RUGBY WORLD CUP: Results Saturday 10 October

Australia 15, Wales 6 at Twickenham (World Cup, Pool A)
England 60, Uruguay 3 in Manchester (World Cup, Pool A)
Scotland 36, Samoa 33 in Newcastle (World Cup, Pool B)

Briefly
Australia put on a stunning ten minute display of defence against Wales in the second half. Reduced to 13 players they held out a great effort by Wales to score in a thrilling encounter. The score was 12-6 to Australia. A Welsh try with the conversion would have put them in the lead. But Wales could not breach the defence. Stand up tall Australia and be proud. Yet another amazing game at this tournament.

Probably the best game of rugby at the tournament to date saw Scotland just edge out Samoa 36-33. What a game! Running rugby at its best. Whew!!

England defeated Uruguay 60-3. That was that!

After today’s results the quarter finals look like this.

Australia v Scotland
Wales v South Africa
New Zealand v Ireland or France
Ireland or France v Argentina

The quarter finals will take place next Saturday and Sunday

RUGBY WORLD CUP: Saturday’s Games

Due to other commitments previews have to be brief.

10.10.2015
Australia v Wales at Twickenham (World Cup, Pool A)

This is a crucial game in Pool A. The winner will take top spot and will play either Scotland or Japan in the quarter finals. The loser will have the much harder game against South Africa.

Prediction: Wales by 5 points. Score 26-21

England v Uruguay in Manchester (World Cup, Pool A)

Nothing much to write about this one. England are out of the tournament and will want to appease their fans with a huge win which they are capable of doing. Uruguay will be going home without a win and having to re qualify for the 2019 tournament.

Prediction: England by 73 points. Score 81-8

Samoa v Scotland in Newcastle (World Cup, Pool B)

Samoa has been a huge disappointment at this tournament. They will put up a good fight in the first half but I expect Scotland to be too strong in the second.

Prediction: Scotland by 13 points. Score 24-11

RUGBY WORLD CUP: Results 6 October

06.10.2015
Fiji 47, Uruguay 15 in Milton Keynes (World Cup, Pool A)
Romania 17, Canada 15 in Leicester (World Cup, Pool D)

Briefly
Fiji unleased their free flowing rugby against Uruguay to score a decisive victory. Meanwhile Romania came from 0-15 down to just overhaul the Canadians to register their first win in this Rugby World Cup.

Australia 65, Uruguay 3 in Birmingham (World Cup, Pool A)
Scotland 39, United States 16 in Leeds (World Cup, Pool B)

Briefly
Australia, Scotland and Ireland all got through their pool matches last night predictably with bonus points.

The next match is on Tuesday, Tonga v Namibia.

My next preview will be on Wednesday as I will be away.

WALES 54, URUGUAY 9: World Cup Pool A

20.09.2015
Wales 54, Uruguay 9 in Cardiff (World Cup, Pool A)

Review
Wales were too strong for Uruguay on their home turf and notched up a satisfactory 54-9 win. Their injury worries continued as Liam Williams, Paul James, Cory Allen and prop Samson Lee were all replaced during the game because of injuries. Prior to the tournament Leigh Halfpenny, Rhys Webb and Eli Walker withdrew from the team because of injuries.

It wasn’t a convincing performance but it was a good win. Uruguay were spirited in play, defended well early on and never gave up.

Wale’s next game is the big class against England at Twickenham this weekend whilst Uruguay face an even bigger opponent when the face Australia (and later England !) in 6 days time.

Wales was just too much for Uruguay to handle

20.09.2015
Wales v Uruguay in Cardiff (World Cup, Pool A)
Samoa v United States at Brighton (World Cup, Pool B)

TEST RUGBY RESULT; 1 August

01.08.2015
Uruguay 30, Argentina XV 26 in Montevideo (World Cup Warm up)

Briefly
It may not have been Argentina’s first team (That team is in South Africa preparing for the Rugby Championship test against South Africa this Saturday) but a number of the Argentine side would have the opportunity to stake a claim for inclusion into the World Cup Puma’s side. They were in for a big shock!

Uruguay were playing their last test in front of their home crowd before they venture off the prepare for the Rugby World Cup. And play their hearts out they did. They inflicted a first ever defeat of an Argentinean side by another South American side.

TBILISI CUP: Final Day

21.06.2015
Emerging Ireland 45, Georgia 12 in Tbilisi (Tbilisi Cup)
Emerging Italy 23, Uruguay 13 in Tbilisi (Tbilisi Cup)

Briefly
The Emerging sides dominated the last day. Georgia’s performance, like that of Namibia’s in the parallel Nations Cup, was cause for some concern despite the fact that it was nowhere near their top squad.

16.05.2015

Argentina, holder of the CONSUR Cup, has two challengers this year. Uruguay finished 1st and Paraguay 2nd in last years CONSUR A so they have the right to challenge Argentina.

Argentina are not fielding any of their overseas professionals in these challenge matches. In fact the team that takes on Paraguay in Asuncion next weekend will be completely different to the one that was fielded today. And , it is reported, a third squad will take on the Fiji Warriors, their ‘A’ team. in two weeks time.

URUGUAY v PARAGUAY CONSUR A

Venue: Estadio Charrúa, Montevideo

Referee: Henrique Platais (Brasil);

Uruguay se enfrenta a Paraguay

Image thanks to http://uru.org.uy

Preview
Uruguay has a huge advantage over their neighbours Paraguay. They have a greater exposure in world rugby. They have qualified for the Rugby World Cup Finals later in the year, get invited annually to European competitions and have a healthy cross-border relationship with Argentina. Urugauy has already been active with their "Charrúas XV", playing in Argentina.

By contrast Paraguay plays in the annual CONSUR competitions. That’s it!

On that basis there should be daylight between these two teams. Paraguay surprise all last year by cutting Chile out of the ‘Big 3’ CONSUR Cup contest.
Uruguay will not field their strongest side however I can’t see the Paraguayans getting close.Uruguay has a huge home advantage.

Last Five Encounters

25.04.2009 Uruguay 85-7 in Montevideo (CONSUR A Preliminary)

The Caribbean Championship and Cup competitions continue. Mexico and Cayman Islands will be virtually playing for the North title, the winner facing the South winner. That will be either Guyana or Trinidad Tobago who also play this weekend. The surprise is the USA South is already out of the competition and will in fact have to face the Cup North winner in a promotion-relegation match later.
