WORLD CUP QUALIFIERS: Repechage

The Repechage playoffs are to find the final place at the 2015 Rugby World Cup finals to be played in the United Kingdom. The winner will play in Pool A along with England, Wales, Australia and Fiji. Russia qualified as Europe No.3, Zimbabwe as Africa No.2, Hong Kong as Asia No.2 and Uruguay as America’s No.3. The home draw is dependent on teams having the highest IRB Ranking. The winning teams from this weekend will playoff for the final place.

This is the first meeting between these two teams. Zimbabwe has been playing opposition well below of what Russia has been playing. The Africans playing in the middle of Russia would have been a huge physical and mental struggle. Plus they have had little preparation.

Russia hasn’t exactly set the rugby world on fire with some very ordinary results in the IRB Nations cup but I expect them to be fielding a stronger line up. They will just be too much fro Zimbabwe.

I expect this to be a much closer contest than the Russia-Zimbabwe match.
’Hong Kong is a solid squad. Having watched them for a few years now, they have improved immensely and if there is any A5N team outside of Japan that could beat Uruguay, it's Hong Kong. Unfortunately I think their biggest loss is not a player, but losing head coach Leigh Jones to become Japan's defence coach is something that will go a long way. Hong Kong play a pretty structured/patterned game that relies off of good set piece. They play a solid in to out drift defence with an occasional blitz. They're system is very similar to the Welsh spread/fan where they prefer to put numbers into the line instead of loading the breakdown. They one or two they put in though will be pests, able to slow and turn over ball.

While Uruguay may boast a better forward pack, Hong Kong will certainly threaten out wide, and are not afraid to let their 7s stars play with the ball. The key for Hong Kong is they can't have any lapses, they need to put in the full 80. As we saw against Japan, 3 tries in about 10 minutes at the end of the first half really took the wind out of their sails. I would say Uruguay is a favorite but I wouldn't be surprised if Hong Kong was able to keep it close right until the end. They're one scrappy bunch. Uruguay beat Kazakhstan something like 44-6 four years ago? I believe Hong Kong 2014 to be better than Kazakhstan 2010.’

Briefly
This is a hugely important tournament in the island African republic of Madagascar. The winner qualifies directly to the 2015 Rugby World Cup finals. The second-placed team joins Hong Kong, Uruguay and Russia in the repechage stage.

Namibia is the favourites to take the title. I’d expect Kenya to be a threat as will Madagascar on their home turf and if front of what will be 30,000 crowds. Yes that does read 30,000! Don’t right off Zimbabwe although their preparations would be the least impressive of the four nations.

Hosts Madagascar played in a tournament in Reunion, Namibia played against South African provincial sides as did Kenya.

Kenya ran away with their semi-final against Uganda meaning there will be a new CAR Africa Cup holder at the end of this tournament.

Zimbabwe caused a minor surprise when they outplayed hosts Madagascar 38-18. Although newly promoted, Madagascar were expected to win against a so-called depleted Zimbabwe side.

The ‘Sables’ now meet Kenya in the final on Sunday but all eyes will be on the Madagascar-Uganda match as the loser drops to Division 1B for 2014 and thus eliminated from World Cup qualifying.

This tournament was to be held in Antananarivo’s newest stadium but this tournament will be played at the venue of last years CAR Division 1B tournament. Capacity is about 30,000 which will be expected Saturday if not today.

Preview
The stage is set for the penultimate World Cup qualifying action in Africa. This tournament is not so much about the winner but about the loser. The losing team in Saturday’s playoff will be eliminated from the World Cup 2015. Their place in 2014 will be taken by Namibia who recently won Division 1B. The winner of this competition in 2014 will fill the second Africa place at the 2015 Finals.

As hosts Madagascar must be the favourite to win despite the fact that they were promoted from CAR Division 1C in 2013 following a dramatic 57-54 win over Namibia in extra time. The ‘Makis’ have such a huge crowd support and always play well above their level on home soil.

They will have tough competition from either Kenya or Uganda. Zimbabwe, last years 1A winner and holder of the CAR Africa Cup, will not have their strongest side because of a dispute between some of their top players and management.

These two traditional and long time rivals have already played twice this year. Kenya retained the Elgon Cup when they defeated Uganda 19-13 in Nairobi in the second leg. They lost the first 16-17 so ended with the better aggregate. It was a close competition and I would expect it to be the same for this first semi-final.

Preview
Although Madagascar is new to this level of competition they will have some distinct advantages over Zimbabwe.

Firstly they have the crowd. The game in Madagascar is played with so much passion and support the crowd is worth at least a ten-point start for the home side.

Secondly, the ‘Makis’ play the game at such a frenetic pace and passion that the opposition are often left in bewilderment as they concede another try from the deep.

Thirdly, Zimbabwe are in all sorts of strife over their team. A number of top players were left out of selection following a last-minute complaint and petition against team management. Zimbabwe’s squad numbers only twenty-two with only one back on the bench!

On paper it looks like an easy win for Madagascar.

