TEST RUGBY RESULTS SATURDAY 1 NOVEMBER

01.11.2014
Australia 40, Barbarians (UK) RFC 36 at Twickenham (Non Test)
New Zealand 74, United States 6 in Chicago
New Zealand Maoris 61, Japan 21 in Kobe
Czech Republic 27,Switzerland 14 in Switzerland (ENC 2A)
Malta 31, Croatia 26 in Valetta (ENC 2A)
Cyprus 30, Andorra 10 in Paphos (ENC 2B)
Bulgaria 26, Turkey 19 in Sofia (ENC 2D

Briefly
Australia defeated the UK Barbarians in a non-test game at Twickenham. It was a lively, open and exciting encounter, just what we expect from a Barbarians game.

New Zealand brought test rugby to the USA and won comfortably against the national side with a very ‘B’ team look. Mind you if you can bring Dan Carter on as a replacement..! The match certainly brought the best of test rugby to the USA. A sell-out crowd of 61,000 ( a record for test rugby in USA) was a great advertisement for the game there.

In ENC matches Czech Republic and Malta secured wins whilst Cyprus extended it’s world record consecutive test wins to 27 and announced their presence at this level. Turkey found that they still have a lot to learn in test rugby when they went down to Bulgaria in Sofia.

Sunday sees the Hungary-Latvia game being played.

BRITISH AND IRISH LIONS v BARBARIANS (UK) RFC

01.06.2013

Venue: Hong Kong Stadium, Hong Kong

Referee: Steve Walsh (Australia)

Preview
The much awaiting British and Irish Lions tour to Australia kicks off in Hong Kong with a non-test match against the UK Barbarians RFC.

Injuries and players still playing for domestic clubs in UK has forced Gatland to play some talent that might otherwise be regarded as the ‘B’ team. So the opportunities are there for fringe players to shine.

Prediction: Lions by 8 points

TEST RUGBY THIS WEEKEND: Saturday/Sunday 1-2 June

01.06.2013
Barbarians (UK) RFC v British and Irish Lions in Hong Kong (Non-test)
Fiji v Japan in Lautoka (Pacific Nations Cup)
Poland v Sweden in Stockholm (WCQ Europe R4; ENC 1B)
Guyana v Trinidad Tobago in Port of Spain (NACRA Carib. Champ; South R2)Cayman Islands v Bermuda in Grand Cayman (NACRA Carib. Champ, North R2)

02.06.2013
England XV v CONSUR XV in Montevideo

Briefly
Welcome June. This is probably the biggest window of international test rugby on the calendar for 2013. It also coincides with one of my busiest times of the year as a school teacher. Therefor my coverage will not be full but hopefully I can concentrate on the keys matches.

This weekend sees the much awaited British and Irish Lions tour down under kick off with a game against the Barbarians in Hong Kong.

Another tour to begin is England in South America. Before the two tests against Argentina England, without it’s Lions of course, will play a CONSUR Select side in Montevideo.

Fiji and Japan clash in Lautoka as the Pacific Nations Cup continues whilst Poland and Sweden play one of the last games in Europe for the European Nations Cup and World Cup qualifying. The result doesn't matter as the playoff position have been decided.

Finally the last round matches for the 2103 NACRA Caribbean Championship will be played. The result of the Caymans v Bermuda game is of no significance as USA South has already snappled the North place. However the Guyana-Trinidad Tobago game will decide the South winner.

TEST RUGBY: Wales Take on Barbarians

02.06.2012
Barbarians (UK)RFC v Wales in Cardiff

Venue: Millennium Stadium

Referee: Alain Rolland (Ireland)

Preview
Wales has paid a high honour to the Barbarians Rugby Club by awarding its players a test cap for this match. It is a rather strange move as neither England (last Saturday) nor Ireland (Tuesday) awarded test caps for their games against the famous club. What is more, this Welsh side bares little resemblance to that that defeated France in March taking the Six Nations Championship and Grand Slam.

What is perhaps more important is that Wales will say farewell to one of its own and possibly another. Shane Williams will bow out of all rugby with his appearance for the Barbarians. It could also be Martyn William’s final test for Wales if he comes off the bench. It would be his 100th test for Wales if he does.

