Korea edged out home side Hong Kong after building a big lead at half time. The Koreans looked to be a very strong side and managed to hold off a big Hong Kong comeback in the second half.

Chile were too good in a disappointing display by the Brazilians whilst Trinidad Tobago gathered their second Caribbean Championship title when they defeated Mexico. The Mexicans can be proud of their achievement in making th final after being promoted just last season.

The big clash between Asia’s No.2 and No.3 teams will be full of interest. The new round robin/home-away structure of the elite level of Asian rugby means every game counts.

Brazil travels to Santiago in another important CONSUR A clash. Last year Brazil upset Chile in Brazil but can they do the same away? Chile has not been playing of recent seasons and Brazil’s good showing against Uruguay last weekend could mean a repeat of last year’s result.

Mexico and Trinidad Tobago square off in the NACRA Caribbean final. Two new teams in this year’s final and as Mexico is just newly promoted to this level this final has more interest in it.

As has happened before these two nations square off for the Championship South title and a games against the Championship North winner for the title.

There is never much between these two teams and it always difficult to gauge their strengths when you don’t have both line ups available. Trinidad Tobago will have home advantage.

CONSUR A 2015 competition begins with Paraguay travelling to Montevideo. This round is to find the qualifiers for the 2016 CONSUR Cup, the elite level of South American rugby.

Montenegro will become the latest member of the test rugby family when they host the REC Division 3 competition this weekend. The finals will be played next week mid-week.

The Caribbean Championship and Cup competitions continue. Mexico and Cayman Islands will be virtually playing for the North title, the winner facing the South winner. That will be either Guyana or Trinidad Tobago who also play this weekend. The surprise is the USA South is already out of the competition and will in fact have to face the Cup North winner in a promotion-relegation match later.

Some surprises continue in this competition. USA South were defeated at home by Cayman Islands which puts the Americans in a promotion-relegation match with probably Bahamas.Mexico will now play the Cayman Islands on 11 April to see who takes out the Championship North title. That winner will play the Championship South winner for the Grand Final.

The other surprise is the Bahamas defeated Bermuda at home which means they only have to win against Turks and Caicos Islands to qualify for the promotion-relegation playoff against Bermuda.

Trinidad and Tobago’s win against Barbados ensures a Championship South final against last year’s champion Guyana on the 11 April

TT dedicate Rugby Win to Jason Clark

At the end of the match the Trinidad and Tobago national men's rugby team to a man all went to Jason Moon Clark, their teammate who a year ago was side by side with them, bent over and gave him a hug and then a boisterous salute in song. To their credit the Guyana team who would have had many a battle with him for nearly a decade also went to Clark and acknowledged him.
Every T&T try scored in a  workman like 20-0 upset of Guyana , yesterday at UWI grounds saw them point to Clark .

T&T lead 10-0 at half time. Guyana didn't make it easy but when required to do so T&T defended with an indomitable will.

The game and win dedicated to 27 year old Clark,a physically imposing, marauding, hard hitting and athletic second/ back row forward,one of the best T&T players of his generation, who suffered a C7 severed spinal cord injury in a car accident November last year.

His appearance at the game was a credit to his courage and determination and that of his family. His brother Jamal plays for the TT national men's team. His father, Andy, a former TT rugby stand out.

The presence of Clark seemed to inspire the efforts of his teammates as T&T, beaten 20-0 by Guyana last year in Guyana and 22-20 in 2011 in Port of Spain, turned the tables on their arch rival.

The sight of a smiling Clark belied the stark contrast of his physical realities.
It was an emotionally charged NACRA Caribbean Championship South Zone encounter.

In the end T&T advanced to the championship final with USA South.
A promise kept for the Calypso Warriors. Ahead  the challenge of another promise to a stricken teammate.

T&T national head coach Larry Mendez credited his players for sticking to the game plan and for their composure when a man down due to a yellow card.

" I am happy with the improvement shown. However we have areas  to work on ahead of the USA South final."

USA South defeated  2011 and 2012 NACRA champs Bermuda 22-14 to advance to the final. Bermuda whipped Guyana both times they won the title.

"USA South is a force  this year. They dethroned Bermuda in Bermuda. That's not an easy feat as Guyana can attest." Added  Mendez who  is awaiting official  word as to the date and venue for the final between T&T and USA South.

Preview
Rivalry between these two nations goes back to the early sixties. They first met (Guyana as British Guiana) in 1961 in what was an early Caribbean competition. Trinidad Tobago won that game 17-5 in Kingston, Jamaica.

The rivalry is alive and well. Last year in the final game of the NACRA Caribbean Championship South round 3, Guyana caused a minor upset by knocking local team Trinidad Tobago out of the competition with a 22-20 win. Going back to 2008 and the teams clashed in the World Cup qualifying Caribbean Championship final played in Cayman Islands. Trinidad Tobago won that game 40-24 which meant it qualified to play a home-away series against Brazil, which it lost.

This season Guyana struggled against Barbados away whilst Trinidad Tobago defeated Barbados at home by a comfortable 32-3.

All-in-all I expect a close hard-fought encounter.

Trinidad and Tobago has two distinct advantages over the visiting Guyanian team. Firstly, they have already played a test match, last weekend, defeating Barbados 17-10. Secondly, they are playing at home. Last weekend they thirteen new players who will now know what is required to play test rugby.

We know nothing of the Guyanian team. We do know that they gave the Trinidad Tobago side a good fight before losing by 16 points at the 2008 Caribbean Championship/World Cup qualifying match in the Cayman Islands.

This test match is the first of the South Zone, round 3 round-robin series to find a finalist to play the winner of the North Zone. The eventual winner will be the 2011 NACRA Caribbean champion.

Trinidad and Tobago, the reigning Caribbean XV’s champion, enters this competition with thirteen new caps. Despite that they will be a tough team to defeat.

Barbados has the advantage of playing a recent test match, defeating British Virgin Islands 19-13 in a South Zone, round 2 match.