Hong Kong open Emirates Airlines Cup of Nations Title Defence with 22-7 win over Zimbabwe

Hong Kong began their title defence of the 2^nd Emirates Airline Cup of Nations on a winning note after holding off a robust challenge from Zimbabwe to win the opening encounter 22-7 in Dubai on Saturday.

New fly-half Chris McAdam had his kicking boots on slotting five penalties plus converting the solitary try scored by Stewart Megaw as Hong Kong got off to the perfect start they wanted.

Captain Tom McColl marked his return to test rugby after a 16-month hiatus for pilot training for Cathay Pacific and played for the first time at international level at fullback.

McColl didn't put a foot wrong after the African champions drew first blood early in the game with a try in the corner. But once those initial jitters were out of the way, Hong Kong fielding a new backline, looked composed and took control of the game, especially in the second half to run out comfortable winners.

“We took some time to settle down. We were fielding a number of new boys and in the first half they thought ‘phew this is international rugby’. But once they got used to the intensity, we kicked on in the second half,” said a pleased Hong Kong manager Dai Rees.

Zimbabwe caught Hong Kong off guard in the opening minutes by scoring a try through winger Steven Hunduza who was on hand to complete a bullocking run by flanker Shingai Mpogu. Teenager Linience Tambwera knocked over the conversion but that was all the success he had, missing a further five penalty attempts.

It was the opposite story for McAdam, one of four new faces in the Hong Kong backline. The Kowloon fly-half was on target on six out of seven occasions and his left-foot kept Hong Kong in touch in the first half which ended with Zimbabwe clinging to a fragile 7-6 lead.

Hong Kong took the lead for the first time in the match just after the break through McAdam’s third successful penalty kick and then he stretched the lead to 12-7 with another pinpoint effort.

Winger Salom Yiu Kam-shing, one of only three Sevens players in the squad – with Hong Kong aiming to build its depth as it looks forward to next season's crowded sevens and 15s calendar – looked threatening every time he touched the ball in the first half.

He turned that latent danger into reality when he set off on an angular run, slicing through the Zimbabwe defence before offloading to Megaw metres from the try-line

That try, midway through the second half all but sealed victory for Hong Kong whose defence looked impenetrable with backrowers Pale Tauti, Matt Lamming and Nick Hewson putting in thunderous tackles while the new midfield duo of Megaw and Craig Wilson also stood firm.

“Our defence was magnificent especially when you think that we had a new midfield in Stewart and Craig. Also Matt Lamming had a great game. He is a find, he is born in Hong Kong and he has returned to play for us. Coach Leigh Jones has worked hard on our shape around the contact areas and it paid off,” Rees said.

Zimbabwe, who like Hong Kong are preparing for their 2015 World Cup qualifying campaign, tried to use their big and burly forwards and speedy backs to bust through but the line held. And with Hong Kong's pack dominating the set-pieces, the mistakes began to flow and McAdam was on hand to punish them with his accurate boot.

“It’s fantastic to come back after 16 months and start the tournament with a win,” said skipper McColl. McColl was quick to find his feet after the long lay-off and superbly controlled the defence from his vantage position to give Hong Kong the perfect start to their campaign to defend their crown.

In the other game, Belgium showed they have a lethal strike force as they ran in 14 tries to hammer hosts United Arab Emirates 94-3. Belgian fullback Alan Williams led the try spree scoring four tries and knocked over 12 conversions to take his personal tally to 44 points.

This is the second rugby test match in this quadrangular tournament.

Hong Kong has not played together since May whereas Zimbabwe played in the IRB Tri-Nations in Windhoek last month.

Zimbabwe has not included a number of top players involved in the 7’s squad. ‘The squad consists of three overseas-based players in the UK-based trio of flanker Shingi Mpofu, uncapped prop Nic Winwood and centre Tommy Nelson. The three will fly directly to the UAE from their bases.
The other uncapped players in the forwards pack are Durban-based lock Sanele Sibanda, Old Georgians front row Simba Musarutwa and Johannesburg-based Keith Murray.
In the backline, University of KwaZulu Natal centre Ricky Chirengende leads the list of uncapped players, which also has the OGs trio of Graham Kaulback, Jonathan Miller and Johnno McWade.
The Sables backline has been severely handicapped by the absence of Daniel Hondo, Gardner Nechironga, Tangai Nemadire and Wes Mbanje, who are traveling to Port Elizabeth with Sevens. Regular fullback Danny Robertson has gone to Australia on holiday after failing to recover from an ankle injury.’

‘…the Zimbabwean Sables arrived in Namibia yesterday after their participation had earlier been in doubt. According to reports from Zimbabwe, the players went on strike last week over allowances, while the Zimbabwe Rugby Union has also been struggling with a lack of funds. The International Rugby Board however came to the rescue this week when it announced that it would pay for the travel and accommodation of the Zimbabwean team’

TEST RUGBY CANCELLED: Zimbabwe pulls out

‘The crunch tie between defending champions Zimbabwe and Uganda which was due in Harare this weekend, will no longer take place after the home side indicated they won't be capable to host due to financial constraints caused by their recent participation at the Africa Cup.’

Uganda is also experiencing financial difficulties. The worry is that the Victoria Cup for 2012 may have to be cancelled if teams cannot afford to travel or host.
