TEST RUGBY: Fierce Test Predicted

12.06.2010
France v South Africa in Capetown

Venue: Newlands Park

Referee:Bryce Lawrence (New Zealand)

Preview
The World Cup soccer tournament is being held at the same time in South Africa as this tour of the Republic by France. So the nations is really focused on soccer but instead of drawn defensive soccer games expect something very different in Capetown.

I recently watched again the South Africa v France rugby test played last November in France. I don't think I have seen a more physical game of rugby for sometime. Not dirty. Just pure physical confrontation as only this magnificent game can bring. France won that brutal game and then promptly folded against New Zealand a few weeks later.I Ah! French rugby!

Last Five Encounters

INTERNATIONAL TEST RUGBY: Ireland Down Under

12.06.2010
Ireland v New Zealand in New Plymouth

Venue: Yarrow Stadium

Referee: Wayne Barnes (England)

Preview
Could this be Ireland's day? For so long the Irish have played the All Blacks and lost. On Saturday they have a grand opportunity to achieve what no other Irish team has done.

The Irish arrive in New Zealand with virtually their strongest possible side whilst New Zealand introduces 6 new players to test rugby, either in the starting lineup or from the bench.

It will be a fascinating test, old v new.

TEST MATCH: Pacific Nations Cup

12.06.2010
Samoa v Tonga in Apia

Venue: Apia Park

Referee: Peter FitzGibbon (Ireland)

Preview
The first of the Pacific Nations cup matches in Apia begins today. Host nation Samoa plays the visiting Tongan side. Both side will be flexing their muscles and preparing for next years Rugby World Cup. As usual both teams are without a number of their top overseas-based players so the opportunity is there for younger players to establish themselves before next years event.

Both sides have been able to call upon some of their overseas-based players including London Wasps' David Lemi and London Irish's George Stowers for Samoa. Traditionally Samoa has had the edge over their Pacific Island neighbours. The one famous exception was Tonga's magnificient win in the 2007 Rugby World Cup after suffering a mauling from Samoa earlier in the year. Expect some big hits!

Last Five Encounters
23.06.2009 Samoa 27-13 in Lautoka (Pacific Nations Cup)

23.06.2007 Samoa 50-3 in Apia (Pacific Nations Cup)
01.07.2006 Samoa 36-0 in Gosford (Pacific 5 Nations)

Tonga last won in Apia in 1980, winning 15-12.

GWC Rugby Rankings
World Table-Samoa 12th, Tonga 14th
Oceania Table-Samoa 4th, Tonga 5th

RUGBY TEST: Pacific Nations Opener

12.06.2010
Fiji v Japan in Lautoka

Venue: Churchill Park

Referee: George Clancy (Ireland)

Preview
Japan started its 2010 campaign in grand style sweeping all Asian challengers before them. John Kirwan has got this side playing well and lasting 80 minutes of rugby, something they have failed to do against stronger opposition. So how will they do against stronger teams?

Fiji has problems. Firstly, they cannot get all their best players in from their European and Japanese clubs. This is usual for this union. Secondly two players are out due to suspensions following their 3-49 loss to Australia last weekend. 'Centre Saula Radidi was handed a two-match ban after being cited for a dangerous tackle on Giteau early in the second half, while full-back Taniela Rawaqa was suspended for one game after being cited for a dangerous tackle/shoulder charge, also on Giteau, this time in the first half'.

The Fijians have made nine changes to the lineup that was outclassed by Australia last weekend, including a new captain in Waqaniburotu.

John Kirwan took his Japanese side to New Zealand to prepare for this game. A Japan XV went down 19-23 to North Harbour at Albany Stadium. Down 0-16 at one stage the Japanese fought back and nearly stole the game in the dying moments. It was a good work out, especially for their defensive structure, a situation not tested by the Asian Teams in this years Asia5Nations competition.

INTERNATIONAL RUGBY RESULTS; IRB Nations Cup Day 1

In Bucharest

11.06.2010
Namibia 21, Romania 17
Italy A 22, Argentina A 20
Georgia 22, Scotland 'A 21

Briefly
Upsets all round in my book. Well, lets say all my predictions were WELL out!

