Qatar won the HSBC Asian 5 Nations Division IV competition on its debut as a participating union this evening in Dubai after edging Lebanon 29 – 14. Qatar was paced by the boot of former Arabian Gulf Rugby Football Union fly half Paul Beard who contributed 19 points through a drop goal, four penalties and two conversions.
Qatar hooker Shane Kelly notched his third try in two matches, while native Qatari winger Al Malik Mubarak scored his first test match try to ensure Qatar’s undefeated record in international rugby after winning its maiden test match last Wednesday.
Lebanon’s points came through a try to No 8 Zaki Rafai and a try and two conversions to talented fly half Karim Jammal, bringing his tournament total to 33 points in two matches. Lebanon closed the gap to 14-23 with moments remaining in the second half after Jammal put in a great solo effort try before Beard closed out the game with a well-taken drop goal followed by a penalty.
