Test Rugby: Tri Nations, New Zealand v South Africa

01.08.2009
New Zealand v South Africa in Durban (Tri Nations)

Venue: ABSA Stadium

Preview
New Zealand has an uphill battle to come up with a win in South Africa. There is much uncertainty and a lack of confidence about this All Black side. This was evident last weekend.

South Africa are a very strong forward outfit and have a massive defensive line. If the Kiwis can match the South Africa forwards and then let their backs loose, an All Black win could be on the way.

Test Rugby: South Africa Too Good

25.07.2009
South Africa 28, New Zealand 19 at Bloemfontein (Tri Nations)

Review
South Africa placed itself firmly at the top of the Tri Nations competition with this tough win against the Kiwis. New Zealand were never allowed to get into the game after, yet again, a slow start in which South Africa led 17-3 at one stage.

Tri Nations Rugby: New Zealand v South Africa

25.07.2009
New Zealand v South Africa in Bloemfontein (Tri Nations)

Preview
New Zealand has had to travel extensively since their test against Australia last weekend. They will be tired after that test and even more tired after their journey. This will count against them.

South Africa meanwhile has had time to freshen up after their three battles against the Lions. They are a very strong forward unit, possibly the strongest in the world. Their backline is more pedestrian than the All Blacks but they work well behind that dominant pack. But the question is how much depth is their in their squad. Remember the third test against the Lions?

There is very little between these two teams on paper. The difference will be how these teams play to their strengths. Last week we saw the All Black forwards dominant so it will be a huge battle up front.

Last Five Encounters
16.08.2008 New Zealand 19-0 in Capetown (Tri Nations)
12.07.2008 South Africa 30-28 in Dunedin (Tri Nations)
05.07.2008 New Zealand 19-8 in Wellington (Tri Nations)
14.07.2007 New Zealand 32-6 in Christchurch (Tri Nations)
23.06.2007 New Zealand 26-21 in Durban (Tri Nations)

New Zealand has certainly been dominant on the scoreboard. New Zealand hasn't lost two in a row against South Africa since 2004.

GWC Rugby Rankings: World Table-New Zealand 1st, South Africa 4th

Prediction: These two teams haven't drawn a test match since 1994, an I haven't predicted a draw in any test match for some time, so I'll do it right now.

Botswana v Zimbabwe

Preview
The Zimbabwe-Botswana game looks to be the final of this tournament. Both go into this game undefeated and there appears to be nothing much between them.

Zimbabwe, without a few of its top players, caused an upset on day by downing the 'Makas' 31-22. They were a little shakey mid-week with a close 14-8 win over Mauritius.

Botswana, playing at their home ground at the University of Botswana, has surprised most with their record so far. They were convincing 16-10 winners over Zambia, whilst they won comfortably 39-17 over Reunion mid-week.

Previous Encounter
Botswana played its first international rugby test match in 1996. On that day there were hammered 130-10 by Zimbabwe in Bulawayo. These two teams have not met since!

Preview
Madagascar should win this game but they will be ruing their loss to Zimbabwe on day 1.

These two teams first met back in 1995. My records show a 33-9 win to Reunion on that day. Since then Madagascar has been on a much higher African rugby stage. I expect Madagascar to win easily.

Mauritius v Zambia

Preview
It's not been a happy tournament for Zambia. They surprisingly lost to hosts Botswana 10-16 on day 1 and then found a tough Madagascan side too strong mid-week.

Mauritius defeated their island neighbour Reunion 10-9 on day 1, and then pushed Zimbabawe 8-14 mid-week for a very respectable record.

There may not be much between these two teams who have never met before.

Test Rugby This Weekend 25 July

25.07.2009
New Zealand v South Africa in Bloemfontein (Tri Nations)
Madagascar v Reunion in Gaborone (CAR Dev.Trophy, South)
Mauritius v Zambia in Gaborone (CAR Dev.Trophy, South)
Botswana v Zimbabwe in Gaborone (CAR Dev.Trophy, South)

Briefly
New Zealand head for Bloemfontein for their next big Tri Nations clash. New Zealand's best performance of the season so far was the second half against Australia last weekend. Can they produce that against South Africa? How determined will the Sprinbox be after that embarrasing third test loss against the Lions? I expect the South Africans to come out of the sheds ready to rip Kiwis apart!

Zimbabwe and Botswana are undefeated after two rounds of the CAR Development Trophy held in the Botswanan capital Gaborone. There clash will be huge! Don't dismiss Madagascar. My friends at FIRA-AER forum reckon they could still win if they defeat Reunion by 23 points or more and if Botswana and Zimbabwe draw. Ahhh! It's too complicated for me! Give me a straight final any day!!