Namibia fought hard to win against Romania, the host nation. Italy A edged out the Jaguars, whilst Georgia, with a below-strength side, defeated last years tournament winner Scotland 'A'

This sets up a most interesting competition from this point.

TEST RUGBY: Pacific Nations Cup Begins

This year the tournament is again being held in one location, Apia Samoa. Today's Fiji v Japan is in Lautoka, Fiji, but then all teams meet in Apia. For the first time Australia and New Zealand is not represented, which is a great shame. Both these Pacific nations have used the tournament to blood up-and-coming players as they sent their 'A' teams or NZ Maoris. The reasons given are the world economic situation and the Rugby World Cup next year. I'm not convinced! These two Pacific super powers should be doing more to help the development of the game in the Pacific. Being a Kiwi living in Australia I'm okay to bag both these nations. What do you think?

INTERNATIONAL RUGBY MATCH: IRB Nations Cup

11.06.2010
Namibia v Romania

Venue: Bucharest

Referee:

Preview
Namibia return to this competition, having last played in 2007. They are without two key players, unavailable, in Kees Lensing and Hugo Horn. There is a smattering of South African or European based players. This is an important tournament for Namibia, a year out from the Rugby World Cup finals. They also have an Africa Cup competition to take part in over the next two months after this event.

I cannot find any team list for Romania. I suspect it will be a similar squad to that which easily accounted for the Ukraine in its last two test matches. I expect the Romanians, even if not at full strength, will be too powerful up front for the Namibians.

RUGBY TEST MATCH: IRB Nations Begins

11.06.2010
Scotland A v Georgia

Venue: Bucharest

Referee:

Preview
Georgia and Scotland A begin this IRB tournament, being held in Bucharest.

Georgia A could not have picked a more difficult opponent to begin this series with. They have not selected, for various reasons, their top side, leaving at least 15 top players back in France, where they are based. Plus they have left out four of their most experienced players in this squad. It looks a daunting prospect for Georgia. On the positive side if Georgia wishes to compete at next years Rugby World Cup they will need a broader base of experienced players and I guess bringing them to this tournament is not such a bad move.

Scotland A won this tournament last, although with a much stronger squad than they have in Romania this year. This is still a good team of young players who will certainly pick out the lack of experience, fitness levels and lack of pace that will make up this Georgian side.

The only time these two teams have met in the past was in November 2008, when a similar Georgian outfit were outclassed 3-69 in Glasgow.

GWC and IRB rankings do not apply

Prediction: Scotland A by 30 points.

The second cross-continental international rugby tournament kicks off in Bucharest Friday. There are two newcomers to this tournament, Namibia and Georgia. This tournament is an important benchmark for tier 2 nations to gauge their strength against A sides from tier 1 nations. It is also an important build up for Namibia and Georgia who have already qualified for the 2011 World Cup finals. Romania will use this tournament to prepare for its matches against Tunisia in its bid to qualify and fill the last place at the finals.

4[1]

Scotland A won the tournament last year with a side handy with full Scottish rugby internationals behind them. This year the Scottish side is on tour and a good number of last years A side made that team. This side is younger and has fewer full internationals in it. Scotland A will find the going much tougher this year.

Previews
I would expect England Saxons and newcomers to the tournament France A to have little difficulty with their opponents. Uruguay and Russia showed themselves to be a level below that of Canada and USA with their first day performances.

Uruguay, despite the return of a few overseas-based players were no match for Canada. Russia's squad is missing a few name players being rested and they were defeated by the USA, who lost to Canada on point aggregate in the World Cup qualifiers last year. Russia has already qualified for the World Cup Finals. Uruguay still has to playoff against Kazakhstan in the repecharge first round.

England Saxons and France A are dripping with up-and-coming stars of the future.

