Bledisloe Cup

For the first time in the 74 year history of this famous symbol of rugby supremacy between Australia and New Zealand, the Bledisloe Cup will be fought for on 'foreign' soil. Australia and New Zealand will play each other in Hong Kong on the way to their respective tours of Europe. The match has been organised by the Hong Kong Rugby Union.

Is this going too far? What lies ahead for other venues for this sacred trophy? How many Australians and New Zealanders will actually watch this match live? Post your views here.

Sweden 21, Latvia 5 in Vanesborg (WCQ Eur. R3; ENC 2B)

Rugby Test: Sweden v Latvia

25.10.2008
Sweden v Latvia in Vanesborg (WCQ Europe R 3; ENC 2B)

Preview
Venue: Gymnasieplanen, Vänersborg, Sweden
Kick-off: 14.00 local time
Referee: M.Michalik (Poland)

Neither team has played a competition game yet this season. This game, and the Croatia v Malta match are the first ones in the ENC 2B competition this season.

Sweden gained promotion from ENC 3A at the end of last season. This will be their first game at this new level. Sweden won its way into this level in 2000-01 but soon dropped away with poor form including the 2007 Rugby World Cup qualifiers of 2004-05. Entering ENC 3A in 2005-06 Sweden began to climb again eventually winning its way into the Second Division of Europe.

Latvia came second in this division behind Poland after the 2007-08 season. Latvia's form has been very much up and down over the last few seasons. After being promoted from ENC 3A in 2005-06 they have not been able to proceed losing twice heavily to eventual winners Poland.

Brazil 24, Trinidad and Tobago 12 in Sao Paulo (WCQ America 2, Playoff 2nd Leg)

A big win for the Czech Republic exposing the different standard in play between divisions in Europe. Easy wins for Armenia and Hungary, both on home soil and Trinidad and Tobago put up a good fight in Brazil. Brazil, however, goes into the next WCQ Americas round involving Chile and Uruguay.

Test Rugby: Trinidad and Tobago v Brazil

18.11.2008
Trinidad and Tobago v Brazil in Sao Paulo (WCQ America R2, Playoff 2nd Leg)

Preview
The Calypso Warriors, the name given to the rugby team from Trinidad and Tobago have a huge task ahead of them in Brazil on Saturday. Defeated 31-8 by the Brazilians in the first leg in Port of Spain last Saturday, the Trinidadians have to win by more than 23 points to progress to the next stage. A number of factors are against this happening.

Firstly, winning away in Brazil was always going to be the more difficult leg for the Caribbean team. Secondly, their flight to Brazil was disjointed, with half the team flying direct to Brazil, the other having to fly via Caracus in Venezuela arriving a day later. Passport problems were said to be the cause. Thirdly, the nature and size of Brazil's win will be a major psychological hurdle for the men from Trinidad to overcome.

On the bright side is the return to the Caribean side of 38 year old veteran flyhalf Brendan O'Farrell.

GWC Rugby Rankings: World Table-Brazil 29th, Trinidad and Tobago 30th.
Both these teams qualify for the World Table as they are in different zones in the rugby world. Brazil is affiliated to CONSUR whilst the Caribbean side is with NAWIRA.

Prediction: Rugby is a funny game at any level and upsets can always occur. It is difficult not to see an easy Brazilian win. Brazil by 40 points.

Rugby Test: Czech Republic v Croatia

18.10.2008

Czech Republic v Croatia in Prague (Friendly)

Preview

This rugby test match is an important warm up match for both these sides. The Czech Republic begins its campaign to be promoted back into the ENC 1 after relegation last season. Their first competition game in ENC 2A is against Poland in a months time. So this match is an important work out. This match also gives the Czech Republic an opportunity to end its record 16 consecutive losses since defeating Ukraine 46-8 back in November 2005.

Croatia plays one division below Czech Republic in ENC 2B. They finished middle of the pack in the 2006-08 competition.
The last time these two teams met was also a friendly encounter back in April 2002 in Brno when Croatia were overwhelmed 95-5!

Rugby Fixture: Monaco v Bosnia Herzegovina

11.10.2008
To be played at Stadium St Val d'Annaudin, Menton, near the tiny Principality of Monaco, situated in the sunny south of France. This match is not a 2011 World Cup qualifier.

Review
Monacan rugby has had a chequred history in the European arena. Twice, in 2002 and again in 2006, Monaco was excluded from European rugby competition due to playing inelligible players in their teams. Hopefully this is all behind them. Monaco lost to Cyprus 10-19 in Nicosia last October in the 3D tournament on that island.

Bosnia Herzegovina lost the ENC 3C-3D playoff to Israel recently and will be doing all they can to climb back into ENC 3C. On paper they look to be a class above the other teams at this level.

Rugby Fixture: Austria v Norway

11.10.2008
To be played in Oslo (World Cup Qualifier; ENC 3B)

Preview
Austria travels to Norway for its first rugby test for 2008-09. Austria only just managed to survive in ENC 3B for the next two seasons when they defeated Hungary 9-6 in a suprise result at the end of that season. That result saw Bulgaria relegated instead. So this season will see the need for Austria to rebuild the team and build from that victory over Hungary.

Norway dropped their first home game 15-26 to Hungary 2 weeks ago and the pressure is on them to win this vital home game. Winning away is difficult at this level of international rugby. These two teams drew 3-3 in Vienna in April whilst Norway won the Oslo fixture 22-8 in June of last year.

Rugby Fixture: Brazil v Trinidad and Tobago

11.10.2008
Preview
There is a lot hinging on the first leg of this America World Cup Qualifier. Trinidad and Tobago won the NAWIRA B tournament held in Cayman Islands in April, whilst Brazil defeated Paraguay in Asuncion to take the CONSUR B tournament. They clash to decide who will join Chile and Uruguay in the second round of America qualification test matches. Both countries went through a very similiar qualifying process in 2001-02 with Brazil just edging out the West Indians.

Greece will be playing its first test match in ENC 3C after winning the ENC 3D tournament held in Cyprus last year. These two teams last met in 2006 when both were in ENC 3D, Finland having gained promotion in that year.

Finland lost their first home test match of the season last weekend to Luxembourg 19-27. The pressure is on the Finns to achieve the valuable home win as winning away is very difficult at this level of international rugby.

Review
Ukraine has traditionally been stronger than Poland. Poland is new to this division, earning promotion from ENC 2B. The Poles have been camped in France, have played a few local French club sides and their side contains some France-based players, most of whom are yet to play test rugby. The presence of France club players will make them stronger than the Ukrainians who look to only have home-based players. Poland also has home advantage.

Prediction: Poland by 3 points