Rugby In Africa

CAR Development Trophy, South.
Just last weekend we saw the conclusion of the corresponding tournament in the north, which was held in Togo, a tiny republic in West Africa.

The Development trophy is for emerging nations one level below CAR Trophy, which was also played recently. The nations at the trophy level are Morocco (the winner), Kenya, Senegal and Cameroun.

The southern tournament was hit last week with two defections. Both Tanzania and Swaziland pulled out. This left Botswana (hosts), Zimbabwe, Madagascar, Zambia and the Indian Ocean islands of Mauritius and Reunion. Because it is an overseas department of France, Reunion has permission to play as a nation, but is not eligible for World Cup qualifying games.

With the late withdrawls, organisers rearranged the touranment into two pools, with teams only playing across the pools, exactly like the recent IRB Nations tournament held in Bucharest.

The tournament is being held at the University of Botswana Rugby grounds in the capital Gaborone.

Day One
20.07.2009
Zimbabwe 31, Madagascar 22
Botswana 16, Zambia 10
Mauritius 10, Reunion 9

Review
Two upsets were recorded in the first round. Madagascar were well fancied as the tournament favourite. On the day they found the Zimbabweans too strong.

Botswana caused the other upset by downing Zambia who are ranked higher. In the other match Mauritius just edged out Reunion.

Round two is on Wednesday 22 July

Nigeria 5, Mali 0 in Tsevie (CAR Develop. Trophy, North: Playoff 5th-6th)
Benin 29, Togo ‘B’ 0 in Tsevie (CAR Dev. Trophy, North: Playoff 7th-8th)

Reviews
A good win to New Zealand over Australia started the Tri Nations series. I could help but think the atmosphere at Eden Park didn't come near the atmosphere in Pretoria for the Lions' second test against South Africa. Is the Tri Nations dying?

Samoa recorded a very predictable win in Port Moresby which sees them automatically qualify for the 2011 Rugby World Cup. In Africa, Niger won the CAR Development North Trophy for 2009.

Not for some time has the start of the Tri Nations international rugby tournament between South Africa, Australia and New Zealand been so open. Australia is the only one of the three who were undefeated in their pre tournament international rugby tests. The other teams have displayed fluctuation fortunes and form

New Zealand has so far struggled to show the amazing form they displayed during their November 2008 northern tour. Hit by injuries and player drift overseas, the All Blacks have played well below their expected form in the tests against France and Italy. The good news is that key players are back in the team. Captain Richie McCaw, flanker Rodney So'oialo and winger Sitiveni Sivivatu all play their first test matches since that November tour. This will boost the team confidence with McCaws leadership and the other's experience all playing a huge part. But will they be able to defeat the Wallabies?

Australian rugby has been quietly gaining momentium at the top playing level. The team is still relatively inexperienced with some promising youngsters stepping up to international rugby. There is experience in the team as well with Matt Giteau, Nathan Sharp, Sterling Mortlock and Alistair Baxter.

So the scene is set. The Bledisloe Cup, the symbol of rugby competition between New Zealand and Australia since 1932 and held by New Zealand, is also up for grabs. Australia has not won at Eden Park since 1986. And then there's South Africa! More about them next week.

Rugby Test: Samoa in Papua New Guinea

18.07.2009
Samoa v Papua New Guinea in Port Moresby (WCQ Oceania R2 Playoff)

Venue: Lloyd Robson Oval

Preview
Samoa gave the Papua New Guineans a mother of a hiding last weekend in Apia. The 115-7 score line was a disaster for the visitors, who, whilst not expected to win, were expected to give a good showing. Now, the locals will be in damage control mode, hoping to keep the score below the century, and hopefully below fifty. Their only hope is that Samoa could not bring their best team, the trip to PNG from Apia took forever and that the local water will bring half the Samoan team to their knees.

“The game this weekend is a very serious one for us. The Pukpuks have had a chance to review last week’s match and they would have identified areas to plug and counter the gaps we found last week. I expect they will improve as a result. They will be very hard to beat, because they will be playing in front of their home crowd, they will be playing for pride and respect and they believe they have a chance to win as they feel we are weakened by some of our players that are unavailable.”says Manu Samoa Assistant Coach, Fepulea’i Patu from Port Moresby.

And comment from PNG coach Billy Rapilla..“The boys were a little conservative in Apia but we’re now focused on their own game. It was all mental for our boys. We will need a stronger frame of mind come tomorrow,” he said. The scoreline was not indicative of how well the Pukpuks can play “but of how bad we can get when we let our concentration falter”.

