EUROPEAN NATIONS CUP: Division 2D

31.05.2014

Finland v Bosnia Herzegovina in Turku (ENC 2D)

Preview

NORWAY 8 4 0 4 141 135 6 2 3 21
BOSNIA H. 7 4 0 3 162 103 59 1 3 20
GREECE 8 3 0 5 132 213 -81 0 1 13
FINLAND 7 2 0 5 99 149 -50 1 2 11

If Bosnia Herzegovina can take any points from this game they will draw ahead of Norway on the points table and take second place. That will give them a promotion playoff against ENC 2C side Austria.

Finland needs the win to move off the bottom of the table and put Greece down to the third division for the 2014-16 ENC tournament. Two bonus points in a loss would also place them ahead of Greece as Finland has a better points aggregate against the Greeks.

It’s all very mathematical but for both teams a lot hinges on this game. Finland lost by 5 points to Bosnia Herzegovina away in the first round. With so much to gain and the home advantage Finland could well upset the visitors.

The Bosnians demolished Norway in their latest outing at home so could well be too strong for the Finns.

Prediction: Bosnia Herzegovina by 2 points.

ASIA NATIONS DIVISION 3, EAST Finals Day

31.05.2014
Guam v China in Vientiane (Asia Nations Div.3, East; Final)
Laos v Indonesia in Vientiane (Asia Nations Div.3, East; Playoff 3rd-4th)

Preview
China caused a minor upset by defeating Indonesia in the first semi-final held Thursday. For the last few seasons China appears to have concentrated on the Sevens rugby allowing their 15’s game to slip dramatically. Thursday’s game is an indication that that could change.

China’s clash with Guam will see Asia’s most populated nation take on one of its least. Guam showed just how strong they are with a convincing 48-0 win over hosts Laos. I’d expect Guam to be too strong for the Chinese side.

The last time Guam and China met was in 2011 with China winning 28-18 on the day. Last year Guam defeated Indonesia by over 50 points. Indonesia lost by 4 points to China Thursday.

This year Laos has had to step up in the standard of competition from other years and may well find Indonesia too strong.

Predictions
Guam by 24 v China
Indonesia by 12 points

JAPAN 33, SAMOA 14

30.05.2014

Samoa travelled to Japan with basically all local players. Many of Samoa’s professionals from Super Europe and from Europe will travel to Auckland later to link up with their national side in time for the Pacific Nations Cup.

The Samoans were not expected to trouble Japan too much although they certainly started strongly. On this display only a handful will eventually make the full Samoan side.

Not a lot can be judged from this Japanese performance. They will be facing sterner opposition during their June test series,

ASIA NATIONS DIVISION 3 EAST

29.05.2014
Guam v Laos in Vientiane (Asia Nations Div.3, East; Semi-final 1)
Indonesia v China in Vientiane (Asia Nations Div.3, East; Semi-final 2)

Briefly
Asia Nations Division 3 has changed from last season. It has been divided into east and west zones.

China failed to win any of its Division 3 games last season. They lost 13-37 to Indonesia. China is focusing on sevens rugby. In 2010 they were relegated from Division 2 and since has not looked like gaining promotion. Since 2012 they have lost by some huge margins.

Indonesia has also struggled at the international level. They have managed to survive in Division 3 since being promoted out of regional tournaments in 2009.

Guam is the form team. They lost narrowly to Qatar last season and defeated Indonesia by over 50 points. I expect them to win this zone.

Laos played in Division 4 last year and even though they are hosts I can’t see them making an impact.

Predictions
Indonesia by 30 v China
Guam by 25 v Laos

ASIA FIVE NATIONS: World Cup Qualifying, Asia

25.04.2014
Japan v Hong Kong in Tokyo (Asia Five Nations)

Preview
This game decides who takes the Asia 1 qualifying place at the 2015 Rugby World Cup. The loser heads to the repechage round and still has a chance to qualify.

Japan remains undefeated this season in this competition and in fact has never lost a game at this level of Asian rugby and never without a bonus point win. Can Hong Kong burst the Japanese bubble?

In short, no. They could come close, they may event prevent a bonus try win to Japan but this is a hurdle to high for Hong Kong at present. Japan has a vastly superior international programme against tier 2 and tier 1 nations. Hong Kong hosted Belgium last November and before that played in the Emirates Cup where again they played Belgium, hardly a force in world rugby. Japan are in reality light years ahead of their Asian neighbours.

