TEST RUGBY: Scotland in Argentina

19.06.2010
Scotland v Argentina in Mar del Plata

Venue: Estadio Jose Maria Minella

Referee: Christophe Berdos (France)

Preview
There has been a series of see-saw results between these two nations in the last two years. Last weekend Scotland won by being able to contain Argentina up front, penetrate through their backs and milk the flow of penalties as Argentina took an undisciplined approach to the game. The question will be can Argentina correct their errors and prevent a rare home series loss, and a first-time ever Scottish series win overseas.

TEST RUGBY TOURNAMENT: Africa Cup

The Africa Cup is Africa's major tier 1 15's rugby tournament. 12 teams are involved at this level, divided into 3 pools

Pool A-Morocco, Tunisia, Ivory Coast and Senegal
Pool B-Namibia, Uganda, Cameroun and Zambia
Pool C-Kenya, Madagascar, Zimbabwe and Botswana

The winner of each pool plus the best second-placed team will compete in the finals to be held in November, venue to be determined.

Pool A Final
Morocco v Tunisia in Tunis

25[1] 77[1]

Preview
Morocco created a mild sensation with an emphatic 60-3 crushing of Ivory Coastmid week. The Ivory Coast team has gradually been building strength with a healthy smattering of France-based players but during the week Morocco systematically took the team apart. Morocco were bundled out of Rugby World Cup finals contention last year but appear to be bouncing back.

Morocco also has a healthy rugby player base in France. They will pose a serious threat to Tunisia.

The Tunisians will be warming up for their upcoming struggles with Romania in the World Cup Repechage playoffs. They were less than impressive with their 12-11 win over Senegal mid-week.

Last Five Encounters
23.04.2005 Morocco 10-3 in Tunis (CAR Div.1, Pool C)
24.04.2004 Morocco 17-7 in Casablanca (CAR Div.1, Pool A)
18.05.2002 Tunisia 27-26 in Tunis (WCQ Africa R3, North: CAR North 1)
19.05.2001 Morocco 30-3 in Casablanca (Africa Championship, North)
17.03.2001 Morocco 17-14 in Tunis (Africa Championship, North)

It has been a while since these two North African teams met. Morocco has an historical advantage.

GWC Rugby Rankings
Africa Table-Tunisia 3rd, Morocco 4th
IRB Ranking Points-Tunisia 54.20, Morocco 53.05

Prediction-Morocco looks to have the form. Morocco by 5 points

Pool A Playoff
Ivory Coast v Senegal

Preview
Senegal gave the Tunisians a mother of a fright mid week whilst Ivory Coast fell apart against Morocco. On form Senegal would be favourites to win this playoff.

Previous Encounters
26.05.2007 Ivory Coast 12-10 in Dakar (Africa Cup, Div.1, North B)
09.07.2005 Ivory Coast 20-6 in Dakar (WCQ Africa Rnd 1B, Pool A)
1983 Ivory Coast 25-0 in Abidijan
1977 Ivory Coast 15-9 in Dakar

GWC Rugby Rankings
Africa Table- Ivory Coast 7th, Senegal 8th
IRB Ranking Points-Ivory Coast 50.31, Senegal 42.12

Prediction: The rankings would give it to Ivory Coast, but on form I have to go with Senegal to cause a bit of an upset, and win this by 5 points.

TEST MATCH: Victoria Cup

The Victoria cup is in its first year of competition, being the newest competition in African rugby. Uganda, Zimbabwe and Kenya compete for this Cup in a similar format to that of the Tri Nations.

Zimbabwe lost by 1 point to Kenya in Nairobi last Saturday. Today they play their second game away.

Zimbabwe v Uganda in Kampala (Victoria Cup)

Preview
'...word has trickled in that the Sables Team Manager Nody Kanyangarara slapped the Ugandan liaison officer Chris Lubanga who is reported to have opened a case of assault at the Kira road police station. As Uganda prepares to battle Zimbabwe on the rugby pitch the visitors seem to have thrown the first punch albeit below the belt with a potential diplomatic row in the offing.Saturday's match will surely be interesting.'

Zimbabwe dropped their first game in this tournament against Kenya. They will have a difficult task to pull a win out of Kamapala. Uganda hs a very experienced team including winger Allan Musoke, brought out of retirement.

TEST RUGBY: Italians Have Hard Task in South Africa

19.06.2010
Italy v South Africa in Witbank

Venue: Puma Stadium

Referee: Andrew Small (England)

Preview
International test rugby arrives in this provincial capital for the first time. With South Africa awash with the happenings over the oval ball game, and the South Africa RU evacuating their main stadiums, South Africa rugby has taken this, and the next test, to provincial capitals.