Last weekend's game was the first played between these two Oceania nations.

GWC Rugby Rankings: Oceania Table-Samoa 4th, PNG 6th

Prediction: Well, it won't be like last week's bloodbath but I expect the Samoans, even if most are local players, will just have too much power for the locals. The young Samoans will be looking ahead to further opportunities in the Samoan team for 2010, and then the World Cup in 2011, and even for club contracts overseas. For them there is a lot to play for.

Rugby Tournament: CAR Development Trophy, North

18.07.2009
The tournament being held in the tiny republic of Togo, is a rugby festival for emerging African nations in Northern Africa.

Situated 32km north of Lome, the republics capital, this town has hosted the tournament comprising of national rugby teams from the hosts, Togo, Benin, Nigeria, Mali, Burkino Faso and Niger. Chad withdrew and Togo 'B' made up the numbers.

After a week of intense competition finals day takes place this Saturday.

The Final
Niger v Ghana

Preview
Niger's only blemish during the week was a 11-11 draw with Mali. They defeated Benin 10-3 and hosts Togo 6-3 to reach the final.

Ghana easily defeated Togo 'B' 43-0 then had a hard 5-5 draw with Nigeria before defeating Burkino Faso 17-7 to determine the top position in Pool B.

Apart from the second Togo team, the playing standards look very even at this level of international rugby. A lot will depend upon injuries and who is left standing after an intensive week of rugby with daily temperatures between 25 and 30deg.

Previous Encounters
These two teams have never met before.

GWC Rugby Rankings: Africa Table-Ghana 17th, Niger 20th

Prediction: Ghana by 9 points

Other Matches
Playoff for 3rd-4th
Togo v Burkino Faso

There is little between all the teams. Hosts Togo and Burkino Faso could both easily have been in the final. Burkino Faso's loss to Ghana was a big disappointment as the Burkino team won last year's tournament. The hosts will also be very strong.

GWC Rugby Rankings: Africa Table-Burkino Faso 18th, Togo 22nd

Prediction: Burkino Faso by 12 points.

Playoff 5th-6th
Mali v Nigeria

Again not a lot between these teams. Mali drew 11-11 with Niger who is in the final, whilst Nigeria drew 5-5 with Ghana the other finalist!

GWC Rugby Rankings: Africa Table-Nigeria 19th, Mali 21st

Prediction: Nigeria by 6 points

Teams not available

Playoff 5th-6th
Benin v Togo 'B'

Togo 'B' was the fill-in team and Benin should win comfortably.

Prediction: Benin by 30 points.

The USA caused a major upset when, against form, they defeated Canada 12-6 last weekend in Charleston. It was American Independence Day and the USA Eagles celebrated the occasion in style. They will find the Canadians better prepared at home this weekend and will need to play extremely well to gain automatic qualification to the 2011 Rugby World Cup finals.

Test Match: Papua New Guinea Challenges Samoa

11.07.2009
Samoa v Papua New Guinea in Apia (WCQ Oceania R2 Final, 1st leg)

Preview
Papua New Guinea earned the right to challenge Samoa for a place in the 2011 Rugby World Cup finals with a 29-21 win over the Cook Islands in Port Moresby last weekend. PNG has never managed to get past the big three of Pacific Island rugby before and they will face a daunting task.

Samoa, fresh from their Pacific Nations Cup campaign will be too strong for their lesser experienced rivals. The Samoan team is not as strong as that that took part in the Pacific Nations Cup.

These two teams have never met before.

GWC Rugby Rankings: Oceania Table-Samoa 3rd, Papua New Guinea 6th

Prediction: Samoa by 42 points.

Rugby Test: Kenya and Morocco in CAR Trophy Final

11.07.2009
Kenya v Morocco in Safi (CAR Trophy, North; Final)

Preview
The local Moroccan team was hard pushed to over come a team they would normally dispatch with ease. It's difficult to pin point their present woes but missing out on a World Cup finals place crashed last season has not helped confidence. I expect Kenya, who were also surprisingly eliminated last year, to prevail in a very close game.

Senegal v Cameroun in Safi (CAR Trophy, North; Playoff 3rd-4th)

Preview
These two teams will have to settle for the pickings after their mid-week defeats. Senegal has a slight historical advantage over Cameroun although I'd expect the result to be close. A lot will depend on how many injuries and how well the teams have shaped up after those tough matches mid-week.

