Preview
These two teams are very evenly matched at this level of competition. Honours were shared last year but prior to that Brazil had the upper hand.

Paraguay will be shaping towards it’s clash with Argentina on 23 May. They came second in last years CONSUR A tournament and so qualified for this year’s CONSUR Cup along with Uruguay. Argentina won’t be at full strength but even so it will be a formidable task to hold the Pumas. Good wins against Brazil are a must if Paraguay is seen to be competitive.

Brazil as a rugby nation is going from strength to strength. The game is developing rapidly throughout the nation. With the 2016 Olympics in Brazil just around the corner and the reintroduction of rugby (in seven’s format) at the Olympics has brought rugby in Brazil to the attention of the world.

Briefly
Korea edged out home side Hong Kong after building a big lead at half time. The Koreans looked to be a very strong side and managed to hold off a big Hong Kong comeback in the second half.

Chile were too good in a disappointing display by the Brazilians whilst Trinidad Tobago gathered their second Caribbean Championship title when they defeated Mexico. The Mexicans can be proud of their achievement in making th final after being promoted just last season.

The big clash between Asia’s No.2 and No.3 teams will be full of interest. The new round robin/home-away structure of the elite level of Asian rugby means every game counts.

Brazil travels to Santiago in another important CONSUR A clash. Last year Brazil upset Chile in Brazil but can they do the same away? Chile has not been playing of recent seasons and Brazil’s good showing against Uruguay last weekend could mean a repeat of last year’s result.

Mexico and Trinidad Tobago square off in the NACRA Caribbean final. Two new teams in this year’s final and as Mexico is just newly promoted to this level this final has more interest in it.

The Brazil-Uruguay clash has mouth watering prospects. To be fair to Brazil another upset victory in this competition is unlikely against Uruguay. The Uruguayans will be just too fit, skilled and organised. I’d expect Brazil to give them a torrid first half until Uruguay’s condition outlasts their northern neighbours.

In this new format for CONSUR rugby last years victors qualify to play for the new CONSUR Cup. They include Argentina, Chile and Uruguay. This year the name South American Championship has been revived and will determine which two nations will play Argentina for the CONSUR Cup 2015.

Also new is the home-away basis of the Championship. This ensures that each nation receives at least one home game, something the ‘Tournament at one venue’ of the past didn’t offer.

Uruguay travels to Asuncion to play neighbours Paraguay first game up. Paraguay has traditionally struggled against the stronger Uruguayan team and I see no change to that for 2014.

Uruguay has had recent test matches against the USA for the second World Cup finals place for Americas. They lost and now face the difficult repechage rounds to try and qualify. The benefit is that they have played together so far in 2014 whereas Paraguay hasn’t.

The last time these two teams met Uruguay notched up 100 points in Iguazi in 2011. Could the same happen again?

Preview
Brazil has been forwarded as one of the fastest rugby growing nations in the world. They still need to defeat either Uruguay or Chile to really announce their arrival on the world stage. This I still think they will find hard to do today. Chile just has that little more experience. But if Brazil is to crack the Chilean nut then doing it today at home will be their chance.

Last year Brazil pushed Chile to a 22-38 loss in Temuco in Chile. In 2012 Brazil lost 6-19 in Santiago. So this could be Brazil’s day but Chile will remain favourite to win.

Prediction: Chile by 7 points.

This is the game that will decide who is placed second in CONSUR A 2013. As Argentina has already qualified the contest is between Chile and Uruguay.

Uruguay already has many advantages over Chile. Firstly they have been involved in June tournaments in Europe for a number of years. They have a cross-border competition set up with Argentina. They also have the home advantage.

For Chile there is little to indicate they will defeat Uruguay. They played a weaker team against Argentina mid-weak with this match in mind. Their record against Uruguay has nevertheless been impressive over the last two seasons. Uruguay may not have put forward their strongest combinations in this tournament over the last two seasons but Chile won last year and lost by a point the year before.

The final leg of the first round of World Cup qualifying matches begins in South America. CONSUR is the organising body for that region.

Brazil retained its place in CONSUR A after defeating Paraguay, the winner of CONSUR B, last September.

The Brazilians, rather strangely, begin this tournament with a flight to Chile to play the local side. I say strange because all the other games are in Montevideo. This gives a huge home advantage to the one team Brazil is more likely to defeat,

Brazil had a warm up test series a week ago against Mexico at home. Brazil won both tests 50-14 and 76-5.

Chile will be a far more difficult opposition, especially at home. Last year the Brazilians pushed Chile before losing 6-19. Playing their second string side the Brazilians were thumped 110-0 by Argentina. Brazil then put in a desperate effort against Uruguay, finally losing 15-27. Their aim will be to win one game either against Chile or Uruguay.

Prediction: Chile by 10 points

Review
Japan and Hong Kong got the Asia 5 Nations tournament off to a flying start. Japan overwhelmed the Philippines at home whilst Hong Kong won easily also at home. The 18 May clash between Philippines and UAE could well be the decider as to who is relegated to Asia Nations Div.1 2014. It certainly was a ‘test’ for the boys from the Philippines. They never gave up, made over 100 tackles in the match and will be a stronger outfit next outing.

Brazil won the second test against the visiting Mexicans. This is an initiative by both rugby nations to spread the game, gain international experience, especially for the Mexicans, and was a good warm up session for the Brazilians as they prepare for the CONSUR A tournament which begins next weekend.