South Africa has been in great form so far in 2010. After an average Northern tour last November they came back with a good win over Wales and then, last weekend, an excellent victory over the French. Even with 11 changes in the side from last weekend, South Africa should continue this winning run. It bodes well for their chances at the Rugby World Cup in 2011 when a team can win with many changes in the lineups.

Italy has their forward pack. It will take a huge South African effort to overcome what is probably the world's best scrummaging unit. Even at the breakdown Italy has the return of their world class No.8 and captain Parisse. It will be in the backs where Italy will struggle and their defensive systems will be tested by a bigger, more mobile South African backline.

TEST RUGBY: Poms out for Revenge

19.06.2010
England v Australia in Sydney (Cook Cup)

Venue: ANZ Stadium

Referee: Romain Poite (France)

Preview
England's coach Martin Johnson will want to reestablish England's place in the rugby world by winning here in Sydney as he did as captain of the 2007 side that defeated Australia on this ground. More alarmingly though will be England's record against Southern hemisphere sides since 2007-10 straight losses!

A new-look Aussie side handed England a lesson on playing with spirit and flare when faced with a daunting forward mauling last weekend. Robbie dean's is molding this Australian team into a spirited and inventive side that may well take the New Zealanders and South African's by surprise in the Tri Nations this year.

What can England do? They will dominate up front in the set pieces for sure. But I suspect Australia will have an edge elsewhere on the park. The English will again miss Jonny Wilkinson's generalship and defence qualities as he sits on the bench again. He is not in his best form yes but there looked to be nobody else who can direct play like he can. Big mistake England!

Jonny Wilkinson will not be in the starting lineup. Is this a mistake?

INTERNATIONAL TEST RUGBY: Wales Arrive in New Zealand

19.06.2010
Wales v New Zealand in Dunedin

Venue: Carisbrook

Referee: George Clancy (Ireland)

Preview
It is with great sadness that this will be the last test match played at this famous rugby ground in New Zealand. Nicknamed 'The House of Pain', it has been the downfall of many touring rugby sides. It's closeness to the parochial and noisy crowd has always given the All Blacks a 5 point lead even before kickoff!. It will be no more. A new stadium, New Zealand's first with a roof, is being built across town but surprisingly with only a 30,000 capacity.

300px-Carisbrook[1]
Farewell to Carisbrook. Image thanks to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carisbrook

To this game. Wales will be but a shadow of the side that pushed the All Blacks last November. Injuries has meant a new-look side will tackle an All Black side coming off a 40 point win over Ireland.

The Kiwis are also blooding new players but this did not lessen the pace nor lower the skills this side possesses. A hard day at the office for Wales

Tunisia 12, Senegal 11

The huge win to Morocco was a surprise as Ivory Coast has been tough competition in the past (and made the 1995 Rugby World Cup). Even more alarming was Tunisia's close call with Senegal. Senegal has made grant strides in their rugby development.

INTERNATIONAL TEST RUGBY: IRB Nations Cup

Results in from Bucharest

15.06.2010
Italy A 21, Georgia 3
Namibia 23, Scotland 20
Romania 24, Argentina A 8

Points After Round 2

'So we are confronted by the weird situation of the possiblity that a team will win all its games, but still finish second - a reflection of the crazy format that the IRB persist with.
1. Italy A: 8 (+20)
2. Namibia: 8 (+7)
3. Romania: 5 (+12)
4. Georgia: 4 (-17)
5. Scotland A: 2 (-4)
6. Argentina A: 1 (-18)'

And the scenario..

Round 3 Sunday

Georgia v Namibia
Italy A v Romania
Argentina A v Scotland A

'So to win the tournament:
Italy A: Must win over Romania, which you'd think would be enough considering their high point difference. Bonus point win would almost guarantee the trophy.
Namibia: Must either thrash Georgia, or hope that Romania cause Italy A problems, or both. Realistically, this will be a very tight encounter and a narrow win is probably all that Namibia could get out of this - so they need Italy A to slip up.
Romania: Must beat Italy A by five points or more to finish above them. Also, they will need Georgia to beat Namibia, but not thrash them. A bonus point win would be golden for Romania.
Georgia: Must beat Namibia by scoring four tries by eight points or more. Realistically, they need to win this by 30 points or more and hope that Romania only narrowly beat Italy A. They need and absolute miracle.'

TEST RUGBY: IRB Nations Cup, Day 2

IRB Nations Cup-Bucharest
Italy A v Georgia
Scotland A v Namibia
Romania v Argentina A

Previews
After a first day of upsets, the second day of this tournament will see some interesting contests.

