Italy gagged in front of their home crowd. France showed their usual grit and determination and eventually ground the Italians out of the game. France also popped up a few moments of brilliance (as they can do) giving rise to some optimism against England next weekend.
For Italy they must be terribly disappointed with their performance.Sergio Parisse was playing his 112th test for Italy, a record. Injuries before and during the game certainly affected their confidence. Next week they face Wales at home again.

So who would be the favourite going into this test match? The time would have been when ‘France’ would have immediately been said. Is this case in Rome today?
Italy are brimming with confidence following their narrow win over Scotland at Murrayfield two weeks ago. This will be a special occasion for Sergio Parisse as he trots out onto the paddock for his 112th and Italian record test match.Such is the confidence that although available veteran prop Castrogiovanni has not been recalled to the team
France have shown grit and determination in their three matches for a win and two losses. The grit and determination has been without that French flare that we have come to expect. The unpredictability of the French has not appeared so far this season. You can expect only grit and determination.
French coach Saint-Andre has made more changes to this side. His selection policies have been influenced by injuries but setting up successful combinations has not resulted.

Just when both these teams looked to be humming along nicely they both stumbled at a hurdle in the previous round of the 6 Nations Championship. England were battered by a better side in Dublin and Scotland played the game to forget in losing to Italy.
England lost against Ireland due to lack of experience and so many penalties, all under pressure. Today they will need to lift their game and get their World Cup plans back on track.
Scotland have three losses from three games. They desperately need to win today otherwise that wooden spoon is getting closer.

The 6 Nations International Championship heads into the fourth round this weekend. Ireland head to Wales in what could decide the competition winner. Ireland needs to win to keep their ‘Grand Slam’ intentions alive.
Scotland travels to Twickenham to face England in the traditional Calcutta match. Both sides lost two weekends ago but Scotland’s performance against Italy was woeful. Expect a big lift from the Scots for this one.
Sunday’s France v Italy clash in Rome has a mouth watering prospect of a possible Italian win. Playing at home lifts the Italians and after defeating Scotland two weeks ago they are on a high. France has lost to Ireland and Wales and are struggling.
The Rugby Europe Championship continues with the Russia-Georgia clash being top of the bill. Georgia hasn’t set the world on fire in their last two encounters whilst Russia has defeated Germany and Romania to lift their performances. These two nations actually fought a war only a few years ago. The Russians can expect a ‘warm’ reception in Tbilisi.
The Spain-Portugal clash looks even but Spain has been playing the better rugby lately but Portugal has got the home advantage.
Romania should have too much strength for a struggling Germany.
Moldova travelled to Amsterdam two weeks ago with a weakened squad and lost. They do not travel well. If they lose to Belgium this weekend their hopes for promotion to the elite level of European rugby will take a dive yet again.
In a friendly encounter in France Senegal faces their African cousins the Ivory Coast. I’d expect all players to be France-based. Both these African nations will contest the African Cup Division 1B in early July.

The game we have all been waiting for. Standing 2nd and 3rd on the world rankings behind New Zealand this could well be the 6 Nations Championship title fight. Both teams
England has a dominant record against Ireland since March 2011. The last two encounters have been very close with England just edging ahead at the end.
Ireland are on a run. In their nine consecutive test wins since March 2014 South Africa and Australia are included in their scalps.
England’s injury worries continue but this line up emphasises the great depth they have. Today’s locks are relatively inexperienced but their success so far in this competition has meant they stay. The main injury concern has been Mike Brown’s concussion. His absence will be noticed. Apart from that no real weaknesses appear in England’s line up.
Ireland has Sean O’Brien back following his first game for nearly two years against France two weeks ago. He will be a major presence in the loose. Sexton is Ireland’s key player. How he dictates play could well be the edge.
And don’t forget the passionate Irish crowd in Dublin. There will be more noise than ever and watch the stadium lift if Ireland gets a win. Can’t wait!

