RUGBY WORLD CUP

11.10.2015
Japan 28, United States 18 in Gloucester (World Cup, Pool B)
Argentina 64, Namibia 19 in Leicester (World Cup, Pool C)
Italy 32, Romania 22 in Exeter (World Cup, Pool D)
Ireland 24, France 9 in Cardiff (World Cup, Pool D)

Reviews
Ireland placed themselves at the top of Pool D after defeating France 24-9 in Cardiff. There concern though is for a trio of injured players who may not be fit enough to play in next weekends quarter final match against Argentina. Coach Schmidt may have to find four replacements for injured players Peter O'Mahony, Paul O'Connell and Jonathan Sexton.

France will rue their lost opportunities on attack and will face a real battle against old foes New Zealand next weekend.

In other results Italy eventually defeated Romania but not without the Eastern Europeans putting up a great fight. Argentina overwhelmed a tired Namibia whilst Japan finished their Rugby World Cup tournament with a win but not enough to secure a quarter final place.

RUGBY WORLD CUP: Sunday’s Fixtures 11 October

United States v Japan in Gloucester (World Cup, Pool B)
Argentina v Namibia in Leicester (World Cup, Pool C)
Italy v Romania in Exeter (World Cup, Pool D)
France v Ireland in Cardiff (World Cup, Pool D)

Briefly
The USA v Japan game is for pride only. Because Scotland defeated Samoa Japan did not reach the quarter finals. But they can be proud of their achievement in gaining automatic qualification to the 2019..hang on! They automatically qualified as they will be the host nation.

Pool C has also been sorted so the Argentina-Namibia game has no bearing.

The action is in Pool D. Ireland and France clash to see who tops this pool and has an easier ride to the semi-finals. Romania and Italy clash for third place. Romania will desperate to win this game, qualify for 2019 and push the claim that Romania and Georgia should be included into the 6 Nations tournament.

There is a lot to play for tomorrow.

Predictions
Japan to win by 14 points. Score 27-13
Argentina to win by 31 points. Score 42-11
Ireland to win by 8 points. Score 21-13
Italy to win by 9 points. Score 24-15

SAMOA 25, UNITED STATES 16: Rugby World Cup Pool B

20.09.2015

Review
Missed opportunities from Samoa (which prevented them from scoring more tries and gaining a crucial bonus point) and missed tackles and infringements by the USA were critical in the result of this fine game of rugby at Brighton.

Samoa’s next game is against the wounded Springbox but a win in Birmingham is a real possibility.

The USA would be disappointed with the result but have an opportunity to upset Scotland in 6 days time.

20.09.2015
Wales v Uruguay in Cardiff (World Cup, Pool A)
Samoa v United States at Brighton (World Cup, Pool B)

New Zealand begin this tournament with what will probably be their toughest match. Argentina believe they can cause another sensational upset.

Wales and Samoa are favoured to win their first pool matches.

PACIFIC NATIONS CUP: Finals Day

03.08.2015
Fiji 39, Samoa 29 in Vancouver (Pacific Nations Cup, Final)
Tonga 31, Japan 20 in Vancouver (Pacific Nations Cup, Playoff 3rd-4th)
United States 15, Canada 13 in Vancouver (Pacific Nations Cup, Playoff 5th-6th)

Briefly
Fiji finished strongly to defeat Samoa and recapture their dominance of Pacific rugby. Japan were defeated by Tonga and although this was not their strongest combination appear to have lost a little gloss to their game. The United States scored five penalty goals to sink Canada who slumped to last place in this competition. This was a huge disappointment for the host nation. They will be more than a little worried about their poor form leading up to the Rugby World Cup/

Pacific Nations Cup

Canada v Japan
I expect Canada to just brush past Japan although a Japanese win would not surprise. The Japanese, under former Australian coach Eddie Jones, has made considerable progress over the last two seasons.
Prediction: Canada by 3 points. Score 21-18

United States v Samoa
Samoa are fresh from their powerful display against New Zealand last week. The travel and that game may well have taken the sting out of this side. A win will depend on how they shape up. For the USA this is their first outing for the season. I’d expect them to be a bit rusty
Prediction: Samoa by 10 points. Score 29-19

African Test Rugby

Namibia v Russia
Namibia won the first test in Windhoek 39-19 last weekend against the visiting Russian side. This series is part of Namibia’s build up to the Rugby World Cup. I expect Russia to perform better this week.
Prediction: Namibia by 8 points. Score 25-17