Italy A v Georgia

Both Italy A and Georgia won on the first day. Italy A defeated the much fancied Argentina Jaguars whilst Georgia defeated last year's tournament winner Scotland A. There will not be a lot between these two teams but I suspect Italy A has the edge.

Prediction: Italy A by 3 points

Scotland A v Namibia

Namibia caused a major upset on day 1 by defeating hosts Romania. They could one step further against a Scottish side reeling from a one point loss on day 1.

Prediction: Namibia by 5 points

Romania v Argentina A

This could be the cracker of a match on the day. Both side were on the favourites lists before the tournament started, whilst today one of these teams will, unless there is a draw, have suffered two defeats. I suspect Argentina A will just edge out the home side.

Prediction: Argentina A by 1 point

RUGBY MATCHES MISSING!

Due to a glitch in the computer works and family commitments this weekend, there may be some matches I cannot cover. What games I have covered will not have the usual team stats available, due to the glitch and lack of time.

It can take an average of an hour to put together each game you see, so with twelve games on Saturday alone (5 more on Sunday) every moment counts. When other commitments turn up or a glitch happens with the computer, something has to give. I love doing this, don't misunderstand me, but I'm not getting any income from the blog nor the associated web site, so it has to drop when other priorities occur. I hope you understand.

Now the time is coming when I will have to consider whether to make these a membership only blog and web site. Let me know if you would support that idea, or not. Let me also know what you would be prepared to pay, say monthly, yearly, or for life. Those are the sort of options I'm looking at.

Rugby never sleeps around the world.

RUGBY TOURNAMENT: Asia Nations Division 4, Finals Day

Asia Nations Division 4 finals in Almaty

12.06.2010
Jordan v Uzbekistan
Mongolia v Almaty Selects XV (I think this match will happen)

Preview
Kygyzstan's no show at this event is understandable. Civil unrest continues to plague this Central Asian nation. Originally down to host this tournament the Kygzstani's pulled out of this commitment. At the last minute the tournament went to neighbour Kazakhstan, and then the Kyzygy team itself pulled out of the tournament. This is, of course, a major blow to the rugby development of this emerging nation, and I do hope life gets back to normal there as soon as possible.

The final showdown will be between Jordan, who won their first ever international test rugby match Wednesday, against Mongolia, and Uzbekistan who had little more than a training run against a local team on the same day. The prize is that the winner goes to Division 3 next year.

These two teams have not played each other before.

GWC Rugby Rankings
Asia Table-Uzbekistan 21st, Jordan 23rd
IRB Rankings-These guys do not register yet.

Prediction: I think the Uzbekistanis will just have too much experience and grunt up front, to win by 14 points.

RUGBY TEST MATCH: England Against Australia

12.06.2010
England v Australia in Perth

Venue: Subiaco Oval

Referee: Nigel Owens (Wales)

Preview
Whilst not quite reaching the intensity of the Ashes cricket series between these two nations, a rugby test match still brings out a bit of the colonial boys v the home country feelings. Both teams certainly have a lot to prove.

Robbie Deans, the Aussie coach, is having to rapidly build this young side into a World Cup finals contender. They have a little over a year to get it right and there are promising signs. Injuries has certainly made Deans' job difficult and the retirement of world-class flanker Smith has left the team vulnerable in the loose play. In fact only Elsom remains from the starting 15 who played England last November. Veteran Nathan Sharp is back, thankfully, to give the Australian pack much needed experience. Still, the opportunity is there for younger players to make their mark in this game and to force their way into the Australian side next year.

England, frankly, are playing poorly and have done so, well, since the 2003 Rugby World Cup. Their huge and experienced forward pack would have few equals in the world. This pack has been largely kept together for this tour. This is an area in which England should dominate. But those backs! For the money that is behind this England team, and with players like Wilkinson, the flare and the skill are frankly just missing. I have found watching England play just boring! Step up England and produce!

Last Five Encounters
07.11.2009 Australia 18-9 at Twickenham (Cook Cup)
15.11.2008 Australia 28-14 at Twickenham (Cook Cup)
06.10.2007 England 12-10 at Marseilles (World Cup, Quarter-final)
17.06.2006 Australia 43-18 in Melbourne (Cook Cup)
11.06.2006 Australia 34-3 in Sydney (Cook Cup)

Australia hold the Cook Cup, symbol of rivalry between these two nations. They have held it since June 2006. This is the first time England has played a test match in Perth.

GWC Rugby Rankings
World Table-England 6th, Australia 8th
IRB Rankings-Australia 3rd (85.56), England 7th (80.10)

Prediction: It won't be pretty, but England to grunt it by 3
