TEST MATCH RUGBY: Cook Cup

13.11.2010
Australia v England at Twickenham

Referee: Craig Joubert (South Africa)

Preview
Australia defeated Leicester 26-15 on Tuesday in a mid week fixture that has seen Australian back up hooker Huia Edmonds been ruled out of this test due to injury. This will be the only change to the Australian scrum following the win over Wales. England will probably be a more formidable scrum than the Welsh. The Australian scrum has been rugby news for some time. It certainly didn't stand up to the English onslaught in June but performed well during the Tri Nations and exceptionally well against the All Blacks in Hong Kong. It will be a well watched feature of this match.

Martin Johnson would have to be happy the way his English team performed against the All Blacks in the second half. They will need to play the full eighty minutes if they hope to defeat the Aussies

INTERNATIONAL RUGBY TEST: South Africans Face Wales

13.11.2010
South Africa v Wales in Cardiff

Venue: Millennium Stadium

Referee: Steve Walsh (Australia)

Preview
South Africa bounced back from being underdog last weekend to win against Ireland. They will need to be even more alert this weekend as Wales looks to be a strong side. The team has a number of players left behind because of injury. Included is captain John Smit. Is this effecting the combinations of this side. Victor Matfiel, it must be said, is doing a good job as captain.

2009 Victor Matfield
Victor Matfield. Stand in captain for South Africa

Wales will be looking for a victory against the Springbox on Saturday. The side looks stronger that that which rather limply lost to Australia last weekend. Hook in midfield means Byrne returns to the fullback position. Look out also for veteran Martyn Williams turning out on the side of the scrum. This Welsh side doesn't need much to click and when they do they will take a big effort to defeat.

RUGBY TEST MATCH: Samoans Face Tough Test in Ireland

13.11.2010
Samoa v Ireland in Dublin

Venue: Aviva Stadium

Referee: Keith Brown (New Zealand)

Preview
Samoa started their Northern tour with a 22-26 loss to Irish province, Connacht. Today the Samoans have made no less than fifteen changes to the run on side. This is a strong unit and the Islanders will be looking to take the Irish by surprise. Although a week or so together is not long enough, the Samoans will certainly be taking the game to the Irish. Expects spills, thrills and big hit. You probably won't get a great deal of combination and the set pieces have never been Samoa's strength. This is a vital tour for Samoa. This is the only time the full Samoan side will play this year.

Ireland slumped to defeat against South Africa and coach Kidney is not afraid to ring the changes. He has included some exciting new faces which may be just what this team needs. The Irish had a rather sad 6 Nations competition in 2010. A win here and a good show against the All Blacks next weekend is what is wanted. Can the Irish bounce back and produce?

Rain, rain and more rain. Such a pity that the clouds have opened up over France. This test match is expected to be played in wet and heavy conditions.

France has named an experimental side to play Fiji. The French team has moved through a number of combinations. The French coach has taken the opportunity to blood some new players mixed in with experienced ones. Injuries have also contributed to the mix. Only No.8 and captain Harinordoquy remains from the French side that defeated England and the Grand Slam back in March. Since then France has had a horror run (as the French can do) which has included a huge loss to Argentina in June.

Fiji has happy memories of Nantes. Remember their win against Wales in 2007 Rugby World Cup Finals? Now the weather will be awful but watch out for these Fijians. They have largely been able to call upon their top players who play in Europe, so this team will be similar to the one that will go to the World Cup next year. They have had little time to train together. They will rely on their natural skills and the inexperience of the French side to hope for a victory. Probably not.

TEST RUGBY MATCH: Argentina in Italy

13.11.2010
Argentina v Italy in Verona

Venue: Stadio Marcantonio Bentegodi

Referee: Chris Pollock (New Zealand)

These two teams have so much in common. Firstly that grand Latin temperament which could mean anything could happen on the rugby paddock and, especially for Argentina, it usually does. Secondly they are placed fairly close together in the ranking tables. They are both striving to match the top sides in international rugby. Thirdly, they play a similar game. Very forward orientated. That is the strength of both teams.