Test Rugby: Africa Tournament Begins

This tournament is for the rugby nations who were eliminated in the 2008 Rugby World Cup qualifying matches for Africa. So it would come as suprise for some to read the names of the likes of Morocco and Kenya. In the past those teams have figured prominantly in the World Cup qualifying rounds. But in 2008 they were both quickly eliminated.

This tournament has a rather quick conclusion in its makeup, unlike other African tournaments that are about to kick off elsewhere on the continent. Which is rather a shame as those nations involved only get to play two test matches in 2009.

08.07.2009
Kenya v Senegal in Casablanca (CAR Trophy, North; 1st Semi-final)

Senegal has selected a very strong France-based squad, unlike previous teams. A Local Senegalese XV defeated Mali 22-3 in a warm up match on 27 June. These two teams have not met before.

05.07.2009
Papua New Guinea 29, Cook Islands 21 in Port Moresby

Reviews
Finally and at last the British and Irish lions let loose and won comfortably against a South African side that struggled the whole match. The Springbox 'Second Fifteen', as they were labelled, were not allowed to play their usual game and found a fired-up Lions side determined to take something from this tour. There will be questions about the wisedom of the South African selectors decisions to rest players and to the depth of the South African squad that will face Australia and New Zealand in a few weeks time.

The USA gained the best birthday present ever. A win against canada on the 4th of July! Although no tries were scored it was a entertaining close, physical match. The USA now head for Edmonton, Canada next weekend where they will hope to win and place themselves directly into the 2011 Rugby World Cup.

The Philippines won promotion to Asia Nations Division 2 with a convincing 25-0 win against Guam. Iran won 48-13 against Indonesia thus relegating the Indonesians to Division for 2010.

And last but not least Papua New Guinea won the Oceania Zone World Cup qualifier against the Cook Islands. They now head to Apia next weekend for a playoff against Samoa in the first leg of the Oceania R2 final.

Test Match: South Africa-Lions Rubber is Dead

04.07.2009
British and Irish Lions v South Africa in Johannesburg (3rd Test)

Preview
It's a pity. So much was made of this unique British and Irish Lions tour to South Africa. But in the end it's became a fizzer. The Lions came so very close to pulling off the needed win last weekend but eventually went down 25-28 and from that point the series died. There may be a consolation Lions win here but already this side has been relegated to the group of Lions' sides that have failed.

Having said that the selectors have turned the game sideways with a huge number of changes made from the second test. They are not all forced by injuries although in the Lions camp, fresh legs were called for since the energy-sapping second test. Remember all players were selected to be able to play test rugby against South Africa.

For the Lions being without their inspirational back O'Driscoll wil hurt. But elsewhere across the paddock the possibilities are endless and in reality this is almost a one-off test. Pity about the dead rubber.

International Rugby: USA, Canada Showdown No.1

04.07.2009
United States v Canada in Charleston (WCQ America R2, First Leg)

Preview
July 4th is a special celebration day in the USA. Independence Day sees festivity throughout the land. The USA rugby team will be hoping that the occasion will carry their team to victory in the first leg of this 2011 Rugby World Cup qualifying match.

Both teams has had an extensive preparation over the months of May and June. Both played the visiting Irish and Welsh sides before competing in the Churchill Cup. What these results showed is that Canada has a clear advantage over their southern neighbours.

The USA has continued to struggle to build a strong team despite finishing above last in the Churchill Cup for the first time in a few years. New coach Eddie O'Sullivan, of Irish fame, is still building his new side. This is crunch time. The winner on aggregate over two legs will qualify automatically for the 2011 Rugby World Cup. The loser will have to battle its way through a rigorous repecharge system to qualify through the back door. At this stage I can't see Canada losing either leg, although the home advantage for this match should see the USA push the visitors to a close result.

This will be an interesting clash between the world's biggest Muslim nations. Their rugby community is as yet still very small but growing. Iran were undefeated in their short international rugby history until mid-week when they lost 0-15 to hosts Philippines. Indonesia lost 3-23 to Guam also mid-week and I would expect the Iranians to win, sending Indonesia to the 2010 Asia Nations Division 4.

Rugby Test Results: Asia Nations Div.3

01.07.2009
Guam 23, Indonesia 3 in Manilla
Philippines 15, Iran 0 in Manilla

Review
Day 1 of this tournament saw Guam win comfortably over Indonesia and the hosts, the Philippines inflict defeat upon Iran, Iran's first test loss.

This means that on Saturday Guam will play Philippines in the final, with the winner progressing to Division 2, and Indonesia to play Iran with the loser moving down to a new Division 4 in 2010.
