruguay has nevertheless been impressive over the last two seasons. Uruguay may not have put forward their strongest combinations in this tournament over the last two seasons but Chile won last year and lost by a point the year before.

Argentina v Brazil in Montevideo (WCQ Americas; CONSUR A)

Briefly
This is the other game to be played. I cannot see Brazil getting anywhere near the Argentina side even if it’s their fourth strongest side available. I’d expect a better performance than Wednesday’s heavy loss to Uruguay and their 100-point loss last year.

02.05.2013
Argentina 84, Chile 10 in Montevideo (WCQ Americas; CONSUR A)
Uruguay 58, Brazil 7 in Montevideo (WCQ Americas; CONSUR A)

Briefly
Chile fielded their second XV against Argentina. Their focus will be on Uruguay on Saturday. Whoever wins that game qualifies for the next round in the America’s World Cup qualifying process. That team will play the loser of the USA-Canada series which is being played in August.

Uruguay completed the day with a comprehensive win over Brazil. The Brazilians would have targeted this game to win but were outplayed.

ARGENTINA v URUGUAY: World Cup Qualifying Americas; CONSUR A

27.04.2013
Argentina v Uruguay in Montevideo

Preview
Argentina has already qualified for the 2015 Rugby World Cup finals. The team that comes second will qualify for the repechage section. That team will play the loser of the USA-Canada series to be played later in the year. The winner of that game goes directly to the World Cup finals.

The team from Argentina will officially be classed as a test side and all the fixtures will be regarded as test matches. This is despite the fact the following Argentine players were not considered; The elite squad, the Jaguars (Argentina A) and the Pampas XV (the side that plays in the South African domestic series. In effect this will Argentina’s 4th side.

This could mean that Uruguay has a chance of winning this game. Last year they lost 5-40 to Argentina in the first round, then defeated Chile by 1 point before defeating Brazil 27-15. However it is most likely that this Argentine side will end up with more pace and skill that their Latin American neighbours. I would expect the result to be closer than last year.

Prediction: Argentina by 20 points

CHILE v BRAZIL: WORLD CUP QUALIFYING, AMERICAS: CONSUR A

27.04.2013
Chile v Brazil in Temuca (WCQ Americas; CONSUR A

Preview
The final leg of the first round of World Cup qualifying matches begins in South America. CONSUR is the organising body for that region.

Brazil retained its place in CONSUR A after defeating Paraguay, the winner of CONSUR B, last September.

The Brazilians, rather strangely, begin this tournament with a flight to Chile to play the local side. I say strange because all the other games are in Montevideo. This gives a huge home advantage to the one team Brazil is more likely to defeat,

Brazil had a warm up test series a week ago against Mexico at home. Brazil won both tests 50-14 and 76-5.

Chile will be a far more difficult opposition, especially at home. Last year the Brazilians pushed Chile before losing 6-19. Playing their second string side the Brazilians were thumped 110-0 by Argentina. Brazil then put in a desperate effort against Uruguay, finally losing 15-27. Their aim will be to win one game either against Chile or Uruguay.

Prediction: Chile by 10 points

Argentina v Uruguay in Montevideo (WCQ Americas; CONSUR A)

Wednesday, April 24, 2013

TEST RUGBY THIS WEEKEND Saturday 27 April

27.04.2012
Japan v Hong Kong in Hong Kong (WCQ Asia 5 Nations)
Korea v United Arab Emirates in Dubai (WCQ Asia 5 Nations)
Chile v Brazil in Temuca (WCQ Americas; CONSUR A
Argentina v Uruguay in Montevideo (WCQ Americas; CONSUR A)
Croatia v Lithuania in Vilnius (WCQ Europe R3; ENC 2A)

Briefly
The Asia Five Nations/World Cup Qualifying fixtures continue this weekend. Japan faces Hong Kong away whilst Korea travels to the Middle East to play United Arab Emirates. This will be Korea’s first game in the competition for 2013, Japan and Hong Kong already registering wins last weekend.

Another World Cup Qualifying series gets underway this weekend as well. Although Argentina has already qualified there is a repechage position up for grans for the side that comes second. That side will play the loser of the USA-Canada series. And that side goes to the World Cup finals in 2015. So there is plenty to play for between Chile, Uruguay and Brazil.

Finally Croatia plays Lithuania in one of the final European Nations Cup matches for the 2012-13 season. The result has no bearing on the fact that the Netherlands has won the ENC 2A section.

Cyprus 72, Greece 5 in Paphos (ENC 2D)
Bulgaria 26, Finland 24 in Turku (ENC 2D)
Cayman Islands 27, Bahamas 7 in Grand Cayman (WCA Americas; NACRA North R2)

Briefly
A very busy weekend with other commitments meant that I could not cover any test rugby.

The Barbarians RFC began their 3 match programme with a loss to England. They play Ireland tomorrow (Tuesday) and Wales on Saturday.

Kazakhstan are relegated to Division1 for 2013. They will need to win that Division next year in order to be in qualification for a place at the 2015 Rugby World Cup.

Hong Kong and Korea finished their Asia Five Nations programme with good wins.

Argentina held their place at the top of the CONSUR table. Fielding basically their home-based team they were comfortable winners over Chile.

Brazil played well to hold Uruguay 15-20 until the Uruguayans scored a last minute try. A Brave display by the ever improving Brazilians.

Croatia held their place in ENC 2A for 2012-14 with a convincing win away.

Cyprus finished top of their Division 2D table with another crushing victory, this time over Greece. Also in 2D Bulgaria ended any hopes Finland had of staying in ENC 2D with a close win away.

The Cayman Islands continued on their winning way, defeating the Bahamas at home.

TEST RUGBY RESULTS: CONSUR A

23.05.2012
Argentina 110, Brazil 0 in Santiago (CONSUR A)
Uruguay 27, Chile 26 in Santiago (CONSUR A)

Brazil fielded virtually a second XV against Argentina with the aim of saving their top players for the crucial clash this Saturday against Uruguay.

Uruguay defeated Chile by a single point but then has to front up against Saturday against what will be a fired up Brazilian side.

TEST RUGBY THIS WEEKEND: Saturday 26 May

26.05.2012
United Arab Emirates v Korea in Seoul (Asia 5 Nations)
Kazakhstan v Hong Kong in Hong Kong (Asia 5 Nations)
Argentina v Chile in Santiago (CONSUR A)
Brazil v Uruguay in Santiago (CONSUR A)
Greece v Cyprus in Paphos (ENC 2D)
Bulgaria v Finland in Turku (ENC 2D)
Cayman Islands v Bahamas in G. Cayman (WCA Americas; NACRA North R2)

Briefly
Japan are the 2012 Asia 5 Nations Champion after their 67-0 win over Hong Kong last weekend. This Saturday sees Kazakhstan in a do-or-die effort in Hong Kong to avoid relegation. UAE have a tough task against Korea in Seoul.

The CONSUR A tournament being played in Santiago, Chile, ends Saturday.

The all-Grecan test match in Paphos should see the Cypriots win although their place at the top of the ladder cannot be challenged.

Finland cannot avoid relegation no matter the result of their test against Bulgaria at home.

The 2015 Rugby World Cup qualification games continue. The NACRA zone qualification sees Cayman Islands at home to the Bahamas. The visitors enter this competition at the Round Two stage.