Prediction: Japan by 60 points

TEST RUGBY THIS SATURDAY

24.05.2014
Korea v Philippines in Makati (Asia Five Nations)
Chile v Argentina in Santiago (CONSUR Cup)
Germany v Russia in Hamburg (WCQ Europe R5 Playoff)
Trinidad & Tobago v Barbados in Port of Spain (Caribb. Champ., South League)
Swaziland v Lesotho in Maruso (Friendly)

Briefly
There will be an interesting battle between Korea and Philippines. Whilst the Philippines defeated Sri Lanka away by one point last weekend, and as a result they would have grounds for some optimism, it would be a brave soul to not predict a Korean win.

At steak is a place in the 2015 Asian Elite rugby competition which will feature and home-away series involving Asia three top teams. At the moment Japan is No.1 followed by Hong Kong. Korea is favoured to be the third nation. The game be a close encounter in stages but I just can’t see the Philippines overpowering the Koreans.

Prediction: Korea by 20 points.

Argentina should not experiences any scary moments in their game against Chile. The Chileans have not performed well in 2014 and although playing away from home the Jaguars (well in effect Argentina ‘A’) should have no problems.

Prediction: Argentina by 35 points

The Germany-Russia clash is covered elsewhere on this blog.

Barbados lost 19-48 to Guyana at home last weekend and now have to travel to Trindad for a showdown with the local side. Last year they lost this game at home 6-19 so it will be an uphill struggle for the Barbadians.

Prediction: Trinidad and Tobago by 26 points.

Will it be played? After a number of postponnements, the match awaited Lesotho-Swaziland return game should be played today in Maruso. I’d expect the home side to win a good struggle.

Prediction: Swaziland by 10 points.

Preview
Both teams have had very different paths towards this stage of the European section towards qualifying for the 2015 Rugby World Cup. The winner heads directly to the repechage stage and for the loser the World Cup campaign is over.

Russia is where it is due to a third placing behind Georgia and Romania in the European Nations Cup 2012-14 competition, which doubled as a World Cup Qualifying event. None of its performances were inspiring this season and they looked well off the pace set by both Georgia and Romania. This will be a levelling factor in its chances against Germany.

Germany on the other hand have continued to improve over the last two seasons. They have played at the level below that of Russia in ENC 1B. Germany won that competition and the right to be automatically promoted to ENC 1A, and joining Russia, for the 2014-16 competition. So bright days ahead for German rugby. It is to be hoped that their experience will not be that of Belgium who were promoted to ENC 1A after the 2010-12 competition but did not survive, being relegated to 1B for 2014-16.

Controversy is never far away when covering Rugby World Cup qualifying games. The big problem that lower IRB ranked teams have is availability of key players who ply their trade with big European club sides.Justin Melck, easily Germany’s best player, has not been released by the English side Saracens. For a team such as Germany, this is a huge blow.

An interesting change in the way crucial qualifying matches are staged sees the higher ranked side playing in the lower ranked team’s backyard. Russia travels to Hamburg for this one-off qualifier. If they win Russia will proceed to the first repechage round with a game against Uruguay.

GWC Rugby Rankings
Europe Table: Russia 9th, Germany 15th

Prediction: Russia by 10 points

Barbados and Guyana clash in the first match of the Championship League South ZoneThe Caribbean senior men’s 15’s rugby competition has taken a step forward this year. Organised into two divisions for both the north zone and the south zone there appears to be a pathway of progress that teams can make.

The top tier of competition is called Championship leagues whilst the second tier is called Cup leagues. The winning teams of each League will play for the Caribbean title. The winning team of each Cup section will play the respective 3rd placed team in the leagues for promotion.

CONSUR CUP

17.05.2014
Uruguay v Argentina in Montevideo (CONSUR Cup)

Preview
The newest version of the South American rugby competition/championship gets underway in Montevideo. Chile and Uruguay qualified to play in the 2014 CONSUR Cup competition due to their first and second placing in last year’s CONSUR A competition. The top two teams from this year’s South American Championship, Uruguay and Paraguay, will compete in the CONSUR Cup (against Argentina of course) in 2015.

If you are thinking this is the top Argentine team well think again. Whilst it might not be the fourth (or was it third?) strongest team as per 2013 and before, it certainly does not include any name players plying their rugby trade in Europe. This team is almost wholly Argentina based.

Uruguay would be the only team, on 2014 form, that will come close to Argentina and they may give their cousins from across the River Plate a fright in the first half but I’d expect the ‘home’ Argies to be too strong at the finish.

Prediction: Argentina by 20 points.

Note: Although only a few of these Argentine players will make it to the June tests and the ‘Rugby Championship’ Argentina will honour them with test caps.