Review
Italy caused the upset of the day with a determined win against a Scotland side display all that is awful about Scottish rugby. This has been described as the worst display so far under new coach Vern Cotter. The Italian forwards set up this victory so much for my comments about an ‘ageing pack’.
Wales did enough, just, against France in Paris. It was a dour struggle. For the fourth year in a row France will languish around the middle to bottom place on the 6 Nations table. Saint Andre’s place as coach will now come into question probably too late for the Rugby World Cup.
All eyes are on the Ireland-England clash Sunday. Can’t wait

Neither team has performed in any way memorable so far in this competition. France has managed one try in two games whilst Wales were bruised in their loss to England and struggled for most of the game against Scotland.
The team that loses would almost certainly be out on any contention of a 6 Nations title. For Wales that would be a major let down after those memorable title wins in 2012 and 2013.
This could well be an opportunity for either side (or perhaps both) to shake off the lethargy and produce a great game of rugby. Let’s hope so.

Preview
It was inevitable that Scotland and Italy will clash to probably decide the holder of the wooden spoon for this tournament. Recent from both sides leaves us little choice.
Scotland have the advantage of the home ground. They have also put together impressive performances both against France and recently Wales. Take into account their good performances in the November internationals and it’s easy to see the impact coach Vernan Cotter has had on this side. Sadly at the moment it is just not enough. Perhaps leading up to the World Cup Scotland will come into form as there is the hint they could surprise.
Italy has also shown a few glimpses of sparkle but that’s all it has been. No longer is their aging forward pack (Parisse apart) a dangerous menace in games. After a few bright performances over the last few seasons 2014-15 so far has been a disaster for the Azzuri. They have recieved a set back with injuries to experienced players Castrogiovanni and Masi, whilst Sarto is also injured.

Briefly
It’s the England-Ireland clash on Sunday that is the talk across the rugby world. These two teams are ranked 1 and 2 in Europe and both are right up there in the world rankings as well. It will be enormous!
Elsewhere Wales and France will slug it out in Paris. Whoever loses will be out of any hopes of a 6 Nations Championship title. Italy and Scotland will again be clashing to sort out who may hold the wooden spoon at the end of the competition.
The Rugby Europe Championship continues with all teams playing on Saturday. Georgia were very sluggish against Portugal at home last weekend and will need to fire up against Spain away. The Spanish showed against Russia that they could be team on the rise. Romania will be too strong for Russia whilst the Germany-Portugal clash in Lisbon will be interesting.
The Netherlands showed last weekend that they are up to the standard required at REC 1B level in their two outings. Moldova are the favourites in this Division but are notoriously poor playing away. This could be another interesting encounter.

Both Scotland and Wales suffered defeats in the first round of the Six Nations played last weekend. The losing team today will almost certainly be out of any contention for a championship title.
Scotland may have been unhappy to lose to France last weekend but the progress this side has made under Vern cotter’s experience is most noticeable. They are actually pleasing to watch. I thought their intensity against the All Blacks in November was quite remarkable.
Wales will out to prove their stumble against England in the second half was a one off showing. This is a very experienced side. Leaving out George North has not really weakened this side. Remember that in 2013 Wales dropped their first game to go on a win that championship.
Look out for fireworks in the first half. It should be a cracker!

Briefly
England were too strong for Italy at Twickenham. Italy were competitive early on and throughout the first half. England dominated the second half and preyed upon mistakes made under pressure by Italy.
Ireland had to battle against a fierce French side intent on preserving their good record in Dublin and to show a big improvement from last weekend. This result paves the way for a mouth-watering class between England and Ireland on 1 March.

England are bustling with confidence after their win against Wales last weekend. Coach Lancaster has named an unchanged starting fifteen with some very good players left out. This is the depth of English rugby at present.
Italy on the other hand have lost experienced flanker Zanni and mid-fielder Michele Campagnaro. Without these two Italy is considerably weaker and although the replacements are good players the lack of depth and the problems behind their pack will place Italy on the back foot from the kickoff.