Argentina is the team the world is watching. They have been accepted into the Tri Nations fold in 2012. This is a major step for the South Americans. To play constantly against the best in the world has been their aim for over a decade since they went professional. They defeated a very flat French side in June but did it with such control and devastation. The rugby world really sat up after that. It followed Argentina's third placing at the 2007 Rugby World Cup finals. Their aim is to reach the final in 2012.

Italy has struggled to compete effectively against the major European nations in the 6 Nations International Championship. Their win against Scotland last March was their first in two years in the competition. Their heavy loss to France in March will be noted by the Argentineans. They have relied on a massive and most effective forward pack. It's probably one of the best in the world. Sadly, that's were it ends. To compete Italy must play 80 minutes of robust and expansive rugby. Their style of play is quickly becoming outdated.

WORLD CUP TEST RUGBY: Romania and Uruguay Fight out Last Spot

The final spot at the 2011 Rugby World Cup is up for grabs. Romania and Uruguay, who have both been at Rugby World Cup Finals will start the contest for the last place Saturday. Played over two legs, the first is in Montevideo. The second will be in Bucharest in two weeks time. The team with the best aggregate tally will go to New Zealand.

Uruguay has, like Romania, worn a weary path to this position. The journey began in April-May last year with a playoff against Brazil and Chile. Uruguay passed these easily enough and then faced the USA in a Round Two playoff. The winner would go direct to The World Cup Final. USA won both matches thus pushing Uruguay further away from the finals. The next stage was a one off repechage playoff against the second Asian team Kazakhstan. Uruguay won this easily in Montevideo 44-7. Now they face Romania.

The Romanians have had a worrying time trying to qualify for the Finals. Firstly Georgia and Russia pushed them into 3rd place in the 2008-10 European Nations Cup Competition. This meant a playoff against Ukraine, which Romania won easily followed by a one-off playoff against Tunisia (Africa 2) in Romania, also won easily. So now to Uruguay for the last playoff.

Uruguay has a useful enough team. It includes the return of Matias Arocena to the pivot position plus a small number of Argentina or France-based players. Compared to their opponents they look decidedly under strength.

Romania has called upon a number of experienced campaigners for this test match. They have a strong bench, especially forward, and I suspect they will attempt to out muscle the South Americans. A win away would give the Romanians a great advantage for the return test at home. The 'Oaks' have trained in Buenos Aires for a week prior to moving to Montevideo.

This is the first meeting of these two nations in an international rugby test.

Canada has already played Belgium in a test match last weekend. This will be a sterner test for the Canadians who will field more of their European-based players. This tour is an important part of Canada's build up towards the 2011 Rugby World Cup.

Spain has selected an untried squad, probably reflecting a very ordinary season in 2009-10. What is a little surprising is the number of France-based players who have never played in the Spanish leagues. It has caused a bit of comment here on the FIRA-AER forum http://www.fira-aer-rugby.com/forum2007/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=3612&st=0&sk=t&sd=a

TEST MATCH RUGBY: United States in Lisbon

United States v Portugal in Lisbon

Venue: Lisbon University Stadium

Referee: J.Doyle (England)

Preview
The USA Eagles rugby team began its European tour with a 6-20 loss to London club Saracens. Today they face Portugal in the first international. Next up they play Scotland 'A' and Georgia. This tour is a very important part of their preparations for the 2011 Rugby World Cup. The USA has this tour plus the Churchill Cup next June and then they are at the World Cup. So every game from now on counts.

Portugal missed out on a World Cup place. Their focus is now on the European Nations Cup February-March next year. They will host Namibia and Canada this month. Wins against those World Cup qualifiers will be important to the Portuguese, even if only to prove a point.

Both sides have most of their experienced players, and, like most teams at this level, are made up of players who ply their trade around the rugby world.

History and rankings would suggest that the USA will have too much grunt for Portugal.

Both the Czech Republic and Belgium are going the way of other top European Continental rugby nations, like Georgia and Romania, in that a growing number of their players are now based in French clubs. The November window of international rugby allows these players to play for their nations. Saturdays game will include a considerable number of French-based players.

In recent years these encounters have been close; a draw in Brussels in 2009 and a close win to Belgium in Prague in April of this year.