England Saxons v Russia

Prediction: England too much grunt up front and speed out wide, by 30 points

France A v Uruguay

Much the same as the above game. France A has lost a few top class backs called into the French team in South Africa. All these players play at the top level in France which puts them light years ahead of the Uruguyans, who boast only one playing at that level, their 35 year old prop lemoine.

Prediction: Pain for Uruguay against Canada last weekend. Pain again v France A. France A by 25 points.

2010 Pakistan team Div.3
Pakistan Squad. Image thanks to Pakistan RFU

Pakistan has the most international experience of all the teams.Their first experience of international rugby was at the 2004 19th Asia Championship, held in Sri Lanka. Pakistan was in Pool C. Sri Lanka was their first opponent on the world stage; they lost 3-75. They also lost to India 3-56. Since then the game has developed rapidly in Pakistan and a healthy and competitive club competition thrives. Last year they crashed out of Division 2 losing both to China and India.

55[1]

Guam first played test rugby in 2005 in a World Cup qualifying series against India, Kazakhstan and Malaysia. They drew their first test match 8-8 with India but lost with honour to the other more established rivals. Last year they defeated Indonesia 23-3 in Manilla but lost 0-25 to the Philippines who were promoted to Division 2.

137[1]

Indonesia entered the world of international test rugby in 2006. Up until last year they have been involved in regional tournaments involving Cambodia, Laos and Brunei, winning most of their games. Last year they lost heavily to both Guam and Iran in the Division 3 Asia Nations Competition. There being no Division 4 Indonesia stayed put. The pressure will be on to improve against the same teams as last year, and hold their place.

iran-RUGBY-LOGO[1]

Iran is the newest team on the world scene in this group. Their progress has been nothing short of amazing. They defeated Pakistan twice and India once in their first year! They took part in a regional tournament in 2008, defeating both Kygyzstan and Uzbekistan. Last year they entered the Asia Nations competitions for the first time playing in Division 3 in Manilla. They lost their first test match ever, going down 0-15 to eventual winner Philippines. They then defeated Indonesia 48-13 to showcase what Iran has to offer international rugby.

ASIA NATIONS RUGBY: Division 4

Kygyzstan has pulled out of this tournament. Hosts Kazakhstan will field a 'B' side in its place.

The Revised Draw
Wednesday 9th June
Uzbekistan v kazakhstan 'B'
Jordan v Mongolia

118[1] Jordan_Recruiting[1] 65[1] Mongolie[1]

Previews
In the regional tournament, held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan were the winners, defeating Kygyzstan 31-12 in the final. Earlier Kygyzstan defeated Mongolia 38-21 in what was Mongolia's maiden test match. Ironically it was Jordan who no-showed last year and Uzbekistan fielded a 'B' side to play Mongolia on the last day.

Very little is known about the teams for this year. We know that Jordan lost 8-27 to Lebanon last month in what was both nations' first international 15's test rugby match. Uzbekistan would be strong favourites to take out this tournament.

GWC Rugby Rankings
Asia Table-Uzbekistan 21st, Mongolia 23rd, Jordan 25th
IRB Rankings do not apply.

Predictions: Kazakhstan 'B' would be a useful I'd imagine and put up a good show against the Uzbekistan side. Uzbekistan by 10 points v Kazakhstan 'B'
Jordan by 10 v Mongolia
But honestly, anything could happen!

ASIA NATIONS RUGBY: Jordanian Team for Division 4

The team has just been emailed to me as the head coach was about to run and catch the plane to Almaty.

This is the first time Asia Nations has featured a Division 4 competition. The other teams are Uzbekistan, Kygyzstan and Mongolia.

Uzbekistan, Kygyzstan and Mongolia played a regional tournament in Tashkent last year, Uzbekistan being the winner. They defeated Kygyzstan in the final 31-12.

Jordan lost its first international rugby test match on 15 May when it lost 8-27 to Lebanon in Dubai. This test match was a curtain raiser to the Arabian Gulf-Korean Asia5Nations game.

The Division 4 tournament was originally down to be held in the Kygyzstani capital Bishkent, but has been transferred to the Kazakhstani Capital, Almaty, due to civil unrest in Kygyzstan.