Kenya v Spain
For me this is one of the matches of this weekend. These cross-continental rugby test matches are what makes the rugby rankings more meaningful and are a fantastic advertisement for this worldly game. Spain will struggle. They have left a large number of test regulars behind this being very much an experimental side. Kenya has defeated Portugal 41-15, Tunisia 46-15 but lost to Zimbabwe 20-28 in their three test matches so far. Spain last played a test match in March.
Prediction: Kenya by 18 points. Score 36-18

NACRA CARIBBEAN CUP 2015

All Games Played 07.03.2015

The Caribbean Cup is played for in two divisions. The top division, called the Championship, is played in two Zones; North and South. The second division is called The Cup and is also divided between north and south.

The two Championship winners play off for the final. The last placed side in each Championship zone has to play the winner of their respective Cup winning side.

In 2014 Mexico won by default against Bermuda to move to the Championship. Barbados defeated Curacao 29-0 to retain its place in the Championship. Guyana defeated USA South 30-27 in the final.

This will be Mexico’s biggest game to date. Mexico were promoted to the Championship level after Bermuda defaulted their promotion/relegation game last year. This will be a huge step up for the Mexicans.

Mexico caused a bit of a stir when they defeated USA South back in 2011 but lost heavily to the Panthers away back in 2013.

USA South will be champing at the bit following their surprise defeat at home to Guyana in last year’s Caribbean Championship final. Despite playing away and playing at altitude I expect they will just be able to do enough to record a win.

This will be a tough assignment for the visitors. They suffered at the hands of Mexico away last season. Mexico replaced Bermuda who were relegated to the Cup level. There was not a great deal between Mexico and Bermuda when they met last season.

Bermuda, on home soil, will be out to make the point that they should be at the Championship level. They are confident that for the first time in three years they have a full squad.

These two nations have never met before in a rugby test match.

Comments from Arthur Hogesteger (Curacao RFU). Edited

Our main players are Robert Perry, player coach and fly-half, Curtleyson Martis, winger and top try scorer for curacao. He will be the first player to reach 10 full international caps for Curacao, as rugby is only played since 2009. Veteren Marius van Noord will lead the pack, he is expected to dominate in the line-outs.There are two new caps with Eelco ten Molder on the flank as the rising star.

Our expectations is that the Cup Pool South will be tough this year. St Vincent brought in a coach from outside to build their team, and with St Lucia and BVI in a close game last weekend. We look forward to close and exiting games. We do hope to be able to play a promotion/relegation game versus either Barbados/Trinidad Tobago/Guyana in September 2015.

01.11.2014

New Zealand 74, United States 6 in Chicago
New Zealand Maoris 61, Japan 21 in Kobe

Malta 31, Croatia 26 in Valetta (ENC 2A)
Cyprus 30, Andorra 10 in Paphos (ENC 2B)
Bulgaria 26, Turkey 19 in Sofia (ENC 2D

Briefly
Australia defeated the UK Barbarians in a non-test game at Twickenham. It was a lively, open and exciting encounter, just what we expect from a Barbarians game.

New Zealand brought test rugby to the USA and won comfortably against the national side with a very ‘B’ team look. Mind you if you can bring Dan Carter on as a replacement..! The match certainly brought the best of test rugby to the USA. A sell-out crowd of 61,000 ( a record for test rugby in USA) was a great advertisement for the game there.

In ENC matches Czech Republic and Malta secured wins whilst Cyprus extended it’s world record consecutive test wins to 27 and announced their presence at this level. Turkey found that they still have a lot to learn in test rugby when they went down to Bulgaria in Sofia.

Sunday sees the Hungary-Latvia game being played.

USA v URUGUAY WCQ AMERICA’S PLAYOFF 2nd LEG

29.03.2014

Venue: Fifth Third Bank Stadium, Kennesaw, Atlanta, Georgia

Referee: Greg Garner (England)

Preview
The general feeling from media last weekend was that the USA should win comfortably against Uruguay in Montevideo. How wrong they all were including me. The USA put up one of it’s least memorably displays of rugby, especially in the first half. It is highly unlikely that they will put in such an ordinary display again but that doubt has certainly given Uruguay some hope of making the America’s No.2 World Cup Finals spot.

History is against Uruguay playing away especially in the USA. They have never won there. The scores are tied 0-0 on aggregate so a win by either side will see them into the World Cup Finals in 2015.