Both teams have already had a run a round on the paddock. The Czechs defeated Poland 20-15 earlier in October whilst Belgium lost 12-43 to a young Canadian side last weekend. With a full compliment of players this should be a very even contest between two teams who could, at the end of 2012 find themselves competing for a place in the top division of The European Nations Cup.

This will be one of the most interesting of games in the European Nations Cup tournament for the season.

INTERNATIONAL RUGBY

09.11.2010
Samoa v Connacht in Galway

Samoa begins its European tour with a mid week game against provincial Connacht in Galway, more or less in the heart of Ireland. May mid week games by international rugby touring sides continue, expand, develop and once again be a part of international rugby.

INTERNATIONAL RUGBY

09.11.2010
Australia v Leicester Tigers at Wellford Road

This site does concentrate on test rugby but I'm a full on supporter of 'proper' tours where international sides play mid week games. My only criticism is that the mid week games need to go even further out to rural or small town centres. OK. That's it. Moan over. Let the mid week games continue.

INTERNATIONAL RUGBY NEXT WEEKEND: 13 November

13.11.2010
New Zealand v Scotland at Murrayfield
Australia v England at Twickenham
South Africa v Wales in Cardiff
Samoa v Ireland in Dublin
France v Fiji in Nantes
Argentina v Italy in Verona
Romania v Uruguay in Montevideo (WCQ Repechage, Final, 1st leg)
Canada v Spain in Madrid
United States v Portugal in Lisbon
Belgium v Czech Republic in Prague (ENC 1B)
Moldova v Poland in Gdansk (ENC 1B)
Andorra v Armenia in Abovian (ENC 2B)
Bulgaria v Luxembourg in Luxembourg (ENC 2D)

Briefly
November is a HUGE month for international test rugby. The major Southern Hemisphere international rugby teams begin their second rugby test. This weekend also sees the first leg of the 2011 Rugby World Cup repechage qualifying series between Romania and Uruguay.

New Zealand, Australia and South Africa continue their traditional European autumn tours, with tests against old foes Scotland, England and Wales respectively. Scotland is the only Northerner yet to step out onto the paddock. All three European teams will be fired up to take Southern scalps and pull back the 3-0 lead the southerners have over the Northern Hemisphere teams.

This round of November tests take on a special interest as the IRB assist Tier 2 nations in their build up to the 2011 Rugby World Cup Finals.

The Pacific Island teams of Fiji and Samoa will weigh in with efforts against Ireland and France respectively. Very tall orders for the Islanders although they should be near to full strength providing injuries haven't affected their European-based players.

South American teams add a flavour of their own to the Northern Hemisphere-Southern Hemisphere contests. Argentina takes on Italy whilst Uruguay begins their quest for a World Cup 2011 Finals place when they host Romania for the first leg of a two-test tussle.

Two North American rugby teams are also in Europe. Canada and The USA will face Iberian neighbours Spain and Portugal respectively

INTERNATIONAL TEST RUGBY: South Africans Start Tour

07.11.2010
South Africa v Ireland in Dublin

Venue: Aviva Stadium

Referee: Nigel Owens (Wales)

Preview
South Africa arrived in Europe last November having won the Tri Nations, winning over New Zealand and Australia. That reputation was squashed by an amazing Irish side at Croke Park. South Africa went on to play an unforgettable November season with some very ordinary play and results.

The 2010 season has not been a lot better for South Africa. They crushed a lethargic French side in June and then wobbled their way over an equally tired looking Italian side. Things went from bad to worse with a solitary 44-31 win over Australia in Pretoria against losses in the other five Tri Nation tests. It wasn't look good for South Africa 12 months out from the 2011 Rugby World Cup.

Ireland will have fresher legs especially on the international front. A disappointing 6 Nations 2010 campaign saw Ireland fall from the giddy heights of a Grand Slam in 2009. There is an experienced look about this Irish side even without regulars John Hayes and Lions captain Paul O'Connell. There will be a special occasion when, providing he is required, 33 year old Ronan O'Gara will trot out onto the new stadium park off the bench to register his 100th test match for Ireland. As well, this will be the first international rugby test match at the new Aviva Stadium.

aviva-stadium

ronan-ogara
Ronan O'Gara. Set to play his 100th test match.