As far as the actual games goes it is expected to be a typical Barbarians match with free flowing back moves and open play. Well, hopefully.

A number of the Barbarians team has been drafted in due to injuries so combinations will be awkward and sluggish at best so I’m expecting Wales to win comfortably.

Prediction: Wales by 25 points

26.05.2012
Korea 47, United Arab Emirates 21 in Seoul (Asia 5 Nations)

Bulgaria 26, Finland 24 in Turku (ENC 2D)
Cayman Islands 27, Bahamas 7 in Grand Cayman (WCA Americas; NACRA North R2)

Briefly
A very busy weekend with other commitments meant that I could not cover any test rugby.

The Barbarians RFC began their 3 match programme with a loss to England. They play Ireland tomorrow (Tuesday) and Wales on Saturday.

Kazakhstan are relegated to Division1 for 2013. They will need to win that Division next year in order to be in qualification for a place at the 2015 Rugby World Cup.

Hong Kong and Korea finished their Asia Five Nations programme with good wins.

Argentina held their place at the top of the CONSUR table. Fielding basically their home-based team they were comfortable winners over Chile.

Brazil played well to hold Uruguay 15-20 until the Uruguayans scored a last minute try. A Brave display by the ever improving Brazilians.

Croatia held their place in ENC 2A for 2012-14 with a convincing win away.

Cyprus finished top of their Division 2D table with another crushing victory, this time over Greece. Also in 2D Bulgaria ended any hopes Finland had of staying in ENC 2D with a close win away.

The Cayman Islands continued on their winning way, defeating the Bahamas at home.

INTERNATIONAL RUGBY MATCH: Barbarians Face Wallabies

26.11.2011
Australia v Barbarians (UK) RFC at Twickenham (Non test)

Referee: Romain Poite (France)

Preview
Australia is the only international rugby team present at the 2011 Rugby World Cup to venture north this northern autumn.

The Australians will play a test match against Wales next weekend but first they face the Barbarians at Twickenham.

Whenever I think of Barbarians rugby I always, probably along with 99% of you, think of the famous game in 1973 against New Zealand and THAT try by Gareth Edwards. But I also spare a thought for an even more emotional game against New Zealand in 1964 and Wilson Whineray’s equally famous try.

Apparently the game will be played for the Killik Cup. Silly me. I have always associated Barbarian matches as friendly affairs. So with a bit of research I came up with this bit of information.

‘Sophie Morris, Director of Marketing at Killik & Co, commented: “Killik & Co has been Associate Match Sponsor of Barbarian games held at Twickenham since they played New Zealand in December 2009. It is a relationship that we are very pleased with and are delighted to extend our association with the prestigious club through title sponsorship of this game.” ‘
http://www.sponsorship-awards.co.uk/news/killik-co-sponsorsship-barbarian-v-australia-line-twickenham

Former New Zealand coach, and guider of that team to the 2011 Rugby World Cup, Graham Henry has the honour of coaching the Barbarians side. This fittingly means he will lock horns with his Kiwi rival and now head coach of Australia Robbie Deans

The Barbarian selection throws up some interesting characters. Mortlock, Matfield, Shaw, Stringer, Marconnet and White could well be bidding farewell to the international rugby scene whilst Tomkins has apparently been ‘borrowed’ from the rugby league code for this match.

The Australians have a sprinkling of players on the fringe of test rugby and possibly resting players ahead of the big clash against Wales next weekend.

Prediction: Hmmm. Australia to be more cohesive and win by 7 points.

TEST RUGBY RESULTS: Saturday 4 June

04.06.2011
Barbarians (UK) RFC 31, Wales 28 in Cardiff (Wales 130th Anniv.; Test match)
England Saxons 87, United States 8 in Northampton (Churchill Cup, Pool A)-Non test
Canada 26, Italy ‘A’ 12 in Northampton (Churchill Cup Pool B)-Non test
Hungary 21, Norway 5 in Budapest (ENC 2C)
Korea 58, Singapore 19 in Ansan (Asia Nations Div.1, Final)
Philippines 86, Malaysia 20 in Ansan (Asia Nations Div.1, Playoff 3rd-4th)

Briefly
It was not a happy day for Wales. The Barbarians ruined their celebration party by scoring a try in the last move of the match to win. After the match Wales named a 45 man squad to prepare for the 2011 Rugby World Cup.

