Uruguay v Argentina in Montevideo (CONSUR Cup)

The newest version of the South American rugby competition/championship gets underway in Montevideo. Chile and Uruguay qualified to play in the 2014 CONSUR Cup competition due to their first and second placing in last year’s CONSUR A competition. The top two teams from this year’s South American Championship, Uruguay and Paraguay, will compete in the CONSUR Cup (against Argentina of course) in 2015.

If you are thinking this is the top Argentine team well think again. Whilst it might not be the fourth (or was it third?) strongest team as per 2013 and before, it certainly does not include any name players plying their rugby trade in Europe. This team is almost wholly Argentina based.

Uruguay would be the only team, on 2014 form, that will come close to Argentina and they may give their cousins from across the River Plate a fright in the first half but I’d expect the ‘home’ Argies to be too strong at the finish.

Prediction: Argentina by 20 points.

Note: Although only a few of these Argentine players will make it to the June tests and the ‘Rugby Championship’ Argentina will honour them with test caps.