South Africa arrive in Europe with a worrying injury list. Put that on top of an already out of form side and they look ripe for Irish pickings. Kirchner is playing out of position, Basson is a new cap, as is Stegmann, and Victor Matfield is a new captain. Add to this the fact that coach de Villiers only just survived an inquiry after his teams worst Tri Nations record in history and we have a wobbly Springbox side indeed.

Last Five Encounters
28.11.2009 Ireland 15-10 in Dublin
11.11.2006 Ireland 32-15 in Dublin

19.06.2004 South Africa 26-17 in Capetown
12.06.2004 South Africa 31-17 in Bloemfontein

South Africa won last in Dublin in 2000, 28-18, having lost the last three tests in that city.

Bulgaria 25, Greece 22 in Pernik (ENC 2D)

Briefly
Firstly, my apologies for not covering all the rugby tests this weekend. I managed to get some of the dates muddled! November is one of my busiest months of the year. The huge international calendar clashes with my work commitments.

New Zealand and Australia cemented their places on the top of world rugby with their wins.

Japan trounced Russia in a surprising result. Russia looked way out of their depth and they will need to raise the standards or else face total humiliation at the 2011 Rugby World Cup. Japan on the other are looking. John Kirwan must have got stuck into his Japanese players after their shocker against Samoa last weekend.

Canada got their European tour off with a predicted win against Belgium. Their clash with Georgia in two weeks will be an interesting encounter.

In the European Nations cup results Latvia won again against Malta away and has recovered from the loss to Croatia last weekend. Malta now rest at the bottom of the ladder. Lithuania missed their top players and went down to Sweden who now look favoured for promotion next season. Austria won at home against Norway as did Denmark over Hungary. The Danes look to be the form team at present but their is not a lot between the teams at this level. Finally Bulgaria won at home over Greece.

RUGBY TEST MATCH: Russians Take on Japan

06.11.2010
Russia v Japan in Tokyo

Venue: Prince Chichibu Memorial Rugby Ground

Referee:

Preview
A strong Russian team arrived in Japan mid week to do battle with Japan this Saturday in Tokyo. It has been six years since these two teams last clashed. For both this is a vital test as part of their preparations towards the 2011 Rugby World Cup. Japan ranks higher than the Russians.

Japan had a dreadful match against Samoa last weekend. Head Coach John Kirwan will want a good win from his Japanese team. He has revamped the side from that which lost 10-13 to Samoa including two new caps, at fullback and bench flanker. I can't help thinking that the Japanese front row has an inexperienced look about it and will be Japan's weak spot against a tough Russian pack.

The Russians arrived after playing two international matches against the Argentina Jaguars, both played in Moscow. Russia lost both games 10-20 and 6-32. Russia will be looking for a vast improvement with what looks like a very experienced side.

INTERNATIONAL TEST RUGBY: Canadians Begin European Rugby Tour

06.11.2010
Canada v Belgium in Brussels

Venue: Stade Roi Baudouin

Referee:

2010-belgium-canada-poster

Preview
Canada begin an ambitious tour of Europe this November with a first ever test against Belgium. Although Belgium would be a good level below the standard of the Canadians, the Canadians will be rusty, being a long way off their regular season. Also, the nine European-based will not play against Belgium, making this side well below their normal strength. Those players will be available for the tests against Spain, Georgia and Portugal.

Belgians Thibaut André and Alan Williams, although in the squad, are not available, due to injury, to play v Canada.

These two teams have never met before

GWC Rugby Rankings do not apply

IRB Ranking Points
Canada 69.43, Belgium 55.39

Prediction: Even without their top players, Canada should have too much grunt for the Belgians, and win by 24 points.

Latvia and Malta languish at the bottom of the points table after each has lost a game so far this season. Malta just lost to Lithuania 6-9 last weekend whilst Latvia lost by 2 points to Croatia also last weekend. Another loss for either team will place them closest to relegation even though we have a another round to play next season. It is always difficult to claw your way back from the bottom in this competition.

Latvia has a good record against Malta and won this one away last season.