The England Saxons walked all over the USA in the first rugby international of the 2011 Churchill Cup. A worrying result for coach Sullivan. Even given that it was not the USA’s strongest lineup, this was a case of you are only as good as your second best players. It was not a good look!

Canada showed every intention of being a difficult team to bundle out of the 2011 Rugby World Cup. Italy ‘A’ was a handy side but their chances slumped in the second half with a player yellow-carded. Never the less, it was still a good win which backed up the Canadians second placing in last year’s Churchill Cup and their good results on the November 2010 European tour.

AUSTRIA 4 2 0 2 65 67 -2 0 1 9
NORWAY 4 0 1 3 31 65 -34 0 1 3

Hungary eased itself into the middle of the Division 2C points table with a good 21-5 win over the visiting Norwegians. The Hungarians are now within striking range of the competition leaders going into the second round of the competition. Norway, on the other hand, are firmly placed at the bottom of the table and will need to do something magical next season to avoid relegation.

In the Asia Nations Division 1 tournament all hell broke loose. The Koreans squashed Singapore to elevate themselves back into the top division of Asian rugby, whilst Malaysia slumped to another defeat, this time heavily to Philippines. The Philippines remain in Division 1 whilst Malaysia is relegated to Division 2. Questions will need answering as to why this Malaysian squad was not its strongest; a number of players from the leading club side COBRAS being unavailable, and the lack of impact the imported club players from New South Wales making little difference. We shall see.

INTERNATIONAL TEST RUGBY: Wales v Barbarians

04.06.2011
Barbarians (UK) RFC v Wales in Cardiff

Venue: Millennium Stadium

Referee: Alain Rolland (Ireland)

Preview
The famous Barbarians RFC regularly plays internationals against Six Nation teams. Usually they are not matches in which test caps are awarded. For this match an exception has been made. The match is in honour of the 130th anniversary of the first rugby test match played by Wales. For the occasion, Wales will award test caps.

Gavin Henson, once the wonder boy of Wales, returns to the test side for the first time since 2009. Without a club affiliation this is virtually his last chance to force his way into Rugby World Cup considerations.

The Barbarians selection takes in players from no less than ten nations, from New Zealand to Norway, and for the first time, a player from Georgia

Prediction: Wales by 7 points

International Rugby: Barbarians Take on the All Blacks

05.12.2009
New Zealand v Barbarians (UK) RFC at Twickenham (Non test)

Referee: Christophe Berdos (France)

Preview
Although not a test match, the All Blacks usually take this match as seriously. It always comes at the end of a northern tour or more often the not the New Zealander's find themselves undefeated. Open rugby yes. A defeat-No! Certainly in the past the Barbarian team has taken on a British and Irish Lions look and it has, sometimes, been a battle to the death. Well that's not what, traditionally , it is supposed to be.

Back in 1948 the touring Australian rugby team were a bit short of the readies and their French and North American legs of their northern tour was in some doubt. A match was arranged against the Barbarians as a fund raiser for the Aussies. The Barbarians won 9-6 and a traditional fixture against touring teams was established.

There has been famous games. The 1963-64 All Blacks played open rugby to defeat the club 36-3, with captain Wilson Whineray selling an outrageous dummy to score the last try.

In 1973 the All Blacks were again involved in a match against the Barbarians and again the match was a cracker. Phil Bennett started a movement well inside his 22, he jinked, he side stepped the end result being many hands played the ball until Gareth Edwards scored a magnificent try in the corner.

All who attend such matches by the Barbarian club at Twickenham fully expect a match played traditionally, with open rugby, plenty of passing and a game played in the best of spirits. It hasn't always been that way. Lets hope this game will.

For New Zealand its the last match of their year. They will play their 'second' team which I think is a pity. Why not play more of your top layers and give the Twickers crowd a thrill. I would argue that a Tuesday game against say the England Counties amateur side at say Bath would have been more fitting for the 'second' team and keep the top guys for this fixture. The All Blacks will still want to remain undefeated on this tour.

The Barbarians may have more name players but the Kiwis have a better team combination. This will tell in the end.

Prediction: New Zealand by 16 points
